Last week's deadly alcohol poisoning case in Mumbai that has killed over 100 people is the latest among a series of such deaths that occur in India on a regular basis. Almost a score of such incidents have taken place across the country in the last decade, killing over 1,000 people. Here's a quick look at some of the worst reported cases of hooch poisoning in the country in recent years.
Toxic alcohol bought from an illegal distillery killed 156 people in West Bengal. While the criminal investigation spurred by the deaths resulted in the closing down of 10 illicit liquor shops, reports suggested involvement of both police and politicians in the sale of bootleg liquor.
Over 136 people lost their lives due to toxic moonshine in Gujarat, leading the state assembly to introduce a bill calling for the death penalty to those convicted in illicit liquor trade.
In 2008, about 180 people died in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu after buying liquor from illegal shops in plastic pouches.
More than 200 people died of drinking hooch in Cuttack in Odisha while another 600 people were hospitalised, making it the biggest such incident in India in decades.
The worst of all incidents took place in Bengaluru in Karnataka when 308 people died due to methyl alcohol poisoning. This was due to adulteration of cheap alcohol.
