As spring nudges away the last vestiges of winter, Holi brings colour, unrestrained joy, a promise full of warm days and new beginnings. But once you're done playing, it could also bring itchy skin, rashes, irritated eyes and straw-like hair. Fortunately, there are a few simple tricks that can help you sidestep all these problems associated with toxic colours and enjoy Holi fully.
1. Avoid contact lenses
Wearing glasses will help you avoid colours getting into your eyes. If it is sunny outside, you can put on a pair of sunglasses. The glasses will protect the eyes from both the coloured powder and water. Contact lenses, on the other hand, will absorb the colours and the result will be irritation in your eyes. If your eyes do get exposed to colors, rinse them with plenty of clean water immediately.
2. Cover up with clothes
Make sure to wear clothes that cover as much of your body as possible as this will protect your skin from direct contact with colours. Thick fabrics like denims are best. To protect your nails, you can apply a coat of nail polish to help prevent staining.
3. Use organic colours
Non-organic colors may be filled with chemicals, oxides, metal or textile dyes, which may cause severe skin and eye complications. Some colours contain lead and benzene which will dry out the skin, while others can lead to allergic reactions or increase the chances of cancer. Opt for skin-friendly, natural colors like henna, turmeric, marigold flowers and tea leaves.
4. Apply oil to your skin and hair
Applying oil on every part of your body one day in advance will help in moisturizing the skin and ensure that it absorbs less colour. Applying oil after you finish celebrating also helps in removing the remaining colours. Rinsing the skin with pure water and then applying oil to remove the remaining colour is the healthiest way to scrub up since too much soap will dry out the skin.
5. Apply waterproof sunscreen
Holi involves water games, which may wash away regular oils or lotions. Thus, do wear waterproof sunscreen to prevent the sun from causing skin damage.
6. Keep Hydrated
Keeping oneself hydrated is the trick. Keep drinking water and juices as dehydration causes skin to dry and combined with harsh chemicals, the colour might seep into the skin.
7. Use lemon
Lemon is considered to have natural bleaching properties. Rubbing lemon wedges on one's face and body is a good option. Moisturize the skin thoroughly after lemon is applied. One may also use a toner as it will help one reduce chemical change in their skin from Holi colours.
Taking a few precautions will help create beautiful Holi memories with your friends and family and avoid the hassles of dealing with the unpleasant skin, eye and hair issues. Play safe and play smart.
