While the current narrative of online conversation has been largely dominated by Shah Rukh Khan's Fan and Salman Khan's Sultan, take a couple of minutes to watch the trailer of Traffic.

The film stars Manoj Bajpayee, Jimmy Shergill and Divya Dutta in pivotal roles and the trailer is heart-rending. Literally.

Directed by the late Rajesh Pillai (he died at the age of 41 in February this year), the film is an official Bollywood remake of the Malayalam film that went by the same name. In the film, a little girl's life depends on the generosity of another family, whose son has been declared brain-dead after an operation. While they eventually agree to donate the heart, the battle is barely won.

The film chronicles the near-impossible struggle of Manoj Bajpayee's character, a traffic constable who takes on the responsibility of beating peak-hour traffic to deliver the heart to its other recipient, the little girl. Pillai, who also directed the 2011 Malayalam original, is often credited as the man who brought hyperlink cinema to India.

Traffic follows the same plot with interwoven storylines involving several characters, a trait often associated with the genre. It certainly manages to leave you breathless with its quick cuts, rising tension and dramatic background score. The film could potentially feature yet another excellent performance by Bajpayee.

The film opens in theatres on May 6.
