A bus rammed into two other buses in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh yesterday, leading to much shock and awe. In a country with high road accident rates, that may seem like a very minor incident and definitely not reason enough to be shocked. But guess who was at the wheels? A monkey.

According to a report in The Times of India, a monkey sneaked into a parked Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus and switched the ignition on. Not only that, the primate actually managed to drive the bus, hitting two other buses parked nearby.

The incident occurred when one of the drivers of the bus left the vehicle leaving the keys in the ingnition. He had reportedly gone out to look for prospective passengers. His helper was taking a nap inside the bus, as there was a good one hour left before they were supposed to leave.

That's when the monkey decided to have some fun.

When the bus started moving, the napping driver woke and tried to chase the monkey away. However, he only ended up scaring the animal, who then shifted to the second gear, making the vehicle go faster, reported TOI.

Seeing a driver-less vehicle hurtling towards them, people also started running helter-skelter.

UPSRTC regional manager SK Sharma told TOI, "Monkeys have become a regular menace at bus stations and workshops, where they often fiddle with vehicles undergoing repair. They have also damaged CCTV cameras at stations. Three years ago we had taken the help of municipal authorities to get rid of them but they have returned."
