Following the arrest of an alleged agent of India's external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Pakistan, accused of illegally entering the country and engaging in subversive activities, India on Friday distanced itself from the controversy, saying the man had no links with its government.

After the arrest of a man, identified as Kulbhushan Yadav, Balochistan’s home minister claimed that Yadav was an Indian Navy officer of the commander rank, now working for the RAW.

Following the development, Indian High Commissioner Gautam Bambawale was summoned by Pakistan authorities on Friday to convey their concern over the alleged RAW agent’s illegal entry into their country and involvement in ‘subversive’ activities in Balochistan and Karachi.

Reports suggested Bhushan was detained in Chaman, an area close to the Afghanistan border in Balochistan.

“(The) individual has no link with (the) government since his premature retirement from Indian Navy,” India’s external affairs ministry spokesperson said in New Delhi, adding that “India had no interest in interfering in internal matters of any other country and firmly believes that a stable and peaceful Pakistan is in the interest of all in the region.”

Pakistan had accused India of stoking violence in Balochistan and Karachi in the past but it is for the first time that it has claimed arresting a RAW officer. India has dismissed all such allegations.
