A special court in Mumbai will announce the quantum of punishment for 12 people convicted of triggering serial train blasts in Mumbai that claimed at least 188 lives in 2006. Over 800 others were injured after bombs planted in several local trains went off on 11 July.
Special Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) judge Yatin D Shinde will pronounce the sentence two weeks after he found 12 of the 13 accused guilty. Special public prosecutor Raja Thakare has sought a death sentence for eight of the convicts, and life imprisonment for the four others.
Meanwhile one of the convicts who planted the bombs, Ehtesham Siddiqui, has written to Union home minister Rajnath Singh asking for the case to be handed over to the National Investigation Agency for reinvestigation.
