Consulting and outsourcing firm Accenture has appointed Rekha Menon as its new India chairman to succeed Avinash Vashistha who resigned in July.

"Rekha has made impressive contributions to our people and our communities," said Gianfranco Casati, Accenture's group chief executive, growth markets. "Her experience will be extremely valuable as we continue to build our brand and enhance our reputation as a leader in India."

Though India in recent years has seen a slew of women head multinational technology firms in India, women have traditionally been quite poorly represented in the information technology and consulting space. None of India's famed IT and consulting companies, Infosys, Wipro or TCS have had women heading their businesses in India.

Other Indian women, who are top bosses at the India offices of multinational IT and consulting companies, include IBM's Vanitha Narayanan, Neelam Dhawan of HP and Kumud Srinivasan at Intel respectively.

There is a palpable increase in the number of women assuming leadership positions in consulting firms. According to a report in the Economic Times, the number of women at the partner and director level is on the rise at firms such as Bain & Company and McKinsey Close to 30% of McKinsey's senior leadership is female.

Menon, who has over 24 years of industry experience, is currently managing director, human resources, for Accenture’s growth markets and has been leading the development and execution of the company’s human capital strategy for Asia Pacific, Middle East, Africa, Russia, Turkey and Latin America. Previously, she was managing director, geographic operations for India, ASEAN and the Asia Pacific Delivery Centers, where she supported the growth and development of Accenture’s Global Delivery Network.
