When it comes to beer, Delhi is the place to be. Prices in the city are among the lowest in the world, according to the Beer Price Index 2015.
The index uses beer prices around the world to gauge how expensive a city will be for travellers. Research for the index combines data from 75 cities, and includes five most commonly imported beers and the main local brand.
Only four cities — Krakaw, Kiev, Bratislava and Malaga — have beer that's priced cheaper than in Delhi. But that hasn't spurred much drinking. Delhi is ranked near-bottom in the world when it comes to consumption, with people having just 6 litres of beer per capita in a year, and spending $29. In comparison, people in Bucharest guzzle 133 litres on average and Helsinki residents fork out $1,541 per capita in a year.
Prices in 2015 have changed from last year due to currency appreciations and devaluation. That has made Zurich and Geneva more expensive for beer than Oslo, which ranked as the most expensive last year. Beer in the United States has become costlier after the dollar appreciated against the euro. However, this index does not use purchasing power parity, which would have accounted for price differences between nations.
Cairo ranks the lowest in consumption, with people drinking just 4 litres of beer in a year on average, and spending $25 in the same period.
