It's a special day for all the brothers and sisters in the country. And that includes, our politicians.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter today to greet the nation on the occasion.

The Prime Minister will celebrate the festival with several rescued manual scavengers tying him rakhi and presenting ones made by widows from Vrindavan and Varanasi.

Ageing widows of Vrindavan and Varanasi have designed around 1,000 special rakhis for PM Modi and will send it to him on the occasion of raksha bandhan on August 29.

The rakhis display pictures of Modi.

"We have planned a target of sending around 1,000 rakhis to our prime minister," 90-year-old Manu 'Maa' had told PTI last week. She said she got a chance to visit PM's house to tie rakhi along with four other widows from Virandavan and Varanasi last year.

That's not all. Women from all walks of life and school children tied ‘rakhi’ on the wrist of PM Modi to mark the occasion.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj celebrated the day by tying rakhi to Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu in the national capital.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has left for Haridwar to celebrate the day with his sister.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumat tied rakhi on a tree to urge people to protect Bihar's green cover.

"People should come forward to plant more trees and protect them for a healthy environment," Nitish Kumar said after tying a 'rakhi' on a tree at Rajdhani Vatika in Patna.

Clad in his trademark white cotton kurta-pyjama, the chief minister said: "I request people with folded hands to tie 'rakhis' to trees to protect the environment. It will be a new beginning to save the earth and human beings."
