How does one get the membership and why were these people chosen over others?
According to Academy guidelines, one must've "achieved distinction in the motion picture arts and sciences," to qualify as a member. Membership is, of course, by invitation only.
As of last year, 31% of the members of the Academy were women and 16 percent were people of color. The number is expected to go up this year as more invites have been rolled out.
