Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut said on Friday that she had been hit by a man when she was 17 years old. The man, who she claimed was old enough to be her father's age, had apparently been stalking her and was "a powerful person for a struggler" in the Bollywood industry like herself at the time.

She was speaking at the launch of journalist Barkha Dutt's book "This Unquiet Land".

However, Ranaut's story doesn't end at being abused and victimised — she went on to tell the audience that she retaliated, and that the incident taught her that she was "actually a born fighter".

"When this man who must be old enough to be my father's age hit me so hard that I fell on my head on the floor and it started to bleed... I picked up my sandal and hit his head hard and it started to bleed as well," she told the audience on Mumbai."But then obviously his physical strength took over mine and I struggled. And I struggled so hard that I couldn't believe my own strength — that I would die or I kill you."

Ranaut said that she later went to the police and registered an FIR against the man, but he was let off with a warning. He allegedly also has a previous criminal record.

"But that day I really saw myself as who I always thought I was but I never really tested myself under such extreme situations," she said. "That sort of clarified my own understanding of myself so I thought I was actually a born fighter."
