Meherjan Begum, 50, who was suffering from a cardiac arrest had to wait in the ambulance for 20 minutes on an expressway to Kolkata on Wednesday morning because the policemen there would not allow them to pass. The reason: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee's convoy was about to pass.

Banerjee was scheduled to return from Digha in East Midnapore but police was not sure if she would fly back or come by road -- a situation that caused considerable confusion and trouble for the vehicles on the expressway, reported ANI.

Meherjan, a resident of Jagachha's Unsani area was on her way to the SSKM Hospital, when the road blockage stopped the ambulance.

"They brushed aside my pleas and told me that the ambulance could go only after the CM's convoy had passed. I kept pleading and told them my relative had suffered a heart attack and was in a very critical condition. Some constables checked her pulse and told me that she was stable and could safely wait," her relative Md Aziz told The Times of India.

Finally, the senior officers, after learning about her plight, let the ambulance pass.

Banerjee, for whom the preparations were being made and the traffic diverted, eventually ended up taking a helicopter.

A doctor at the SSKM Hospital told TOI that Meherjan's condition is stable.
