CHANDIGARH—A 24-year-old man was arrested today for allegedly posing as an official from the Prime Minister's Office and calling up a government office in Chandigarh to seek a personal favour.

Earlier this week, Raj Kesarwani, a resident of the city, called up the office of the Adviser to the Chandigarh Administration and said he wanted to talk to the official Vijay Dev, a government statement said.

When Dev's assistant Surjit Singh, an assistant to the bureaucrat, told him that he was not in office, the caller asked him for a personal favour.

Singh grew suspicious after the caller rang again later to ensure the work is done and complained to the police.

Acting on the complaint, a case was registered and after an investigation, Kesarwani, a resident of Rai Pur Khur village in Chandigarh, was arrested.

During interrogation the accused confessed to the crime and disclosed that he had called many other officials in the past in Chandigarh and Panchkula seeking personal favours.
