The Morning Show,” starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell (and other supporting players including Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Mark Duplass), is the most talked about and star studded series of Apple TV+’s grand Nov. 1 debut. Charting the fallout after the firing of a beloved morning-show anchor, the series addresses everything from broadcast fame to uneven power dynamics in the workplace. It introduces newscaster Alex Levy (Aniston) right as she learns her on-air partner Mitch Kessler (Carell) was let go due to accusations of sexual misconduct. As Alex tries to navigate her way through the chaos, network executive Cory Ellison (Billy Crudup) further stirs the pot, bringing in a potential co-host, small-town reporter Bradley Jackson (Witherspoon).

Reviews of “The Morning Show” have been harsh. Variety called it an “underwhelming streaming misfire.” IndieWire described it as “rudderless and dull.” The Hollywood Reporter said the show struggles “to find its focus, tone and attitude toward its main characters.”

While some of that criticism may be true, we’re here to tell you it’s not exactly as bad as it sounds. HuffPost reporters Leigh Blickley and Matthew Jacobs talk through the highs and lows of the first three episodes of “The Morning Show,” which Apple is releasing all at once before moving to a weekly model. The service, which costs $4.99 a month, has to coast on originals alone, unlike most other streaming platforms, which come with a catalog of older titles. So, is it worth it?

The Bottom Line

Although “The Morning Show” has some problems with execution, the story of a newsroom scandal and its aftermath will keep your attention.

Leigh Blickley: “The Morning Show” was critically panned this week as stars and executive producers Aniston and Witherspoon smiled through a jam-packed press tour. And Matt, let me tell you, it’s been a confusing time for me since I, for one, didn’t think the show was quite as horrible as the reviews were... Is it just me?
