Since their launch of the Mi 5 in India, Xiaomi has been lying low. Meanwhile, competitors such as LeEco and OnePlus have been busy launching new phones. And, while they did launch a few devices, including a fitness band, in China, they have been quiet on the Indian front. So, it is a welcome sight to see them announce the planned launch of their giant 6.44 inch Mi Max phone on 30 June.

There are phones, there are tablets and then, there is Mi Max. Barely shy of a 7-inch tablet such as Nexus 7, when it comes to size this phone is big. Traditionally, size has been seen as an advantage with consumers in the Asian market who have been attracted to phones with bigger screens. For one, this makes it easier to read language scripts.

Mi Max was first launched in China last month. It runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 or 652 (depending on the variant that the company will launch in India). It has two options in RAM, at 3 GB and 4 GB. And the storage also comes in three variants, 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB. However, at this point it is not clear how many models of the phone will be launched in India.

Though large in size, the phone is actually quite slim and sleek, with a thickness of just 7.5 mm. Its humongous body allows it to pack in a 4850 mAh battery. But, sadly, there is no fast charging available. The MI Max has a dual SIM tray, with both SIM slots being VoLTE (Voice over LTE) enabled.

The 16 MP rear camera has Phase Detection Auto Focus facility, and the front camera will have a 5 MP resolution. Mi Max is expected to be in the range of ₹ 20000 - 25000. Those who don't mind big screens can use it in the office or while travelling. The phone can also serve as a substitute for tablet in houses.
