Okay, so here is the thing, all this while, we were being stupid on purpose. Did any of us really believe Jon Snow was dead even for five seconds? We heard the people around us say it, we read the interviews and we just pretend-believed it. And then, as we sat and watched the second episode of the new season of Game of Thrones, we were like yayyy. But come on, did you really think he had died? Did you?
Let us tie up the loose ends first. If you are a person who has read all the books in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, then you know the last published book, A Dance with Dragons (2011), ended with Jon Snow being stabbed multiple times in the dark, by the men of the Night's Watch that were unhappy with him. The last sentence in the chapter on Jon goes like this:
It is easy to imagine he died, but George RR Martin must have had something really good up his sleeve to have kept us hanging for five years since.
As a show aficionado, Jon Snow has been built even more magnificently. He has led an entire battle (at Hardhome) against the White Walkers. The way he rose through the ranks at Castle Black was amazing to watch. In fact, the whole world was rooting for the bastard son of Ned Stark till that scene where a little child stabbed him first, followed by many. The watchers of the show did not believe it to be the end even when precious blood started flowing from the body of the handsome hunk that was Jon Snow.
To every claim of the show-makers that Jon was indeed dead, there were reverse theories proposed. Some fans believed Jon's eyeballs turned purple as the last scene of the fifth season ended, pointing at Targaryen blood in his body. Some discussed the pattern his blood was making as it seeped into the snow. The producers of the show, tired at having been asked the question a millionth time, literally gave it to us from the horse's mouth. Kit Harrington, the actor who plays Jon Snow told us he was in fact, "very dead." But while we were struck by that bit of information, we didn't stop speculating. Most of us continued to be in complete denial. There were many favourites before Jon Snow; Ned Stark, Robb Stark and Oberyn Martell who had died in the show before him. We were shocked in each case but we moved on. With Jon Snow, however, we just didn't give it a rest and the reason wasn't endless hope.
The fact that George RR Martin can bump off central characters is not news to us. The author has taken the idea of keeping central characters intact and cracked open its skull (literally). One after another, kings, princes, children have fallen like dominoes in this saga.
But we always knew Jon was different. A major plot that revolves around Ned Stark's sister, Lyanna and Mad King Aerys' son, Rhaegar Targaryen is still waiting to unfurl. How a righteous and just man and husband like Ned Stark could have a son with a tavern wench has always raised eyebrows. The books also talk about major events like tourneys of knights from the past, where Lyanna and Rhaegar have a strange yet strong chemistry. The fact that Elia Martell, Rhaegar's wife, has always been portrayed as frail and a little loveless in her marriage is no secret either. Finally, we have never been told who Jon's mother was.
So, we knew. We felt it in our bones and knew it when the GoT winds whispered in our ears. Jon had to be alive, resurrected or whatever it is you call the hocus pocus that brought him back from the dead. The biggest story of the biggest epic our eyes have ever feasted upon is waiting for its turn. And Jon Snow has to live to deliver it to us.
