Why This Indian-Dutch Designer Is At The Centre Of America's Biggest Celebrity Showdown

It takes you to have a healthy appetite for consuming fashion or Keeping Up With The Kardashians, to know who Rachel Roy really is.

The US-based fashion-designer who's known to have the likes of Michelle Obama in her clientele, has found herself in the middle of a raging firestorm, drawing ire from Beyonce's faithful fanbase (they're called Beyhive, just in case).

Why, you ask? The reason may confound you, just like much of the Internet does.

So here's what it is: Beyonce's new album, Lemonade, premiered on HBO on April 23 and set off theories connecting her husband Jay Z's infidelity as the potential source of inspiration for the lyrics that talk about a cheating partner.

In one of the songs, called Sorry Beyonce croons,

Big homie better grow up
Me and my whoadies 'bout to stroll up
I see them boppers in the corner
They sneaking out the back door
He only want me when I'm not there
He better call Becky with the good hair
He better call Becky with the good hair

Where does Rachel fit into this? Fans believe that she is Becky with the good hair. No, fans are convinced she is Becky with the good hair.

Yes. And they've good reason to fantasise about this (more on that in a bit).

More importantly, Roy has been torn-apart (she had to cancel an appearance in New York City) because she posted this on her Instagram page, hours after Beyonce's song went live.

The post has since then been deleted. But here's a quick background on Roy.

The fashion-designer, who is half-Bengali (Chennai-born father) and half-Dutch, is known for making several appearances as guest-judge on Project Runway and America's Next Top Model. She started off as an intern at Jay-Z's clothing line Rocaver and after working in all departments, gradually rose to the top, becoming the creative director of the firm.

Things get murkier from hereon.

Remember the one time when Jay Z got a solid beating in an elevator by Beyonce's sister Solange? Roy was allegedly the reason why the dramatic incident took place, as it was widely believed that Jay-Z had been flirting with Roy at the Met gala, hours before getting into the elevator for an after-party.

Roy was also married to Damon Dash, an American music-producer and long-time associate of Jay-Z. However, the couple divorced, with Roy getting physical custody of their two daughters. Jay-Z's association with Dash also went sour.

These are the several reasons that make Roy a very strong contender for 'Becky With The Good Hair.' Absolutely not shocking that tabloid theorists are pleased with this rare insight into Queen Bey's marital troubles.

The other alternative is that it could just be a co-incidence that Roy posted the Instagram update, like anybody would.

However, after Beyhive ripped Roy apart online (her daughter wasn't sparred either in what appears to be the fan-club equivalent of Salman Khan), she made her Insta account private, and said this on Twitter:
