A baby boy died in a hospital in Andhra Pradesh after he was bitten by rats in the intensive care unit of a state-run hospital.

Three officials have been suspended following the incident. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a high level probe seeking a report within 48 hours. He has also warned officials saying an incident like this should not be repeated.

Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Dr K Srinivas had sought a report from the hospital in this regard.

While the officials say that the newborn died early this morning because of complications from a surgery for a urinary infection, the parents say that when the baby was placed in emergency care on a ventilator, his fingers were bitten by rats.

Two days ago, the parents then complained to the hospital authorities. Thereafter, the hospital said they had rat traps placed in the intensive care unit, reports NDTV.

However, the 10-day-old was allegedly bitten again a day later by rats.

The boy was born to a woman named Laxmi on August 17 at the Vijayawada General Hospital. He was shifted to the Guntur General Hospital for a surgery after developing some health complications, and afterwards placed in the ICU, reports IBNLive.

Social Welfare Minister Ravela Kishore Babu has pulled up the superintendent of the hospital over the incident and ordered action against those responsible for it.
