In a nail-biting finish, India managed to win by a run against Bangladesh after batting first and setting a modest target of 147 runs as the vistors lost many wickets in the last over of the match despite getting a wonderful start with their opening batsman Tamim Iqbal leading from the front with a 35-run knock to emerge the top scorer of the match.

Responding to India’s total of 146/7, Bangladesh started off in style scoring at a brisk rate in what seemed was going to be an easy win for the visitors, but lost momentum in the fag end of their innings. Bangladesh looked all set to win even in the last over as they needed only 11 runs from it.

It raised many a eyebrows when captain cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni handed over the ball to relatively inexperienced Hardik Pandya who was hit for a four by Mushfiqur Rahim in his second ball. With just seven runs to win from the remaining four balls for Bangladesh, the packed stadium fell silent as India stared at defeat. But then, as Dhoni’s peculiar decision-making skills have proved many times, the gamble of giving the ball to Pandya paid off as he got Rahman out in the very next ball, caught by Shikhar Dhawan. This crucial wicket took the steam off the Bangladesh chase.

With two runs required off the last ball, Mustafizur Rahman, who was on crease, managed to nudge the ball and scrambled for a run, but was run out the Indian skipper himself.

Being put to bat first after losing the toss, India set a target of 147 for Bangladesh in the World T20 match with Suresh Raina emerging as the top scorer for his side scoring 30 runs.

Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bowl first, a decision that proved right as Indian wickets fell in quick succession. With India’s star batsman Virat Kohli, who spearheaded the fight against Pakistan in the previous match in Kolkata, getting out at 24, the hosts were pushed onto the backfoot.

The only other batsman to score more than 20 runs apart from Kohli and Raina was Shikhar Dhawan (23). Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s efforts to steady the ship failed after he fell for 13 runs. Yuvaraj Singh was back in the pavilion after scoring just three runs.
