American filmmaker Randy Kent was supposed to direct his first Kannada film, Road King, when things hit a bit of a snag: he couldn't get to India to shoot it due to visa issues.

According to a report in The Hindu, Mateen Hussain — who has acted in the movie and a friend of Kent's — hit upon the perfect solution: Skype. According to members of the crew, this worked out to be the perfect decision as it helped save money on this already low-budget production.

“The crew was in jitters, but Mateen was confident. Producers too agreed to this unique experiment and the project took off,” associate director Rajesh told The Hindu.

And so it began. Script readings, casting, and location recces were all carried out on Skype with Kent, whose previous directorial credits include Life Of Lemon (2009).

This is possibly the first instance of an Indian film being directed over Skype. In Hollywood, one instance of this having been done was in last year's sci-fi drama Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.
