An adorable baby elephant fell into a dry well in Ramakuppam in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district today. Despite several attempts, it was unable to climb out of the pit on its own. Crowds gathered around the pit to watch the helpless animal struggle.
Elephants in India are at great risk, with numbers of Asian elephants decreasing rapidly. It is feared that these elephants may face extinction by 2050. According to the World Wildlife Fund, there are as few as 20-25,000 Asian elephants left in the world, with loss of habitat and poaching for ivory cited as major reasons for this.
