The Goa-based Sanatan Sanstha, whose members have been accused of killing Communist leader Govind Pansare in February, has a lot of personal grooming advice for its followers.
Apart from hairstyle and the right hair oil, the Sanstha has spiritual advice on bathing, urinating, defecating, fashion and washing clothes.
An article on its website says the Hindu way of urinating and defecating is the healthiest way. It cites a French scientist as having come to the conclusion, though the scientist is not named. The article appears in a section titled Daily Ablutions.
The standing posture for urinating is a bad one, it says, because it “causes a flow of accumulated Raja-Tama predominant energy towards the feet. As the negative energy gets concentrated there, the distressing vibrations emitting from Patal (Hell region) can very quickly enter the body through the feet.” It also “activates the flow of black energy associated with the ground, charging the entire body of the individual with Raja-Tama components.” This is from the Sanstha’s Holy Text 'Daily Conduct and the science underlying its Acts'.
Toilet paper is not sattvik
It goes on to explain why washing with water is better than toilet paper after defecation. “Toilet paper is not sattvik. Besides, it is associated with the Pruthvitattva. Hence, if used after defecation, it is incapable of destroying the Raja-Tama particles in the faeces associated with the Pruthvitattva.”
Hindu clothes only
The Sanatan Sanstha seeks to apply spiritual reasoning to mundane life activities. The reason why we need to wear clothes, according to them, is not only to protect us from the weather. “Wearing clothes amounts to taking the support of Maya to attain a level of Brahman-realized state,” says another article on their website.
We must only wear clothes that are prescribed by the Hindu Dharma. The Sanstha says, “Clothes worn by men and women as prescribed in Hindu Dharma are designed by Deities and are those that manifest the Shiva and Shakti Principles. The clothes of women, meaning the sari (A traditional attire of Bharatiya women), awaken the Shakti Principle and the clothes of men activate the Shiva Principle… It also conserves our spiritual energy.” This particular advice comes from “An Unknown Energy (Through the medium of Ms. Ranjana Gawas).”
They say that wearing kurta-pyjama “generates an elliptical (similar to the flame of a lamp) protective sheath around the body” but it is “more sattvik” to wear “Sovale (A clean, washed, silk or cotton dhoti to be worn during puja [Ritualistic worship]).” The protective shield that a sovale generates around the body is spherical.
There is a whole chart on the ability of different types of dress to “imbibe and emit sattvikta”. The maximum capacity to do so is in nine-yard sari or dhoti. Dupatta can also imbibe and emit sattvikta, but more it when worn on both shoulders rather than just one shoulder. This piece of knowledge comes from “God (Through the medium of Ms. Madhura Bhosale.”
The spiritual reasons for washing clothes
There is spiritual logic to washing clothes. The Sanstha has a full article on wearing washed and unwashed clothes. It says, “In case of washed used clothes there is sweating due to the Tej waves arising from the cloth. An unwashed used garment will give an experience of heat in the body due to gross appearing sagun. A higher proportion of dirt in unwashed clothes causes greater hindrance to the flow of sattvikwaves that are attracted towards it and as a result, the extent of black covering on it is higher.”
Silk is better than cotton, but the best is “valkal (Clothes made from the bark of a tree)”. The advice comes from “A Scholar” through “the medium of Mrs Anjali Gadgil”. It reads, “Looking at the capacity of the valkals to thwart negative energies and to emit Chaitanya, it only shows how complete the action of wearing of valkals (by the Sages and Sages) was from a spiritual perspective. This also shows the competence of Saints and Sages as well as the supremacy of the Hindu Dharma.”
Marriage with religious rituals makes your face glow
The Sanatan Sanstha says that a registered marriage is “meaningless from a spiritual perspective”. A marriage with religious ceremonies can make you look better. An article on this shows before and after marriage pictures of one Mrs Ranjana Gadekar, whose face clearly looks more radiant a week after marriage with religious rituals.
The article explains, “Religious rituals performed while performing a marriage as per the scriptures and recitation of mantras enhance the sattvikta of the body of the bride and the groom. Distressing Raja-Tama vibrations in their bodies decrease, making their bodies radiant.”
Cross-legged bathing
The Sanatan Sanstha says that for spiritual reasons, one should not bathe in the nude. Keep your undergarments on while bathing. Also, sit in a cross-legged posture while bathing. Bathe from head to toe, chant sholkas, use a brass tumbler to pour water over your head. Clean all the nine orifices of the body.
“When sitting in a cross-legged posture, the body shape becomes triangular, thus it becoming possible for a protective sheath to be easily generated during a bath,” it says.
