Jamshedpur turned peaceful Wednesday after police enforced a curfew yesterday following two days of communal clashes.

Police staged a flag march in the affected localities of Mango area in the city. The government had rushed in 15 companies of paramilitary forces to control hostilities. 103 rioters were arrested and will be sent to judicial custody after questioning.

Trouble flared up Monday evening when three men on motorcycles tried to snatch the scarves off women who were standing outside a theatre after a show of 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan'. When others reacted to fend them off, the men took out pistols and knives in a threatening show of force, before leaving.

That led to clashes between communal clashes, in which 30 people were injured. Many shops were ransacked and parked vehicles were burnt. The local police was unable to control the escalating situation, despite issuing prohibitory orders. Peace was restored with the arrival of paramilitary forces.

Deputy Commissioner Amitabh Kaushal told reporters that six FIRs have been lodged. Raghubar Das, the Jharkhand state chief minister, has ordered an inquiry into the incident and also appealed for peace to members of both communities.
