A 10-year-old girl in Huzurabad town of Telangana's Karimnagar's district died after a teacher allegedly made her kneel on the ground for 20 minutes as punishment for not submitting her homework, according to reports.
The incident happened on July 16 when Kolipaka Ashritha, a student of class V at the private Vivekavardhani Model School in Huzurabad was punished with five others for not completing her homework.
Ashritha's Mathematics teacher asked her to "kneel down for about 20 minutes", Huzurabad Deputy Superintendent of Police P Sanjeev Kumar told PTI. Ashritha, who already had fever, fell unconscious.
The girl later informed her parents about the incident and complained of pain in her knee. The parents took her to a neuro-surgeon who said that she had developed a blood clot due to kneeling down.
As her fever and pain in the knee increased, Ashritha was shifted to the MGM (Mahatma Gandhi Memorial) Hospital at Warangal where she died while undergoing treatment, Kumar said.
After she passed away on Thursday, her parents brought her body to the school premises and ransacked property of the school, the Hindu reported.
Police has booked cases against the school management as well as the parents and others for ransacking the school, according to the report. Based on a complaint by the girl's father Kolipaka Sammaiah, a case has been registered against the teacher although no arrest has been made so far in this connection. (With inputs from PTI)
