For die-hard fans, superstar Rajinikanth's birthday is always an occasion of huge celebrations. Every year, prayers are offered, cakes are cut, and parties and prayers are held on December 12 in honour of thalaivar, currently 64, turning another year older.
This year, however, will be an exception. According to reports, the superstar has called off his birthday celebrations on account of the devastation floods in Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu. Instead, he wants his fans to "join hands" and use their resources to help things return to normalcy.
The Quint quoted an unnamed source as saying the following:
Tamil Nadu has received its heaviest rainfall in more than a 100 years, leading to floods that have caused the death of more than 450 people. The capital city of Chennai was submerged over much of the previous week. The overall economic impact of the calamity has been estimated at Rs 15,000 crore.
Earlier, it had been reported by The Quint that the makers of Enthiran 2 and Kabali — two of his upcoming films — were planning to release promotional material on his upcoming 65th birthday. Two new posters of Kabali featuring Rajnikanth in two different avatars were reportedly slated to be unveiled on the big day, as was some "crucial information" about Enthiran 2.

"Rajinikanth has personally requested the members of his fan clubs to call off his birthday celebrations. He wants all his fans to join hands and help the rain savaged people in relief work instead. The star feels helping the city of Chennai and its people return to the state of normalcy is more important than investing time and energy to celebrate his birthday. He has also promised to support them in this endeavour."
