Mukund Padmanabhan will succeed Malini Parthasarathy as the editor-in-chief of The Hindu, becoming only the second editor from outside the founding family of the 127-year-old daily. The decision was made at a board meeting of the Chennai-headquartered publication. Padmanabhan has been working with the group for the past 15 years and headed Businessline since 2012.

Business Standard reports: "The decision to appoint him as the new editor was taken at Kasturi & Sons Ltd (KSL's) Board meeting today, according to sources in KSL. Board of Directors and management officials were not available for comment immediately."

In January this year, Malini Parthasarathy, the first woman editor of The Hindu resigned, allegedly over differences with the board regarding the newly-launched edition in Mumbai.

The board of Kasturi and Sons Ltd. (KSL), publishers of The Hindu, appointed Parthasarathy as editor-in-chief of the daily at its meeting on January 20, 2015. She took charge on February 1, 2015.

Following Parthasarathy's exit, Suresh Nambath, the national editor of the paper, was overlooking its daily operations.

Padmanabhan, a LSE graduate, had taught in the Delhi University for a brief period before beginning his career in journalism. He had worked with The Indian Express before joining The Hindu.
