IANS reported that doctors referred the boy to the psychiatry wing after putting three stitches, but police said he gave them the slip. Police is looking for the athlete who is out of danger.

IANS sources said the immediate provocation for the young athlete, who is training to be a short distance runner, could be a theft that was reported in their hostel.

In May this year, a 15-year-old girl died while three others, all undergoing training at the Water Sports Centre of Sports Authority of India at Alappuzha in Kerala, were hospitalised after they ate a poisonous fruit in an apparent suicide pact following alleged harassment by seniors.

The girls were suspected to have consumed the fruit, locally called 'Othalanga', inside the SAI women's hostel. Relatives of the athletes alleged that the girls were being physically and mentally tortured by some seniors.

PTI reported that the sprinter of the Lakshmibai National College for Physical Education was "under some mental tension."

"The boy tried to harm himself. He created a small cut on his left arm using a glass piece and was immediately rushed to the Trivandrum Medical college hospital here where he was given first aid and discharged," Dr G Kishore, Principal of the LNCPE, said.

"It was only a superficial cut. It appears he was under some mental tension," Dr Kishore said.

Meanwhile, SAI has ordered an internal inquiry to find out what triggered the incident. "We are probing the incident to find out what actually happened. A senior official of SAI has been deputed along with two others to probe the incident," Kishore said.

The youth, who has been with the SAI institute since the past four years, has also given a written statement that he was under tension. Kishore said the boy has said he was stressed out due to various competitions. This was being looked into, he said.
