Members of the Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena took their protest against the ban on the sale of meat by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation during the Jain period of fasting on September 10, 13, 17 and 18, to the streets by setting up stalls to sell chicken meat in Mumbai's Dadar area.
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has banned the sale of meat during 'Paryushan'. Workers of Raj Thackeray's MNS and his cousin, Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena were also detained as they defied the four-day ban starting today.
MNS workers were seen raising slogans and holding up live chicken at their stall as Shiv Sena workers tore off civic body notices declaring the ban on meat, according to PTI. A similar ban has also been imposed by the neighbouring Mira-Bhayander and Navi Mumbai municipal corporations.
The MNS has said it will sell mutton at Agar Bazar in Mumbai's Dadar too.
The banning of meat in Mumbai have turned into a political slugfest with various political parties slamming the Maharashtra Government for imposing such ban. While the BJP defended the ban, its ally Shiv Sena as well as opposition MNS and Congress and the NCP have vehemently opposed it, alleging the move as a BJP ploy to polarise voters and appease a section of society before the crucial MCGM polls in early 2017.
Uddhav Thackeray said his party would ensure that there was no ban on sale of meat.
"We are selling meat in Dadar area along with Shiv Sena workers, when police suddenly came there and started pushing and shoving us, later they detained us. But we will continue our agitation against the ban till the Government and the civic body revoke the order," MNS corporator Sandip Deshpande said.
Despande said the party would set up meat stalls across the city on all the days of the ban.
BJP has refuted the charge that this was a decision to appease the affluent Jain community.
The Bombay Mutton Dealer’s Association has challenging the BMC's decision. The Bombay High Court on Thursday asked the state government and BMC to file a response if there has always been a ban on sale of mutton previously on these days.
"The concept of sale seems to be the issue here, what happens if it is available from other sources will that be banned,” The Indian Express quoted Justices Anoop Mohta and AA Sayed as saying.
"An eight-day straight ban can't be a formula. Mumbai is a modern city," the court said.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court has banned the sale of the beef in the state after hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against cow slaughter, Hindustan Times reported.
A division bench of the high court comprising Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Janak Raj Kotwal directed the director general of police (DGP) to ensure strict compliance of the order on beef by issuing appropriate directions to all the senior superintendents (SSPs) and station house officers (SHOs) in the state, according to IANS.
Meat shops remained open in Mumbai today, NDTV reported, adding that the city's main government-run abattoir is closed.
