BARASAT -- A district court today sentenced eight persons to death and awarded life term to another convict for murdering a college student in 2014 in North 24-Parganas in West Bengal.
Pronouncing the judgement, Seventh Additional District Judge, Barasat, Daman Prasad Biswas, also awarded five year jail terms to three persons, including a woman, for the murder of the student Sourav Chowdhury at Bamungachi in the district on July 5, 2014.
Those sentenced to death are Shyamal Karmakar, Suman Sarkar, Suman Das, Amal Barui, Somnath Sardar, Tapas Biswas, Ratan Samaddar and Tarak Das.
Rakesh Burman has been awarded life sentence.
Three others who were awarded 5-year jail terms were Poly Maity, Sisir Mukherjee and Ratan Das.
He was killed and his body recovered from near the railway line on July 5, 2014.
Earlier, 12 of the accused had been convicted in the case. Another accused named in the FIR was however, acquitted for lack of evidence on April 15.
