In a suspected honour killing, a 22-year-old Dalit man was hacked to death by three men in Udumalaipettai town in Tamil Nadu’s Tirupur district on Sunday, allegedly for marrying a woman from an upper-caste.
The woman's father has surrendered in court, say the police.
The National Commission of Scheduled Castes has asked the Tamil Nadu government for a report over the killing.
The police identified the victim as Shankar, a resident of Komaralingam in Madathukulam taluk of Tirupur district and Kausalya, 19, of Palani in Dindigul district, reported the Times Of India.
The youth was in his final year at a private college in Palani and she was a junior at the same college. They married eight months ago despite facing opposition from the girl's family. The newly-wed couple was beaten up by goons in full public view.
Shankar died on the way to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital. Kausalya is admitted at a local hospital with multiple injuries.
What is surprising is even though the bus stand was crowded, no one intervened to save the couple. Only after the assailants fled, witnesses rushed the pair to the hospital.
According to police, the assailants swooped down on Shankar and Kausalya with sickles on a crowded street near Udumalaipettai bus stop around 3 pm on Sunday, minutes after the couple had come out of a shopping complex.
Special teams have been formed to track the three assailants.
A senior officer at the office of Tirupur SP Saroj Kumar Thakur told the Indian Express, “Sankar’s family had been supporting the couple post-wedding; the couple lived with them. Kausalya was working at a local shop and had stopped going to college. On Sunday, they had gone to the nearest town for shopping when the attack took place.”
