MADURAI -- A nose ring screw stuck in the left lung of a septuagenarian woman for the last one month causing her severe breathing problems has been removed by doctors, saving her from major thoracic surgery.

78-year-old Velammal had the screw removed by doctors at Velammal Medical College and Research Institute here yesterday and is now breathing normally.

Her relatives had tried to remove the nose ring some time ago, and in the process the screw went inside and got stuck in the lung.

Dr Prem Ananth, consultant pulmonologist and bronchoscopist, who led the team, said an X-ray revealed the presence of the screw in the lower left lung. As her condition deteriorated, they decided to remove it by bronchoscope, as the process of removing it by aspiration was complicated.

Forceps were inserted through the bronchoscope and the gold screw removed after a one hour procedure, normally used in the case of babies, the hospital quoted him as saying in a press release.

Vellamal was now breathing normally, he said, adding this technique had saved her from undergoing a major thoracic surgery.
