The Pratyusha Banerjee suicide case has taken yet another curious turn, a day after boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh was booked for abetting the Balika Vadhu actor's suicide. Singh's lawyer Neeraj Gupta has decided to drop out of the case citing 'humanitarian' reasons. Gupta said that he was withdrawing from the case because he was "kept in the dark" about a number of details from his client and his family.
Speaking of his decision to withhold his services as Rahul's legal rep, Gupta told news agencies he was "only listening to his conscience,' and took the decision on "humanitarian" grounds. This could be a major setback for Rahul as he has so far claimed that he had absolutely no role to play in Pratyusha's suicide. Advocate Ashok Sarogi has taken over the case and has applied for Singh's anticipatory bail.
In an interview to Hindustan Times, Gupta has said that Pratyusha died because of something that Rahul did. "My soul did not allow me to continue with this. What my parents have taught me goes against this," Gupta told the newspaper.
Pratyusha's suicide shook the TV industry and Rahul has been in the middle of the controversy, owing to several news reports suggesting that it was his tumultuous relationship with the actress that triggered her to take the drastic step. Pratyusha's father, Shankar Banerjee, told IANS that Rahul "should be hanged till death or imprisoned for life."
While a lot of Pratyusha's friends have come forward claiming that Singh was abusive and would often get violent, it was only after the actress' parents filed an FIR that the police booked him for abetment.
