Update: A previous version of this story said Mr Whig's father had a heart attack on hearing the news of his son's suicide. The family has informed us that this is inaccurate.

Vineet Whig, a top executive at Encyclopaedia Britannica, committed suicide on Sunday by jumping from a ventilator shaft in his residential complex.

Gurgaon-based Whig, who was the chief operating officer (COO) of the South Asia division of the company, and lived with his father, wife, two sons and a daughter, reported The Times of India.

The police told TOI that they found a suicide note in 47-year-old Whig's pocket that stated that he was ending his life as he was “fed up” with himself.

According to NDTV, Whig's suicide note said: "I am taking my own life, no one is responsible. I am unable to cope. I am sorry. I am depressed. I see no way out except for suicide. Yes, I am a coward. I should have faced life."

Whig was an avid photographer whose photos had been featured in the National Geographic Traveller.
