Motorola launched their mid-range series Moto G4 smartphone today on Amazon for ₹12,499. The planned launch of the phone was first announced on 17 May, along with its more powerful cousin Moto G4 Plus. While the G4 Plus is already available, Moto G4 will be available on open sale from today.
Moto G4 Plus costs more because it has a couple of features that the G4 doesn't -- a 16 MP rear camera and a front-facing fingerprint sensor. It also has built-in VoLTE (Voice over LTE) capabilities, besides turbocharging facility for the 3000 mAh battery.
Moto G4 doesn't have the option of increasing memory. And it faces strong competition from models such as Samsung Galaxy J3, Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, LeEco Le 2 and Lenovo Zuk Z1, which are all available in the ₹8,000-12,000 range. But if a phone buyer's budget is more than ₹12,000, they are likely to opt for something like the Moto G4 Plus.
Motorola's strength has always been software updates and, on the flip side, their cameras lack the punch of, say, a Xiaomi and LeEco which are similarly priced. Nor can Moto G4 be called a looker by any stretch. But the G series phones are known for their durability and consistency.
Motorola also seems to have changed their sales strategy. After selling phones online for a couple years exclusively with the online seller Flipkart, they have chosen Amazon as their platform this year.
Motorola also recently launched their first modular phones, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force. The phone maker has confirmed that both models will be available in India by October. There has also been some talk of launching another Moto Z model, called Moto Z Play. Motorola must be keen on making the most of the expanding Indian smartphone market.
