Malaika Arora Khan, who is currently dating Arjun Kapoor, opened up about her much-publicised divorce with former husband, Arbaaz Khan.

In an interview with Kareena Kapoor Khan for Ishq FM, Malaika said there were a lot of people who advised her against going ahead with the divorce.

“Nobody really encourages you to go right ahead. Even the nigh before the divorce, I had my family sit with me and ask me, are you sure? I heard this all along and perhaps rightly so because these are people who worry and care for you.”

As for the best advice? The actress said that there were people who called her a ‘brave woman’ and those who were proud of her decision. “That made me really happy.”

She further said, “If you are in an unhappy marriage and that’s what you decide to do you should do it with a lot of dignity, self-respect. Don’t let anybody tell you that you are any less of a woman.”

As for reactions, Malaika said there was admiration too.

“With me, I could sense that a lot of people were like, how the hell did you pull it off?”

She also said that it’s far easier for men to move on with their lives post divorce than women. “It’s the biggest disparity there is among all the other disparities there are which women have to face.”

She further added, “It’s never easy. As humans we start to blame other people. But for me, happiness is the most important. Arbaaz and I weighed pros and cons, we thought about a lot of things and then arrived at that decision. We just realised we’ll be better people because together we were just making each other and everybody around us really unhappy.”

The actress also said that although it’s difficult initially but every woman should jump into the dating scene with gusto after a divorce. “It’s not impossible,” she said. “Swipe left, right, whatever it might be! Have fun! For the first time in your life, you will also discover a kind of freedom. To be in a bed all alone is also a new feeling!”

BIKANER — Pakistani citizens in Rajasthan’s Bikaner have been asked to leave within 48 hours, district officials said, citing law and order situation in the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack.

Bikaner Collector Kumar Pal Gautam issued the order on Monday directing the Pakistani citizens to leave the district as it may create law and order problem in the wake of the attack by Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. Bikaner is the bordering district to Pakistan.

The collector, who issued prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), also asked the hotel owners and those running business establishments to not let Pakistani people stay in their properties.

The order is effective for two months and also bans the use of Pakistani SIM cards in the district.

China Social Media Erupts Over A Top Model's Freckles In Surprise Ad

China is apparently having an existential crisis over ... freckles ... on social media. The nation is furiously arguing about photos of a top Chinese model after she appeared in a new Zara cosmetics ad without enough makeup to hide her pale dusting of freckles.

Social media users on Weibo — China’s version of Twitter — accused the Spanish company of insulting or “uglifying China” by photographing model Li Jingwen with her freckles clearly visible in the ad, which was released on Friday, reported the South China Morning Post.

“Selling products in China had better respect Chinese people’s aesthetic taste,” wrote one annoyed Weibo user. “I don’t understand why Zara showed this face with a lot of freckles.”

Weibo comment concerning Zara ad featuring model Jing Wen and her freckles.

Others stood up for Zara — and the beauty of 25-year-old Li, who is known professionally as Jing Wen — with her freckles visible.

“Numerous international fashion powerhouses never reject models with freckles. According to Western mainstream beauty standards, the public is even fond of faces with some freckles,” said an editorial in China Youth Daily, the Post reported. “Those criticizing the model’s appearance are truly smearing their own Chinese folk.”

The “aesthetics of the Spanish people are different,” a Zara representative said in response to the controversy, the BBC reported. “Our models are all photographed purely, the pictures aren’t changed, and they’re not modified. She has always looked like this. Her face has not been photoshopped, she was photographed naturally.”

Jing Wen, who is from the southern city of Guangzhou, has not responded to the controversy. But in an interview with Vogue in 2016, she said she “really hated” her freckles when she was a young girl because “normally Asian people don’t have them.” She said she finally grew to accept them. “It’s okay. I like them, and that’s enough,” she told Vogue.

Imran Khan Says Pakistan Ready To Talk, But Will Retaliate If India Attacks

Pakistan was open to a probe but would retaliate if India attacks, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday in his first public comment on the Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed.

Khan said his statement was directed at the Indian government, which he said had blamed Pakistan for the attack without evidence.

“What benefit does this (attack) have for Pakistan when we want stability,” Khan said.

Khan said the Kashmir dispute could only be resolved through dialogue and said Pakistan was “ready to talk” with India over terrorism.

However, the Pakistan PM said the country would not hesitate to retaliate if it was attacked.

“If you (Indian government) thinks you will attack us and we will not think of retaliating, we will retaliate. We all know starting a war is in the hands of humans, where it will lead us only God knows. This issue should be solved through dialogue,” Khan said.

Khan said this was a “new Pakistan with new mindset”.

“It is in our interest that nobody from our soil spreads violence. I want to tell Indian govt that if you have actionable intelligence, share it with us, we will take action if evidence is found against anyone from Pakistan,” the Pakistan PM said.

The Indian Army on Tuesday said the bombing was masterminded by Jaish-e-Mohammed and Pakistan’s spy agency ISI.

Imran Khan’s comments come close on the heels of foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s appeal for UN intervention.

Qureshi wrote to UN Secretary General on Tuesday to help ease tension with India that has escalated sharply since the attack, for which India has blamed Pakistan.

“It is with a sense of urgency that I draw your attention to the deteriorating security situation in our region resulting from the threat of use of force against Pakistan by India,” Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi wrote to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

“It is imperative to take steps for de-escalation. The United Nations must step in to defuse tensions,” he wrote, blaming India for deliberately ratcheting up its hostile rhetoric for domestic political reasons.

Post the attack, for which Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned Pakistan of a “strong response”.

On Tuesday, the army said it had eliminated the top commander who carried out the Pulwama attack.

HOUSTON — An Indian-American couple was found dead in their home in an apparent murder-suicide at an affluent suburb in the US state of Texas, police said.

Police officers were called to the house in Sugar Land on Monday around 6 am.

They found the bodies of Sreenivas Nakirekanti, 51, and his wife, 46-year-old Shanti Nakirekanti at the scene.

They said Shanti was found with a gunshot wound to her head in the driveway of the home on Pendergrass and Sheffield Court.

Sreenivas was found in the bedroom with a gunshot wound to the chest and a small handgun nearby, police said.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicates Sreenivas shot and killed Shanti and then turned the gun on himself.

“The two fatalities fits the scenario of a murder-suicide. This case is still under investigation."

According to the authorities, a 16-year-old girl was asleep in the home at the time of the shooting. She answered the door for police when they arrived and told them her dad was not coming out of the bedroom.

She was not injured. The daughter is now in the care and custody of friends, Sugar Land city spokesman Doug Adolph said.

Friends said the couple also has a 21-year-old son who attends the University of Texas.

“The two fatalities fits the scenario of a murder-suicide. This case is still under investigation,” said the Sugar Land Police Department (SLDP) in a press statement.

“There is no danger to residents and SLPD is not looking for any suspects,” it noted.

People close to the couple said Sreenivas was a director at an energy company in Houston and Shanti was a computer programmer

Police told local press there was no history of domestic violence. Friends of the couple told local media they had received an email from Sreenivas that day, but police had asked them not to share the content of the note.

People close to the couple said Sreenivas was a director at an energy company in Houston and Shanti was a computer programmer, and they didn’t know of any problems between the two.

He’s one of the best friends for a lot of people, and his wife is known to a lot of people here in the community. They’re also involved in some charitable organizations. We are really shocked. What went on inside, we don’t know, so we’re trying to get more details from the police once they complete their investigation, said a longtime friend at the scene.

The murder-suicide is under investigation.

Indian Air Force personnel gather around the wreckage of one Surya Kiran 'Hawk' aircraft after two of them collided in mid-air and crashed during India's biennial international Air Show rehearsal at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bangalore on February 19, 2019.

BENGALURU — A pilot was killed and two others ejected to safety when two aircraft of IAF’s aerobatic team Surya Kiran crashed near the Yelahanka airbase on Tuesday, a day before the opening of the Aero India show, a top police official told PTI.

The mishap occurred during a sortie as part of the rehearsal for the five-day Asia’s premier Air show. The two aircrafts collided while practicing a manoeuvre, News18 reported.

“There were three pilots, one has died, two are safe with injuries,” DGP Fire Services MN Reddi who rushed to the spot told PTI.

A civilian was also injured in the mishap, police said.

“I’m aware of it (incident),” Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, but did not elaborate further when asked about the accident. She said this on the sidelines of an event in Bengaluru.

The Indian Air Force said a court of inquiry would investigate the cause of the accident.

Netflix Cancels 'Jessica Jones' And 'The Punisher' In Final Marvel Purge

Krysten Ritter, as Jessica Jones, is all of us right now.

And then there were no Marvel shows on Netflix.

The streaming service on Monday axed its two remaining superhero properties from the Marvel universe, canceling “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher.”

The third season of the Peabody Award-winning “Jessica Jones” ― a show that has received renown for its nuanced treatment of sexual assault ― is set to air sometime this year, while the second season of “The Punisher” came out in January.

“‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ will not return for a third season on Netflix,” the company said Monday in a statement, according to Deadline. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.”

“In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for ‘Marvel’s Jessica Jones,’” the Netflix statement continued. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

The two series are the final victims of Netflix’s Marvel purge, after “Iron Fist,” “Luke Cage” and “Daredevil” were canceled last year to the shock of many fans.

The move effectively ends the multi-series partnership between Marvel and Netflix that launched in 2013 and brought multiple characters together in the somewhat tepidly received superhero team-up miniseries “The Defenders.”

Bernthal, who played the eponymous punisher Frank Castle, reacted to the news of the cancellations on Instagram, writing that he was “endlessly grateful” to the community that has uplifted the character.

Ritter, who brought private detective Jessica Jones to the screen to much acclaim, posted a photo of the cast’s final script reading on Instagram and called the role “a dream to play”:

Marvel has not said whether these characters’ journeys will continue in some form, although the company did previously hint there might be more to come from fan favorite Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox.

Meanwhile, a new streaming service from Marvel’s parent company Disney is on the horizon, with a planned series focused on Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and another expected to star Paul Bettany as Vision and Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch.

Kolkata School Teacher Forced To Resign After Backlash Over Pulwama Remarks

A teacher of a reputed school has resigned after protests erupted over one of his Facebook posts, which did not favour describing the CRPF personnel killed in the Pulwama attack as “martyrs”.

Chitradeep Som, a 36-year-old history teacher, said the school forced him to quit for his February 15 post, questioning the logic behind hailing the jawans as martyrs “as they were just doing their duty”.

His stance on social media resulted in a huge backlash with many people accusing him of insulting the security forces.

Som said the netizens complained against him to the school authorities and his house was attacked on Sunday by a mob, forcing him to shift to a relative’s place.

“On Monday, the school authorities asked me to meet them immediately. Thereafter, I was forced to resign,” he said.

The teacher, however, stood his ground and argued that expressing opinion wasn’t a mistake.

“I don’t think I committed any mistake by expressing my opinion and I never intended to malign our forces. Only a portion of my post had gone viral on social media, and on the basis of that, my house was attacked, I was manhandled,” Som told PTI.

He also said a complaint was filed with North 24 Parganas police, following the attack on his house.

The school administration, however, denied Som was forced to resign and asserted he quit on his own.

“We have been receiving calls and messages from parents and others over his FB post. They asked us why someone like Som was appointed as a teacher by us. We were afraid that the school could also be attacked and the safety of our students might be at risk,” a school official, who did not wish to be named, told PTI.

He also said Som offered to quit after the situation was explained to him.

“He said he would resign as he doesn’t want the school to suffer because of his mistake. We did not force him to resign,” the official added.

A terror strike on a CRPF convoy in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir killed 40 jawans on 14 February.

Scroll.in reported that there have been at least four incidents in West Bengal where people had been targetted for their social media posts about the Pulwama attack.

The report said that mobs, not known to be associated with any party, had attacked and assaulted these people in their homes.

Alliance With BJP Shows Shiv Sena Is As Desperate As Modi's Party

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray with BJP president Amit Shah and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis at a press conference in Mumbai on Monday

NAGPUR, Maharashtra: Over the past five years, if there was one person giving Congress president Rahul Gandhi a run for his money in targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led NDA government, it was Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray.

Even after becoming a part of the Devendra Fadnavis-led government in November 2014, Thackeray never held back, criticising the Maharashtra chief minister, his party and Modi almost on a daily basis through his speeches and Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece Saamana.

The 58-year-old, who became party president soon after Bal Thackeray’s death in 2012, has struggled to match up to his powerful father’s violent rhetoric. While he managed to keep the party together, its firepower has also diminished considerably, forcing members to gripe and sulk over not being given enough importance by its larger alliance partner.

Over the past two years, the Shiv Sena chief had saidmultipletimes that his party would contest the 2019 Lok Sabha and Maharashtra assembly elections alone. Shiv Sena ministers in Fadnavis’s cabinet often told the media that their resignation letters were always in their pockets.

And then, on Monday evening, Thackeray put an end to all speculation at a joint press conference with Fadnavis and BJP president Amit Shah.

Uddhav Thackeray has put even a chameleon to shame. The announcement of this alliance was an insult and humiliation of the loyal Shiv Sainiks. It is an immoral alliance

“Elections come and go. We (BJP-Shiv Sena) have been together for over 30 years now. However, it was a little unclear in the last four years. But now we will openly display our camaraderie. It is time to forget about the past and make a new beginning for a strong Maharashtra and India. Hindus all over the country will be overjoyed by this decision,” said the self-proclaimed “Vaghachi Aulad” (tiger’s child).

He cited an “understanding over basic issues such as Ram temple and Ayodhya” as a reason for the alliance.

The decision has rattled Shiv Sena workers, who were gearing up to fight elections independently.

“It will be tough to explain to our core voters now. If the alliance was going to happen, Saheb (Thackeray) should not have targeted BJP so harshly all this while. But there must have been some larger considerations, which is why the alliance was formed. Saheb won’t take any decision which will harm Shiv Sena and Mumbai,” a Shiv Sena district president from Maharashtra told HuffPost India on condition of anonymity.

And it’s not just the Shiv Sena which seems to have been forced to eat humble pie. The BJP’s desperation to keep the alliance intact does not reflect well on its hopes for the election either.

“They had been consistently attacking us and even went to the extent of abusing us. The way national president (Shah) and CM went to Matoshree (Thackeray’s residence) to discuss the alliance has sent a wrong message to the BJP cadre. We can’t appear to be this weak but it is also a fact that we need Shiv Sena’s cadre support if we have to win in Mumbai this election,” a BJP leader from Nagpur said on condition of anonymity.

Maharashtra had given 42 Lok Sabha seats to the NDA in the 2014 election. That appears unlikely this year as almost every opposition party, except Prakash Ambedkar’s Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh, is likely to join forces to form a common opposition alliance.

‘Chameleon, not tiger’

While Thackeray may be hoping people forget his virulent criticism of the BJP for now, opposition leaders and social media users were not in the mood to let the announcement pass by without criticism.

Multiple tweets questioned Thackeray’s bluster over the past couple of years, and numerous cartoons ridiculing the alliance were shared on Facebook and Twitter.

“Uddhav Thackeray has put even a chameleon to shame. The announcement of this alliance was an insult and humiliation of the loyal Shiv Sainiks. It is an immoral alliance,” said Maharashtra Congress president Ashok Chavan in reaction to the news.

Shiv Sena and BJP leaders preferred to stay away from the media after the announcement.  Thackeray, Shah and Fadnavis did not take any questions from the media after the press conference and most party spokespersons refused to speak publicly about it.

In the past, Thackeray has equated the BJP to Afzal Khan, a Mughal commander who arrived in Maharashtra in the 17th century to defeat Shivaji but was instead murdered by him.

Thackeray would also read from Gandhi’s script occasionally, using a variation of the ‘chowkidar chor hai’ jibe to attack Modi in December. This was a month after he went to Ayodhya to “remind the BJP of its promise to construct the Ram Temple”.

Kulbhushan Jadhav Case: ICJ Refuses To Entertain Pakistan's Request To Adjourn Hearing

THE HAGUE — The International Court of Justice on Tuesday refused to entertain Pakistan’s request to adjourn the hearing in the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav to appoint a new ad-hoc judge.

The four-day hearing in the Jadhav case opened Monday at the ICJ headquarters in The Hague amidst heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following one of the worst terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad terror group that killed at least 40 CRPF soldiers.

Pakistan, which is presenting its case today, asked the judge to adjourn the case, citing the illness of its ad-hoc judge.

Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the ad-hoc judge for Pakistan in the ICJ suffered a cardiac attack ahead of the hearing.

Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan, who is representing Pakistan, at the start of the hearing said: “We applied our right provided to us that we can appoint an ad hoc judge.

“But since our judge is indispensable at this point. In light of the above Pakistan would like to place before the court that another judge to be sworn in which right has been provided under article 35-5 and the judge be given ample amount of time to go through the briefings before going ahead with arguments,” he said.

But the the world court declined Pakistan’s plea and asked it to continue argument in the absence on ad-hoc judge.

On the first day of hearing, India urged the ICJ to annul Jadhav’s death sentence and order his immediate release, saying the verdict by a Pakistani military court based on a “farcical case” hopelessly fails to satisfy even the minimum standards of due process.

Jadhav, a retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of “espionage and terrorism” after a closed trial in April 2017. His sentencing evoked a sharp reaction in India.

India moved the ICJ in May the same year for the “egregious violation” of the provisions of the Vienna Convention by Pakistan by repeatedly denying New Delhi consular access to the 48-year-old Indian national.

Under Article 31 of the Statute of the Court, a State party to a case before the International Court of Justice which does not have a judge of its nationality on the Bench may choose a person to sit as judge ad hoc in that specific case.

It follows that the composition of the International Court of Justice will vary from one case to another, and that the number of judges sitting in a given case will not necessarily be 15.

Bernie Sanders Confirms 2020 US Presidential Run

Sen. Bernie Sanders will run a second presidential campaign after battling Hillary Clinton for the 2016 Democratic nomination.

Sen. Bernie Sanders is taking another crack at the White House, telling Vermont Public Radio that he will run for president again in 2020.

“I wanted to let the people of the state of Vermont know about this first,” Sanders told VPR’s Bob Kinzel.

He is expected to make a video announcement later Tuesday morning.

The independent Vermont senator, who caucuses with the Democrats and battled Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, had long hinted he would make another run but said that he would step aside if a better candidate came forward to defeat President Donald Trump.

Sanders has long been known as one of the most progressive members of the Senate. A self-described democratic socialist, his platform calls for “Medicare for all” and a $15 minimum wage. He’s also advocated for free tuition at public colleges and universities, lowering the costs of prescription drugs and placing heightened attention on climate change.

Sanders won re-election to the Senate for a third term in November, taking more than 67 percent of the vote. That same month, he said he was considering a second White House run, but he told panelists on ABC’s “The View” that his primary objective was to defeat Trump, even if that meant the Democrats ran someone else.

The Vermont senator, seen on

“There are other great candidates out there, many of them personal friends of mine,” Sanders said during the November interview. But what I think is most important right now is that Trump be defeated ... and that we as a nation come together respectfully.”

When he first announced he would run for president in 2015, Sanders was scoffed at as a fringe candidate. By the end, Sanders had proved to be a national political force, amassing an army of loyal followers and unprecedented amounts of small-donor fundraising money. When all was said and done, he had won more than 1,800 delegates.

In recent months, that same campaign has faced criticism, however, after two dozen women came forward with allegations that they were subjected to harassment or discrimination by members of Sanders’ team. The senator issued a public apology to those who experienced such harassment and thanked them for speaking out.

“What they experienced was absolutely unacceptable and certainly not what a progressive campaign, or any campaign, should be about,” he said in a Jan. 10 statement.

Sanders has continued to poll favorably among Americans since the 2016 election.

There are also concerns about Sanders’ age. He would be 79 on Election Day in 2020, which would make him the oldest president elected in U.S. history.

Nevertheless, Sanders has continued to poll favorably among Americans over the last two-plus years.

The Harvard Harris poll, which releases its findings monthly, has repeatedly named him the most popular active politician in the country. Poll results from both January and December placed him among the three most favored political figures in the country, just behind former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is also eyeing a presidential run.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld has died at the age of 85, according to French media reports.

The news was first reported by Paris Match with another French outlet, Pure People, later adding that the designer had been taken ill in Paris on Monday.

The designer prompted health concerns in January, when he missed Chanel’s Paris haute couture shows, with another of the brand’s directors stepping in for him.

Prior to that, he made a public appearance in late November to switch on the Christmas lights on the Champs-Elysees.

Karl took over as Chanel’s creative director in 1983.

His illustrious fashion career began in the early 1950s, when he started working as an assistant to Pierre Balmain.

BJP And AIADMK Announce Tie-Up For Lok Sabha Polls

The BJP and the AIADMK on Tuesday finalised their alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, just hours after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) clinched a deal with the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK).

Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said that the BJP will contest on five seats in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu. Both the parties will also contest together Puducherry.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal said the BJP will support AIADMK in the by-polls expected in 21 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu. “We have agreed to contest elections in the leadership of O Panneerselvam and Palaniswamy in state and under the leadership of (Prime Minister Narendra) Modiji at centre,” he was quoted as saying by ANI

Announcing the tie up with PMK, Panneerselvam said PMK would contest in seven Lok Sabha seats. It was also decided that the PMK would be allocated a Rajya Sabha seat.

Under the deal, the PMK would also support AIADMK in the by-polls, Panneerselvam said.

By clinching the deal, AIADMK has stolen a march over the opposition-led front, led by arch rival DMK. Seat sharing talks in the opposition front, in which Congress is a key partner, have not concluded yet.

DMK’s efforts to rope in PMK into the alliance did not fructify.

PMK founder leader S Ramadoss described the coalition as “an alliance for people’s welfare, a mega coalition and a victorious alliance.”

“This coalition will be successful in all the 40 constituencies in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry,” he said.

12 Healthy Habits Of Couples Who Are In It For The Long Haul

If you and your partner want a successful, long-lasting marriage, experts say these habits can make a big difference.

What’s the secret to a long and happy marriage? It’s not grand romantic gestures. The trick is establishing healthy habits and doing those little things day after day, year after year.

We asked marriage therapists what the happiest couples say or do that gives the relationship staying power. Here’s what they told us:

1. They make a point to connect every day.

Couples who are in it for the long haul find little ways to stay physically and emotionally connected, even on the busy days. That might mean going in for a nice, long hug, listening attentively while your partner is venting (not looking at your phone, ahem) or offering words of affirmation and encouragement.

“Emotional connection is the glue in our relationships,” marriage and family therapist Jennifer Chappell Marsh told HuffPost. “Over time, these small interactions build into a deep sense of trust and intimacy that keep couples happy and together.”

2. They set aside time to regularly check in with each other.

When life gets hectic, couples often switch into autopilot and start going through the motions rather than being intentional about nurturing the relationship. Long-lasting couples, however, make it a point to regularly schedule opportunities to stop, slow down and check in with each other. It might be a quick nightly catch-up session before bed or a more in-depth yearly sit-down conversation.

“Planned check-ins are times when both are mentally prepared to provide each other the space they need to explore, resolve and plan,” marriage and family therapist Spencer Northey said. “One couple I know even has an annual ‘State of the Union Conference,’ where they rent a hotel room and have a ‘conference’ at the hotel bar to check in and make plans for the coming year.”

3. They know how to say sorry and mean it.

“In big or small ways, partners step on each other’s toes all the time,” said psychologist Ryan Howes. “Having the humility and maturity to recognize your role in your partner’s pain is essential for a long-term relationship.”

And, for the record: “Sorry your feelings were hurt” is a half-assed attempt. Instead, aim for an apology that expresses empathy for your partner, takes responsibility for your wrongdoings and shows that you’re working to change the behavior.

Howes’ suggestion? “I see that you’re hurt, and it kills me to see you in this pain. I take full responsibility for my part in this, and I’m taking these steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

4. And they don’t hold on to grudges.

Mistakes will be made. Fights will be had. It’s par for the course in any relationship. But couples who go the distance don’t hold grudges and let resentments fester. They discuss it, work through it and move forward.

“They understand that mistakes are lessons learned and not reasons to shame or punish each other,” psychologist and sex therapist Janet Brito said. “When mistakes occur, they are certain that they are still loved and valued.”

Spouses who don’t hold past transgressions over the other’s head are better equipped to maturely handle future conflicts, Howes said.

“There are some folks who seem to be grievance collectors, who hold on to every relational sin from their partner and wheel them out for the big arguments, especially if they’re losing,” he said. ”‘You forgot my birthday 17 years ago’ or ‘You made me pay for our third date’ are grabs at power and rarely result in a constructive conversation. The healthiest couples express how they feel if and when they’ve been hurt, they do what they can to make sure it doesn’t reoccur, they accept the apology, and then they work hard to let go and live in the present.”

5. They find little ways to show they are thinking of each other.

Take some time to remind your partner why you love and appreciate them.

Longtime couples are in the habit of regularly expressing how much they mean to each other. It doesn’t need to be some big, romantic overture either. It might mean shooting them a text during the workday to thank them for packing you a tasty lunch or picking up a bottle of the wine they were raving about on your honeymoon.

“It could be something you saw that reminded you of them, or you remembered a shared experience that made you smile and wanted to let them know,” therapist Juan Olmedo said. “The key is that it be spontaneous: Even an unexpected text message can brighten their day. And no reciprocation is needed. It’s just about telling them that you were thinking about them.”

6. They communicate about the fun stuff and the not-so-fun stuff.

Talking about the positive things in your life — an exciting job offer, the trip you’re planning with your BFFs — is easy. Talking about the less glamorous — your crippling anxiety disorder, the dissatisfaction you’re feeling in your sex life — can be decidedly less fun but important nevertheless. It’s often these tougher conversations that bring you two closer.

“Couples who stay together have uncomfortable conversations where they share difficult emotions,” Chappell Marsh said. “When couples feel their expression of distress is seen and heard, their bond strengthens, they become more resilient and their capacity for overall happiness increases.”

7. They accept each other’s friends and family, imperfections and all.

Maybe your husband’s high school buddy is a major story-topper and it really gets on your nerves. Or maybe it irks you that your mother-in-law pulls you aside at every family gathering to ask if you’re pregnant yet. Even the happiest couples occasionally get annoyed with their partner’s friends and family. It’s unavoidable. But these couples also recognize that if the person is important to their partner, it’s probably best to just smile and suck it up. (Note that the grin-and-bear-it approach may not be appropriate if the friend or relative in question is a toxic person.)

“They make efforts to get to know the most important people in each other’s life,” Brito said. “Instead of criticizing each other’s loved ones, they focus on their strengths and similarities, and find ways to cultivate a bond, especially if this is important to their partner.”

8. They make an effort to understand their partner’s perspective, even when they don’t agree.

Listening to your partner is important in any relationship but it’s only half the battle. Long-lasting couples hear each other out and then show that they truly understand the other’s point of view.

“We all have a fundamental need for understanding, so it’s crucial to find ways to tell your partner that you understand what she or he is trying to convey, even if you don’t agree,” Olmedo said. “Being able to say, ‘I get what you’re saying,’ or ‘I can see why that matters to you,’ can set the stage for you to get your chance to feel heard. Being genuine here is key.”

9. They celebrate their differences, not just their similarities.

At the beginning of a relationship, it may seem like you and your partner have so much in common: You’re both introverts who love hiking on the weekends, chowing down on Korean barbecue and watching Pixar movies. But as time wears on, it becomes clear that, although you may be similar in some ways, you’re definitely not the same exact person. Longtime couples can recognize that these differences keep things interesting and help you both grow.

“Some couples have the unrealistic expectation that they’ll enjoy all the same hobbies, have the same opinions and beliefs, and react to life with the same emotions. When they don’t, they can feel alone or even abandoned,” Howes said. “The healthiest couples are able to appreciate their partner’s different tastes and responses and react to them with curiosity instead of scorn. ‘What? You like that candidate? I’m so curious why that is because I have exactly the opposite reaction. Tell me more.’”

10. They don’t make assumptions about their partner’s feelings — they ask.

In the heat of an argument, it’s easy to jump to conclusions about what your partner is thinking or feeling. But successful longtime couples are able to focus on the context of the argument at hand, instead of making sweeping generalizations.

“Instead of making broad conclusions about a situation, they inquire about the circumstances and setting, in order to consider all angles,” Brito said. “They don’t assume what the other person is feeling but are curious to inquire and are prepared to listen without judgment.”

11. They balance “me” time and “we” time.

Couples who are in it for the long haul value and appreciate their individual independence but aren’t afraid to lean on each other for support — a sign of emotional maturity, said psychotherapist Elisabeth J. LaMotte

“They are able to balance separateness and togetherness. They can enjoy feeling close to each other but are also able to feel satisfied and fulfilled in the separate dimensions of their lives,” LaMotte said.

12. When they argue, their goal is to come to a consensus, not to “win.”

One thing that sets the healthy relationships apart from the unhealthy ones is how the couple approaches disagreements.

“The problems occur when people make it their goal to win every argument and conquer their partner,” Howes said. ”‘Winning’ in relationships should focus on the partners coming to a consensus, not one prevailing over the other.”

Often, couples who don’t know how to fight fair end their arguments prematurely because they’re too frustrated or heated to properly resolve them. But if you don’t come to some type of resolution — even a temporary one — how can you ever move forward?

“Even though arguments are challenging, you’ve got to stick with it to find the compromise or solution that you both can live with,” Howes said. “I’ve known couples who never seem to get to a point of resolution with their arguments, and this has a toxic effect on the relationship.”

'Rarest Penguin On Earth' Caught On Camera In Antarctica

New footage from BBC America shows what just might be a one-of-a-kind emperor penguin

Unlike its famous black and white counterparts, this one is covered almost entirely in black feathers ― the result of a rare genetic mutation called melanism.

“This could be the first-ever footage of an all black emperor penguin,” the clip from BBC Earth’s wildlife show “Dynasties” notes.

While the mutation may appear from time to time, the dark color makes it easier to spot by predators, making it very unusual for a penguin like this one to survive to adulthood.

“He or she could be the only one of its kind,” the clip states:

National Geographic has documented melanism on other types of penguins, especially the king penguins, which appear to have the mutation more often than others.

However, the magazine’s website says it has also found evidence of partial melanism in Adélie, chinstrap, gentoo, macaroni and royal penguins.

Convince Your Friend 'Imran Bhai' To Act Against Terrorists: Digvijaya Singh's Dig At Sidhu

NEW DELHI — Convince your friend “Imran bhai” to act against terrorists targeting India — is the advice from senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh to his party colleague Navjot Singh Sidhu, who is at centre of a political row for his remarks following the Pulwama attack.

Digvijaya Singh’s tongue in cheek remarks on Tuesday come amid the controversy over the Punjab minister asking whether an entire nation could be blamed for an act by “a handful of people” while referring to the Pulwama terror strike, which evoked sharp reactions from people.

In a series of tweets, Digvijaya Singh asked Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to show “guts” and hand over Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar to India, terming them as “self-confessed perpetrators of terror”.

Navjot Singh Sidhuji apne dost Imran bhai ko samjhaiye. Uskii vajah se aap ko gaali padh rahi hai (convince your friend Imran bhai. You (Sidhu) are being abused because of him),” the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister said.

Sidhu, who made his political debut as a BJP MP in 2004 but joined the Congress ahead of the 2017 assembly polls in Punjab, had drawn flak last year when he visited Pakistan to attend the swearing-in of Prime Minister Imran Khan and greeted the army chief of the neighbouring country with a hug.

The former cricketer’s latest remarks have evoked outrage in political circles as well as on the social media and he has also apparently been asked to leave a popular comedy show.

Digvijaya Singh also called for stopping “unnecessary persecution” of innocent Kashmiri students and traders across the country.

“Do we want Kashmir with the Kashmiris or without Kashmiris? We as a nation have to make a choice,” he said.

Digvijaya Singh said India as a nation has to seriously introspect how in last 71 years Kashmir, a valley of communal harmony of Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits brotherhood, has become a valley of communal strife and unrest.

“We are all to be blamed. Can’t we for sometime sweep our political differences under the carpet and come together to bring back the communal harmony and Kashmiri Muslim and Kashmiri Hindu brotherhood...which was the hallmark of J&K?” he said.

Forty Central Reserve Police Force personnel were killed when a Jaish-e-Mohammed suicide bomber rammed a vehicle carrying over 100 kg of explosives into their bus in J&K’s Pulwama district last week.

Pete Souza marked Presidents Day on Monday with some typical trolling of President Donald Trump.

The former White House photographer, who often mocks Trump on Instagram with throwback snaps from his time covering Barack Obama’s administration, posted an old image of Obama with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He captioned it: “44 and 45?”

Souza also posted a slew of other historic images in honor of the holiday:

Pulwama Attack: India Rejects Imran Khan's Response, Says 'Not Surprised'

NEW DELHI — India on Tuesday strongly rejected Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s response to its allegations of Islamabad’s involvement in the Pulwama attack, saying disclaiming its link with terrorist attacks is an oft-repeated excuse by the neighbouring country.

In a hard-hitting statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India was not surprised that Khan refused to acknowledge the attack on India’s security forces in Pulwama as an act of terrorism.

It said the Prime Minister of Pakistan has neither chosen to condemn the heinous act nor condoled with the bereaved families.

“Disclaiming any link between the terrorist attack and Pakistan is an oft-repeated excuse by Pakistan. The Pakistani Prime Minister has ignored claims made by the Jaish-e-Mohammad, as well as by the terrorist, who perpetrated this heinous crime,” the MEA said.

“It is a well-known fact that Jaish-e-Mohammad and its leader Masood Azhar are based in Pakistan. These should be sufficient proof for Pakistan to take action,” it said.

In a video message, Khan on Tuesday assured India that he would act against the perpetrators of the Pulwama terror attack if New Delhi shares “actionable intelligence”, but warned against any “revenge” retaliatory action.

Khan responded to the Indian allegations on Pakistan’s involvement in the attack in Kashmir last Thursday that left 40 CRPF personnel dead.

Pulwama Attack Is A Reminder Of The Failed Promises Of Demonetisation

On 8 October 2017, finance minister Arun Jaitley said that terror funding had been squeezed after demonetisation, the Narendra Modi’s government’s biggest policy gambit till date.

This was just one among similarstatements made by many BJP ministers, including the Prime Minister himself, in the two years since the shock move was unleashed on the country.

Days after the deadly Pulwama attack, in which at least 40 CRPF personnel were killed by a suicide bomber, opposition leaders, political commentators and ordinary observers are asking again whether the government’s claims of demonetisation hitting terror financing actually hold up.

The verdict seems to be: probably not.

There is no clear data to suggest that terror funding was affected after the ban on Rs 500 and Rs1,000 notes in 2016.

According toIndiaSpend, terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir have increased 177% over the four years to 2018. There has also been a 94% rise in death toll of security forces in Jammu and Kashmir in four years.

An analysis of Home Ministry data (compiled by South Asia Terrorism Portal) from 10 months before note ban and 10 months after, cited byNDTV, showed that terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir rose 38% after demonetisation.

Happymon Jacob, who teaches disarmament studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, told HuffPost India that arguments by ministers that demonetisation helped crack down on terror funding should not be taken seriously.

“There was a small period when probably the agitation had gone down,” he said.

Otherwise, he said, from a long-range point of view, demonetisation has not really had an impact on either the protests or violence in Kashmir.

In a comprehensive article published in The Hindu on Tuesday, Jacob had pointed out that, while Pakistan’s reaction leaves much to be desired, New Delhi’s Kashmir policy had also been a failure, leading to terrorist-related violence in the Valley spiking “drastically over the past five years”.

Conflicting views

In the months since the note ban announcement, several conflicting news reports have been published on the possible impact on the agitations in Chhattisgarh and Kashmir.

In November 2017, The Indian Express reported that documents recovered from the site of an encounter in Abhujmaad showed that Maoists had successfully exchanged demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Some police officers also told The Express it was unlikely that Maoist finances had taken a huge hit after demonetisation.

AnEconomic Times report from July 2018, however, quoted sources as saying that hawala cash transfers to terrorists and separatists in Kashmir have come to an abrupt halt.

The sources also told the newspaper that Maoist groups were at pains to “convert” the extortion money that has been stocked as piles of cash into ‘legal tender’.

Rammanohar Reddy, former editor of the Economic and Political Weekly and author of the book Demonetisation and Black Money, wrote inMint last year that “the less said the better about demonetisation ending terror financing.”

When HuffPost India reached out to Reddy, he said that the Mint article and the afterword of his book encapsulated his views on the subject.

In the afterword, he writes, “It is in the nature of terrorism that it has an impact disproportionate to the resources put into it. To therefore argue that demonetisation would weaken the roots of terrorism made little sense. As events have subsequently shown, disaffection in different parts of the country did not end after notebandi. They could not have because the disaffection was not fuelled by money. Statements like ‘Stone pelting (in Kashmir) has come down after demonetisation’ were meaningless then and even thereafter.”

On Monday, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav questioned the BJP’s claims that demonetisation had helped to contain terrorism and corruption.

Even as the Modi government faces tough questions over the alleged intelligencefailure that led to the deadly Pulwama attack, it is worth asking once again, whether the pain and misery of demonetisation was worth it.
