10 Best Cooling Foods And Drinks For The Indian Summer

$

This year, even the relatively cool Bengaluru has been hit by yet another hotter-than-usual summer, sending us scrambling to get our ACs serviced.

Our bodies, responding to cues from the weather, want us to steer clear of greasy, heavy and spicy foods. Summer means our bodies crave for cooling, hydrating and light foods. It is also imperative that summer meals don’t force us to spend too much time in front of the cooking stove, adding to the sweat and discomfort.

Come summer, I ensure I stock up my kitchen with ingredients like dahi (curd), paneer, poha, boiled potatoes, cucumber, mangoes and moong sprouts — food that can be made into quick and light salads and meals.

I was curious to know what kind of food (and drinks) people like during summer. I took to Twitter to ask people about their favourite summer foods and got a flurry of responses. Here’s what I found.

1. Dahi

Going by the responses, dahi or yogurt is the most loved ingredient in summer. It can be eaten as is or made into a variety of dishes, both savoury and sweet.

Curd rice, easy to prepare and filling, tops the list. This basic dish can be worked into quite a few variations

— Add chopped ripe mangoes

— Probiotic curd rice, the old fashioned way

— Turn your curd rice into a salad

—A cross between curd rice and buttermilk that you can simply drink up

Other than curd rice, dahi can be used to make smoothies, raita, curries, beverages and a lot more.

Have you tried dahi chivda or dahiwale aloo?

2. Mangoes

Indian summers and mangoes go hand in hand. What’s a summer menu without mangoes incorporated in every meal possible?

A tall glass of chilled mango lassi makes for a quick and filling breakfast. It can also be used as one of the fruits to naturally sweeten your breakfast smoothie. Mangoes are the perfect ingredient to experiment with in a variety of desserts.

An all-day mango diet going from breakfast to dinner and dessert comes highly recommended.

We don’t mind the indulgence of aamras and deep-fried puris for lunch with a dollop of mango shrikhand on the side. After all, we have to make the most of the season.

3. Nungu/Tadgole

Fruits from palmyra trees, also known as ice apple, can be eaten in its natural form or even blended with iced milk and sugar for a special summer drink.

The sap from these palmyra trees, called padhaneer (in Tamil), is also eaten in the southern parts of India because it’s a cooling agent that keeps the body hydrated.

4. Other summer fruits

Watermelon, muskmelon, grapes and litchi, with their high water content and sweetness, make for perfect summer foods. Eaten as they are or as part of salads, smoothies or juices, these fruits are a refreshing choice for hot summer days.

5. Curries made lighter

Come rain or shine, we Indians need our curries to go with roti or rice. In summers, we are happy to give the heavier gravy-based curries a break, resorting to lighter yogurt based curries, featuring seasonal ingredients like mangoes, jackfruit, bitter gourd and lady’s finger.

Try this curry featuring ripe mangoes and yogurt — Mango Mor Kuzhambu

6. Moong dal

The skinned, yellow moong dal is quick to cook and considered to be lighter and easier to digest than other dals and even recommended by Ayurveda.

This versatile lentil can be used, both in raw and cooked form, to make dal, kosumbari (salad), payasam or a light side dish with green leafy vegetables.

Soak a couple of handfuls of moong dal in water for 2-3 hours. Drain and keep in the refrigerator to add to salads. Kosumbari is a salad made using this soaked moong dal, finely chopped cucumber (or grated carrot), coconut and a tadka of mustard seeds, green chillies and curry leaves.

Summer drinks

Summer drinks are of prime importance this is the time when the body craves to be hydrated with water, juices and other beverages.

Here’s some of the drinks suggested

7. Yogurt based drinks

Buttermilk (chaas), sweet lassi and spiced buttermilk are some of the all time favourite thirst quenchers.

8. Coconut water

Coconut water is the best all-natural, hygienic drink that one can have on any street side in India.

9. Other Indian beverages

Nimbu paani, shikanji, aam panna, kokum sharbat are just a few of the Indian home favourites that offer much relief when we get back home after being out in the sun.

10. Rooh Afza

Rooh Afza is another iconic drink that people either love or hate. Mixed with iced water or milk, it is said to have cooling properties from the various herbs used in the ingredients.

Royal Baby: Meghan Markle Goes Into Labour - With Prince Harry By Her Side

The Duchess of Sussex is in labour with her first child, the Press Association understands.

Meghan Markle, 37, is in labour with her first child with Prince Harry, who is said to be by his wife’s side.

[Read More: Everything We Know So Far About The Royal Baby]

The Duke and Duchess announced that Meghan was pregnant with their first child on 15 October at the start of their tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The Sussexes recently re-located from the two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace, London to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor Castle’s Home Park, near to where they were married on 19 May 2018. Their new Grade II listed home was gifted to them by the Queen.

The pair have decided to keep the plans around their first baby’s arrival private, breaking from recent royal tradition which has seen Prince William and his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, pose for pictures outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, holding the newest member of their family.

Traditionally, princes and princesses were born in royal residences rather than hospitals – as avid viewers of The Crown will know. Queen Elizabeth II was born in the London home of her maternal grandparents in Mayfair, and her children were born in Buckingham Palace.

Princess Anne was the first royal to give birth in the now famous Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London – welcoming her children Peter in 1977 and Zara in 1981.

In a recent statement, Kensington Palace officials said Harry and Meghan ``look forward″ to sharing the news of their baby’s birth after they have celebrated privately as a new family.

There has been no comment as yet from Buckingham Palace on the impending birth or from Clarence House where Harry’s father the Prince of Wales resides.

Nor is it known if Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, has already flown into the UK from her home in Los Angeles to be at her only daughter’s side.

The Sussexes recently launched their own Instagram account @sussexroyal, where it is widely expected they will share the first picture of the baby.

Traditionally, royal births were announced via a public notice outside the royal residence in which the child was born, which would give updates on how the mother and baby were doing. After Prince Charles was born, the sign read: “Her Royal Highness, the Princess Elizabeth, has had a good night and is making satisfactory progress.”

In response to the grassroots #globalsussexbabyshower event, where children around the world sent their best wishes to the couple and baby to be, the Sussexes wrote on Instagram: ″[We] are immensely grateful for the outpouring of love and support in anticipation of the birth of their first child.

“The Duke and Duchess remain appreciative for your warm wishes and kindness during this especially happy time in their lives! Thank you for sharing the love ❤️”

'Gross Injustice Done To Me': Complainant Responds To CJI Clean Chit

The woman who had alleged that Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi sexually harassed her said in a statement that she was “dejected” that the Supreme Court’s in-house inquiry panel found “no substance” in her allegations.

“I am now extremely scared and terrified because the in-house committee, despite having all material placed before them, has given me no justice or protection and said nothing about the absolutely malafide dismissals and suspensions, indignities and humiliations suffered by me and my family,” the former Supreme Court employee said.

For the latest elections news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

The woman had withdrawn from the inquiry after expressing serious reservations with the way in which it was conducted, including denial of her lawyer’s presence.

She said she will decide on the next steps after consulting with her lawyer.

Here’s the full text of the statement:

I, the woman complainant, a former SC employee, am not just highly disappointed and dejected to learn that the In-House Committee “has found no substance” in my complaint, but feel that gross injustice has been done to me as a woman citizen of India. I am now extremely scared and terrified because the In- House Committee, despite having all material placed before them, has given me no justice or protection and said nothing about the absolutely malafide dismissals and suspensions, indignities and humiliations suffered by me and my family. I and my family members remain vulnerable to the ongoing reprisals and attack.

As is known this complaint in the form of an Affidavit was sent by me to the Justices of the Hon’ble Supreme Court on 19.04.2019. I am alarmed at the conclusion arrived at by the In House Committee, as my accusation of sexual harassment at the workplace and the consequent relentless victimization and reprisals against me and my family, are substantiated by documents and are verifiable.

On 26.04.2019, I had joined proceedings of the In-House Committee and from the very beginning expressed serious concerns and reservations that the manner in which the proceedings were being conducted would not mitigate the stark asymmetry of power between me and the CJI.

Today, my worst fears have come true, and all hope of justice and redress from the highest Court of the land have been shattered. In fact the Committee has announced that I will not even be provided a copy of the Report, and so I have no way of comprehending the reasons and basis for the summary dismissal of my Complaint of sexual harassment and victimisation

I have already placed my earlier communications with the Hon’ble Committee in the public domain through my press note dt. 30.04.2019, when I was compelled to walk out of the Committee proceedings as the Committee had refused to accept even my most basic requests for a fair hearing.

On 4th May 2019, at about 8 pm I received a hard copy of my statements recorded before the In House Committee on 26th, 29th and 30th April, 2019. On 6th May 2019, at around 10.30 am, I submitted Corrections of some inaccuracies in my recorded statements, to the concerned Registrar at the Supreme Court.

I will consult my lawyer and decide on the next steps. Today, I am at the verge of losing faith in the idea of justice.

Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Welcome Their First Child Together

The royal baby is here!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their first child, a son, weighing 7 lbs 3oz on Monday.

Mother and child are doing well, the palace has announced.

Meghan went in labor early on Monday, with Harry by her side, the royal family said in announcement prior to the baby’s birth.

The new royal baby will be seventh in line to the throne.

The prince and former “Suits” actress announced that they were expecting their first child in October, about five months after the royal wedding on May 19.

It’s not yet known what the two decided to name the baby, though the odds are high on Albert, Arthur and Philip.

Congratulations are in order for the happy couple.

Arianne Chernock, an associate professor of modern British history at Boston University, previously told HuffPost that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will have a lot of latitude with naming their little one.

“The child will be seventh in line to the throne, which puts them in a very different position than say, William and Kate,” Chernock said.

“We might see names like Alice, Arthur or Diana; certainly, they have a lot of resonance,” she added. “But we might also see names like Jeanette. That was Meghan’s maternal grandmother, who she apparently had a close relationship with. Or Alvin, her mother’s father, who she was also very close to.”

We’ll have to wait and see!

The Modi-Mamata Saga: Who Didn't Pick Up Whose Call And Why?

🙄Where to begin?

The fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election on Monday came three days after Cyclone Fani battered Odisha and parts of Bengal.

While PM Narendra Modi praised CM Naveen Patnaik’s efforts during and post the disaster in Odisha, he didn’t have anything nice to say about Mamata Banerjee.

“I am just back from Odisha after reviewing the post-cyclone situation. I also wanted to speak to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over phone to discuss the issue. I had called her, but Didi is so arrogant that she didn’t speak to me. I waited for her call but she didn’t get back to me,” he said at a rally in the state.

“Speedbreaker Didi was more interested in doing politics. I wanted to speak to the state officials but the state government did not allow that to happen,” he said.

Speedbreaker Didi. Much political rhetoric, such wow.

He also tweeted, “I waited, expecting her to call me back. But she did not. I called her again. I was worried about the people of Bengal, and wanted to speak to Mamata didi. But didi did not speak to me the second time either.”

Mamata Banerjee’s TMC had criticised Modi earlier for calling state governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to enquire about the ground situation in Bengal in the cyclone’s wake instead of the chief minister.

Since apparently the prime minister and Bengal CM only communicate to each other through statements at political rallies, Banerjee said at a public meeting in Jhargram, “Could not take PM’s call on Cyclone Fani as I was in Kharagpur.”

She said Modi had called her for a meeting at Kalaikunda, where he had landed for an election meeting after touring Odisha.

“Are we his servants that we have to go wherever he beckons? Now he will allege that I have not responded and have not shown cooperation,” she said.

“My (election) meeting at Jhargram today was fixed. Elections are on in West Bengal, while it is over in Odisha. Why should I share dais with an expiry prime minister during election time?” she asked.

This is not even the first time they’ve called each other these, um, names.

Their most recent exchange of words, however, had a twist.

I call it the “sweets saga”☝🏽.

That’s right, they fought over sweets.

In his totally non-political interview with actor and Canadian citizen Akshay Kumar, Modi tried to prove he had friends in the Opposition and said the Bengal CM would send him Bengali sweets once or twice a year, knowing that he was very fond of them.

Mamata Banerjee was like...

“We will give him rasgulla from Bengal. We will make sweets from soil and put pebbles in it similarly like cashew nuts and raisins are used in laddu that will break teeth,” she said.

And Modi was like...

“The soil of Bengal has the essence of greats like Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda, JC Bose, Netaji, SP Mukherjee and if Modi gets rasgulla made of this holy soil then it will be a prasad for Modi,” he said.

And I was like...

And all the politicians in the country were like...

 RIP Indian political discourse.

Missandei's Nathalie Emmanuel Has Fiery Response To Shocking 'Game Of Thrones' Moment

Nathalie Emmanuel, who plays beloved assistant to Mother of Dragons Missandei, couldn’t help but comment on Twitter about a shocking moment from Sunday night’s “Game of Thrones.”

Spoiler warning! If you’re not caught up with “Game of Thrones,” click away now, friends.

Westerosi fans were given a few bittersweet moments of happiness between the Unsullied leader Grey Worm and Missandei in the episode before the latter was beheaded. Upon being told she’d be killed by Cersei, Missandei was asked if she had any last words.

In line with her dear friend Khaleesi, Missandei uttered: “Dracarys.” The phrase is usually said by Daenerys Targaryen in an effort to command her dragons to breathe fire and light up something ― usually enemies.

Unfortunately, Missandei’s final missive was heard by no dragon and she was slaughtered, tragically, in front of Grey Worm.

In response to this horrifying scene, Emmanuel popped on Twitter and simply tweeted her character’s final word. The tweet immediately went viral and had nearly a half-million likes by Monday morning.

Emmanuel clarified in a follow-up tweet that her character’s utterance was actually a nicer way of saying “burn the bish.”

There are two episodes left in the series so it’s unclear whether Cersei will in fact burn, but one thing is pretty certain: Missandei will be dearly missed by all.

Prince Harry couldn’t wipe the smile from his face when speaking to the press about the birth of his new son on Monday.

“It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever possibly imagine,” the Duke of Sussex said, smiling and laughing.

“How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension,” he said incredulously, waving both hands in the air. “We’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there, it’s been amazing, so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

Harry added that the two had extra time to brainstorm baby names, as Meghan Markle was overdue.

Modi And The Stars: Meet The Men Hooking Modi Up With Bollywood

$

On 10 January 2019, a day before Uri released in theatres, a gaggle of Bollywood A-listers met Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a well-publicised round of schmoozing.

Among the many photos taken at the meeting was a group selfie which would soon be rapidly shared across social media, including by numerous accounts and Facebook pages overtly and secretly managed by the BJP.

Almost everyone in that selfie is instantly recognisable—Ranveer Singh, Varun Dhawan and Ayushmann Khurrana in the front; Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Rajkummar Rao at the back, and Modi at the centre. But on the periphery, there are two lesser known faces: the mild, middle-aged, bespectacled visage of Mahavir Jain, and the smiling, forgettable face of Maulik Parindu Bhagat.

Jain, a businessman with an interest in the Mumbai film industry, was the conduit between Modi and the stars present at the meeting. Bhagat, HuffPost India has learnt from a person who worked with the Modi campaign in the past, coordinates many of the activities of the BJP’s digital campaigns and is the son of Parindu Bhagat, or Kakubhai, one of Modi’s most trusted allies from his years in Gujarat.

As the selfies with Modi moved rapidly across BJP accounts, it became clear that the party’s purpose behind the interaction was to score propaganda points and influence young voters by suggesting that their favourite film stars held the Prime Minister in high regard. At least two attendees who initially did not post their selfies with Modi told HuffPost India that they were gently reminded by members of Modi’s team to post the photographs.

When former newsreader and columnist Sagarika Ghose criticised the photograph, Nation With NaMo, a Facebook page run by a shadowy BJP-funded political consultancy called the Association of Billion Minds, posted a sharp rejoinder on their page.

The Bollywood selfie, and the men on its margins, is emblematic of Modi’s preternatural talent for self-promotion and ability to leverage casual photo-ops and noncommittal endorsements by public figures into valuable character certificates.

It is also a sad indictment of an industry that has suffered violent censorship and threats at the hands of the BJP and yet continues to mouth homilies and platitudes to the government in power.

Jain and Bhagat, the two quiet men in the background, show how these seemingly spontaneous connections between Modi and Bollywood are actually the result of the tireless efforts of the BJP’s quiet foot soldiers.

Some inorganic love

Two months after that meeting, on 14 March 2019, Modi tagged everybody from Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, AR Rahman, Karan Johar and Akshay Kumar in a series of tweets, urging them to encourage their fans to vote.

The tweets attempted “clever” personalised puns for each Bollywood biggie. The PM’s tweet to Karan Johar said, “Because… it’s all about loving your democracy” (a reference to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham), while a tweet to Akshay Kumar, Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar said, “Thoda Dum Lagaiye aur Voting ko Ek Superhit Katha banaiye,” a reference to Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

This entire campaign, HuffPost India can reveal, was not an organic exchange of Twitter love and mutual admiration between the Prime Minister and Bollywood, but rather a carefully choreographed show.

The celebrities retweeted Modi’s tweet along with a message of their own — giving the impression that they were tacitly endorsing Modi and the BJP.

While Mahavir Jain told HuffPost India that the coordinated tweeting campaign was an idea initiated by the stars on their way to meet Modi in January, at least two attendees denied that this was proposed by Bollywood, and said they were merely going along with a plan that was communicated to them by Mahavir, and presumably drafted by the PMO.

Who is Mahavir Jain?

A quiet, almost worryingly polite businessman and occasional film producer in his early 40s, the most striking feature about Jain is, ironically, his deep desire to remain out of the public eye. Of the many photographs publicly shared from three separate meetings between Bollywood actors and producers and Modi, he appears in very few.

He’s the one in the brown linen shirt, second from left, in this photograph from an 18 December 2018 meeting between Modi and a Bollywood delegation. He’s a little more animated in the January selfie — he’s the one right at the back with his mouth half open.

Last month, Jain agreed to meet with HuffPost India in a stunning sea-facing apartment in Versova, which he described as his “creative space”.

He works amidst a tasteful mise-en-scene of a giant Buddha statue smiling beatifically at a room full of antique furniture down up in white and pastel shades. The windows open to an unobstructed view of the Arabian sea. A smiling picture of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar is perched on the wall.

Over the past two years, Jain said, Modi has had several meetings with Bollywood representatives

Jain is essentially a businessman with one production credit to his name — Dekh Indian Circus, a Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer that has toured festivals but has not been commercially released as yet.

Jain said he had first met Modi many years ago, and since stayed in touch.
Over the past two years, he said, Modi has had several meetings with Bollywood representatives.

“There were several meetings in the last two years. Whenever he would find time, he’d be willing to meet industry stakeholders,” Jain said. “His request was only one: I want to meet sensible people.”

Among the people Modi met in the last two years are Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Siddharth Roy Kapur. “He was very attentive to their concerns,” said Jain.

Modi, he said, was a big supporter of the industry.

“Post elections, big news will come,” Jain said. “He’s sincere, selfless, dedicated, committed visionary. Nor once did he ask anything of them, only wanted to give.”

The meeting that resulted in the famous selfie, Jain said, was set up at the initiative of director Karan Johar.

When asked if Modi had specifically asked to meet youngsters, Jain denied it, saying, “No. It was Karan Johar.”

Johar did not respond to text messages and phone calls from HuffPost India although conversations with other attendees contradicted Jain’s version.

Modi’s only request, Jain reiterated, was to get “sensible people.”

“Respected people, insightful people, people who can contribute to value addition,” he said. “Industry reached out first. Then I reached out to the PMO. And then we got an appointment.”

Who pressed for the pictures? Jain isn’t sure but he thinks it was either Ranveer Singh or Ayushmann Khurrana.

“Modiji had left after the meeting. Then it struck one of these guys that photo hasn’t been taken. So I went and requested. He came back to click the selfie and then even clicked individual photos with everyone.”

When asked if he sent messages to the attendees, asking them to share the pictures on their social media feeds, Jain denied that too.

“Why will I force anyone? They all did it by themselves. Some were even asking me for their pictures,” Jain said. “They were all so inspired by him that they wanted to post the pictures.”

HuffPost India reached out to Khurrana and Singh, who did not respond to requests for comment although another source confirmed that it was Singh who ‘spontaneously’ leapt out to request for a selfie.

“If you get a call, how do you say no?” said one attendee, making it clear that it wasn’t so much an invitation to meet Modi as a directive.

Modi’s March vote-tweet campaign, which was directed even at actors who weren’t part of the January meeting was a film-industry initiative, said Jain.

“While flying to Delhi, the fraternity people discussed what could be done for the Prime Minister,” he said.

According to Jain, Johar was planning to make a short film to urge people to “vote”, but that plan was dropped due to time constraints. Instead, everybody agreed to a social media campaign which would be initiated by Modi.

Jain said no instructions were given to the Bollywood actors on who to vote for, as long as they were urging people to vote.

Soon after the meeting, Jain sent HuffPost India an email formally withdrawing his participation in the story because he was an “apolitical person” and would not like to attract any undue attention for his work, which was “for the larger good of our industry.”

HuffPost India has decided to retain those sections of the interview that illustrate the close relationship between Bollywood and the BJP.

The Gujarat connection

If Jain was the person who delivered Bollywood to the Prime Minister, Maulik Bhagat is the man tasked with amplifying Modi’s public persona.

HuffPost India cannot establish if Bhagat personally oversaw the publicity around the Bollywood visits but Bhagat’s role in helping shape Modi’s social media strategy dates from his time in Gujarat, according to people who have worked closely on Modi’s campaigns.

A 2014 article in the Ahmedabad Mirror credits Bhagat with beginning “Modi’s social media revolution some 12 years ago in a small but significant manner”. In 2014, an article in DNA described Bhagat as an “independent professional” anchoring Modi’s social media strategy from Gujarat. When NDTV journalist Sreenivasan Jain was reporting on Modi’s campaign for the 2012 Gujarat assembly elections, he described meeting a 27-year-old Bhagat in an office tower in Ahmedabad.

“He’s a new, but integral part of the Modi spin team, creating the concept for a series of popular ‘kabbadi’ ads, meant to highlight the leaderless state of the Gujarat Congress. Maulik says he is also coordinating the Chief Minister’s mammoth online and social media campaign,” Jain wrote.

Bhagat’s company, Nascent Infotechnologies Pvt. Ltd, has worked on the BJP’s social media election campaigns, according to the party’s campaign expenditure reports filed with the Election Commission of India.
In the 2017 state elections in Gujarat, for instance, the BJP paid Nascent Info Technologies Rs 43,80,532 for social media advertising.

In April 2019,HuffPost India reported on how the BJP is running a sophisticated misinformation campaign on Facebook and WhatsApp. The Bollywood selfie appeared on pages covertly run by the BJP, revealing just how calculated most of Modi and the BJP’s actions are.

Maulik Bhagat didn’t respond to queries emailed by HuffPost India.

Bhagat’s father, Parindu Kanhiyalal Bhagat, is known to be one of Modi’s closest confidants over the years. Colloquially known as Kakubhai, Parindu Bhagat was appointed as an independent director to the Indian Oil Corporation of India (IOCL) in December 2015. In FY17-18, he served on the audit committee, chaired the Corporate Social Responsibility and Development Committee of IOCL, India’s largest commercial oil company, and was paid Rs 15,22,200 in sitting fees according to IOCL’s annual report.

Mahavir Jain, a businessman with links to Bollywood, and Maulik Bhagat, a businessman with links to Modi, offer a glimpse of how the BJP has used its five years in power to build a wide network of allies in the party’s quest to normalise Narendra Modi’s past as a riot-tainted Chief Minister of Gujarat

When Modi became prime minister, multiple media reports suggested that Parindu Bhagat could be appointed the BJP treasurer, though that didn’t happen.

Parindu’s father, Maulik’s grandfather, Kanhaiyalal Bhagat, better known as Bachubhai, was Modi’s mentor in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), according to these reports.

Mahavir Jain, a businessman with links to Bollywood, and Maulik Bhagat, a businessman with links to Modi, offer a glimpse of how the BJP has used its five years in power to build a wide network of allies in the party’s quest to normalise Narendra Modi’s past as a riot-tainted Chief Minister of Gujarat, and painstakingly construct a statesman-like image for the man who hopes to remain India’s Prime Minister.

In hindsight, Modi’s well-publicised meetings with Bollywood were one part of what appears to be a much broader campaign that has included actor Vivek Oberoi’s Modi biopic (which almost released in the midst of elections), and a multi-part Modi series on Eros Now, a video-streaming service.

‘Apolitical’ bunnies

It is not unknown for film stars to cross over into politics—in 1984, Amitabh Bachchan contested and won from Allahabad on a Congress ticket in elections held in the immediate aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the anti-Sikh riots that followed.

At the time, Bachchan was at the height of his stardom.

In 1983, he had starred as the genre-defining underdog in Coolie, one of his finest films.

As an aside: Former Prime Minister V.P. Singh, who was the Congress’s UP state president at the time, recalls that Bachchan appeared at the party office with his face covered in a towel to avoid attracting too much attention, In his memoir, Manzilon Se Zyaada Safar Singh claims he didn’t recognise Bachchan as he didn’t watch films.

Bachchan went on to win the election by a huge margin, but stepped down midway through his term.

Today’s generation of stars have found a different way to engage with power. Where Bachchan conceivably sought to enter the arena, today’s A-listers are content to curry favour with the BJP under the guise of “nationalism”, but claim to be “apolitical” when they are called out.

In February 2019, Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh were asked for their views on a politically charged song from the soundtrack of their film Gully Boy. The song in question, Azaadi, was modelled on a famous speech by former student leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who was jailed by the Modi government.

“I don’t think that we ever give out a very strong political vibe in general as actors,” Bhatt demurred, despite posing for the selfie with Modi only a month previously.

“I’m very very apathetic when it comes to politics,” Ranveer Singh said, despite the fact he had also posted a picture of himself hugging Modi. “We’re happy bunnies going like, bolo azaadi.”

Cut back to the day of that meeting. On 10 January, Amit Malviya, the head of the BJP’s IT cell, tweeted a video that showed the stars who met Modi crowding the aisle of a chartered jet and chanting a dialogue from Uri, which would soon be appropriated by the party.

“How’s the josh?” shouted Vicky Kaushal, Uri’s lead actor.

“High, sir!” called back the actors.

The video ended with lusty chants of ’Jai Hind!’

In his tweet, Malviya asked, “Have we ever heard film-stars chanting Jai Hind like this before? This is what changed in 4 years!”

Kim Kardashian's 2019 Met Gala Dress Is Peak Kim K

If there’s one thing Kim Kardashian knows how to wear, it’s a tight dress

The reality TV queen arrived at the annual Met Gala in New York on Monday night dressed in what might be the most typical Kim K look she’s ever worn. The ensemble consisted of an extremely form-fitting naked dress with ruched detailing along the front and a plunging neckline. The dress also featured dangling crystals, making it look as though Kardashian was literally dripping in diamonds. (Britney Spears did it first though.)

Kim Kardashian walks the red carpet at the 2019 Met Gala. Kanye West and Kardashian at the Met Gala.

The mother of three combined the dress with a pair of clear heels and wore a wet-look hairstyle. Her makeup was also pretty true to form: smoky eyes and thick black eyeliner.

Kardashian attended the event with husband Kanye West, who opted for a plain black ensemble.

Did their outfits match the “camp” theme? Not really. But were they perfectly suited to them? Definitely.

Here's How 'Game Of Thrones' Cast Members Feel About That Coffee Cup Blunder

She’s fought the dead, and she’s faced Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). But Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) took the biggest risk of all on “Game of Thrones” this week when she placed an order at Starbucks ... because you know the barista spelled her name wrong.

“Ummm, latte for Dayneris?”

Fans watching Season 8, Episode 4, titled “The Last of the Starks,” noticed something peculiar during the post-battle celebration in Winterfell: a coffee cup with a white plastic lid sitting in front of the Mother of Dragons. (Many guessed it was a Starbucks cup, though art director Hauke Richter told TMZ the coffee was actually from a local shop in Banbridge, Northern Ireland, near where they filmed.)

The to-go cup shows up during the scene when Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) is bragging about the many talents of Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

“Most people get bloody murdered, they stay that way. Not this one,” Tormund says as Dany and her coffee scowl from a distance.

The cup can be seen at the bottom right of the photo, on the table in front of Dany.

Hivju joked about the mistake when HuffPost spoke to him after the episode aired.

“Product placement?” he said, laughing. “Maybe it’s made of wood and it just looks like a Starbucks cup?”

John Bradley, who plays Samwell Tarly, was a little more forthcoming, admitting that the moment was “really unfortunate.”

“It’s just one of those things. You can’t be pointing the finger because everybody makes mistakes,” he told HuffPost. “We’re all trying to create a kind of unique landscape and escape. ... It takes you out of that moment and brings you back in the real world.”

Although Bradley knows the coffee cup’s placement might have distracted fans, he thinks all will be forgiven because, well, accidents happen. (Especially when you have an exhausted crew who just finished shooting a 55-night battle sequence.)

“I think so many shows have human mistakes like that,” Bradley said. “People will forgive for that. People are invested in it. I don’t think you’re going to drag people out of it too much.”

Still, after getting this little peek behind the scenes of the hugely successful HBO show, we couldn’t help but wonder: What is Emilia Clarke’s coffee order?

“I don’t know what kind of coffee Emilia is drinking, but judging by her performance this year, it’s so strong ... I’ll have a cup, please,” Bradley played along.

In a statement to HuffPost, HBO said, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

Bradley concluded, “I don’t know what Emilia’s drinking, but the energy she’s giving throughout the season is superb. Her action, her emotion, all that stuff plays on her face. She’s reached such a level of performance and such a level of complexity and such a level of nuance for Daenerys that I’m just entranced by her every time I see her on the screen.”

Entranced is one way to put it.

Here's Why Jon Snow Didn't Pet Ghost In His 'Game Of Thrones' Goodbye

Was Jon Snow ghosting Ghost in Season 8 of “Game of Thrones”?

In Episode 4 on Sunday, Snow (Kit Harington) chucks up the deuces to Winterfell as he heads south to bring the Northern army to fight for Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). He has a number of goodbyes with fam and friends, including Tormund (Kristofer Hivju), Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) and Gilly (Hannah Murray). But when he sees his faithful direwolf Ghost, First of His Name, The Goodest of Good Boys, who’s just off to the side looking on, this happens:

Howl you gonna just walk away, Jon?

Yep. Just a little Paws.

So what’s going on here? Jon and Ghost definitely had a moment, but didn’t the direwolf just lose an ear fighting the army of the dead for the King in the North? Should it have been more?

The scene left fans wondering one thing: Why didn’t Jon just pet Ghost?

Well, now that mystery has been solved thanks to director David Nutter.

“Since the direwolves are kind of CG creations, we felt it best to keep it as simple as possible,” said Nutter. “And I think that it played out much more powerfully that way.”

“Game of Thrones” visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer previously explained the difficulties of bringing the direwolves to life ahead of Season 8, saying real wolves need to be filmed and scaled up. And unfortunately, those wolves “only behave in certain ways.”

“Keeping Ghost off to the side, I thought that played out better,” said Nutter, adding that it gave Jon a chance to be with Tormund and Gilly before having one last moment with his wolf.

“Then he just walks off by himself, he turns to Ghost and has this moment with Ghost that I thought was very, very powerful.”

The actors behind Samwell and Tormund, Bradley and Hivju, also reflected on the Ghost moment, agreeing that Jon sending his direwolf north was the right choice to make.

Bradley told HuffPost, “I think that Jon knows what he’s leaving behind. Jon Snow is a noble man, and he knows all about sacrifice ... He knows what he has to keep safe, and he knows he has a responsibility to Ghost and a responsibility to Sam, Gilly and Baby Sam because he knows where they’ll be safe.”

He added, “He was very aware of the sacrifice of leaving those figures behind, and they know — hopefully, Ghost knows what he means to Jon — and Jon knows what Ghost means to him.”

In another interview, Hivju told our own Leigh Blickley, “I think Jon is right that the south isn’t the place for a direwolf. In Episode 2 or 3 they killed one of them [Lady, Sansa’s direwolf] — it’s a wild animal, it’s like a wolf plus two! I think it’s best for Ghost to go north.”

And if you’re worried about not seeing more Ghost in the future, Hivju is up for that fan-proposed Tormund and Ghost spinoff ... if they make it.

“Well, there’s still two more episodes to go. We don’t know if they survive.”

What is Ghost may never die.

2 Reuters Journalists Jailed In Myanmar Freed After 500 Days In Prison

Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo gesture as they walk free outside Insein prison after receiving a presidential pardon in Yangon, Myanmar, May 7, 2019.

YANGON — Two Reuters journalists jailed in Myanmar after they were convicted of breaking the Official Secrets Act walked free from a prison on the outskirts of Yangon on Tuesday after spending more than 500 days behind bars, witnesses said.

The two reporters, Wa Lone, 33, and Kyaw Soe Oo, 29, had been convicted in September and sentenced to seven years in jail, in a case that raised questions about Myanmar’s progress toward democracy and sparked an outcry from diplomats and human rights advocates.

President Win Myint has pardoned thousands of other prisoners in mass amnesties since last month. It is customary in Myanmar for authorities to free prisoners across the country around the time of the traditional New Year, which began on April 17.

Reuters has said the two men did not commit any crime and had called for their release.

Before their arrest in December 2017, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo had been working on an investigation into the killing of 10 Rohingya Muslim men and boys by security forces and Buddhist civilians in western Myanmar’s Rakhine State during an army crackdown that began in August 2017. The operation sent more than 730,000 Rohingya fleeing to Bangladesh, according to U.N. estimates.

The report the two men authored, featuring testimony from perpetrators, witnesses and families of the victims, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in May, adding to a number of accolades received by the pair for their journalism. (https://reut.rs/2KFTSgQ)

A spokesman for the Myanmar government could not immediately be reached for comment.

Myanmar’s Supreme Court had rejected the journalists’ final appeal in April. They had petitioned the country’s top court, citing evidence of a police set-up and lack of proof of a crime, after the Yangon High Court dismissed an earlier appeal in January.

The reporters’ wives wrote a letter to the government in April pleading for a pardon, not, they said, because their husbands had done anything wrong, but because it would allow them to be released from prison and reunited with their families.

Billy Porter arrives for the 2019 Met Gala in New York.

We didn’t think anyone could top Lady Gaga’s Met Gala outfits ― yes, there were multiple ― but Billy Porter came pretty darn close.

The performer and “Pose” star made a grand entrance with the help of a group of shirtless men who carried him inside. For fashion’s biggest night, he channeled the Egyptian goddess Isis, one of the “most important goddesses of ancient Egypt,” according to Encyclopedia Brittanica.

Porter’s golden ensemble, designed by The Blonds, also brought to mind a phoenix rising from the ashes

Lady Gaga arrives at the 2019 Met Gala in a Brandon Maxwell gown.

Lady Gaga sure knows how to make an entrance.

The singer and actress was one of the first A-listers to arrive at the 2019 Met Gala in New York on Monday, and she definitely brought the drama. When she first stepped on the pink carpet, she was wearing a billowing fuchsia gown with a full train and a matching hair bow. She complemented the over-the-top gown with some campy, almost cartoonish makeup.

But that was just the first look.

Apparently, Gaga can add “quick-change artist” to her resume, because even before everyone got a good look at her fuchsia gown, which was designed by Brandon Maxwell, she was clad in a black strapless number.

It didn’t stop there. After the black gown, the Oscar winner stripped down once again to reveal a hot pink satin gown with major Marilyn-Monroe-in-“Gentlemen-Prefer-Blondes” vibes.

Annnnnd there was even more. Or perhaps less, depending on how you look at it. Following the pink satin dress, the “A Star Is Born” actress stripped once again to reveal black lingerie and fishnet stockings.

Lady Gaga poses with designer Brandon Maxwell.

This look is going to be hard to top.

Katy Perry Actually Lit Up The 2019 Met Gala Red Carpet

Katy Perry showed up with an electrifying interpretation of the 2019 Met Gala theme.

Fashion icons and Hollywood’s biggest stars stepped out on the first Monday in May for the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala. This year’s exhibit and theme is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” inspired by Susan Sontag’s famous 1964 essay in which she argues that “camp” is “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration ... style at the expense of content.”

Perry collaborated with Moschino designer Jeremy Scott on her outrageous chandelier-inspired outfit for the night.

“Who has ever been to a ball that did not have a chandelier?!” Scott asked Vogue. “The idea of elegance itself is quite camp and I wanted to play with that concept, poke a lil fun at it with a loving nudge.”

Kerry’s outfit is perhaps even more intricate than one would imagine. Scott told Vogue it took his team six weeks just to place thousands of Swarovski crystals on the dress. Then they used actual chandelier parts and created a corset with two hidden battery packs so the outfit actually functions as a light fixture.

Perry mastered the art of balancing a wobbling chandelier headpiece while walking the red carpet. The outfit is covered in Swarovski crystals that took dressmakers six weeks to create.

Perry’s red carpet look seems like one of her two outfits for the event, as she teased in photos posted to Instagram.

“First we set the table, then we dine,” she captioned the post. In the first photo, Perry showcased her sparkly shoes from her chandelier outfit. A second photo featured jewel-encrusted sneakers and a clutch that resembled cheeseburgers.

Celine Dion Admitted She Didn't Understand Met Gala Theme But Nailed It Anyway

Celine Dion told reporters on Monday that she didn’t fully understand the theme of the 2019 Met Gala, but that didn’t stop her from arriving in unforgettable fashion.

This year’s theme for the Costume Institute’s annual fashion exhibition and gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” inspired by a 1964 Susan Sontag essay. Sontag argued that “camp” is the “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration ... style at the expense of content ... the triumph of the epicene style.”

Dion, whether she fully understood the theme or not, nailed it. The icon appeared on the red carpet wearing a magnificent fringed ensemble by Oscar de la Renta with a matching sparkly crown. According to People, the outfit was inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies and took 3,000 hours for 52 master embroiderers to create. Oh, and it weighed over 22 pounds, which means Dion is basically weightlifting while partying tonight.

This outfit reportedly weighs 22 pounds. The glitzy ensemble was inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies.

“I don’t want to take it off,” Dion told reporters, according to The New York Times. “I want to sleep in it!”

While speaking to E! News on the red carpet, Dion said she was at first confused by the theme, thinking it was about going camping.

“I thought it meant ‘camping,’” she said. “We’re going to be at the Met and everyone is going to stay and sleep all night together. But no.”

Maybe next year?

Wild And Funny Things People Do To Avoid Spoilers At Work

Not all of us have the time to see the latest Marvel movie or episode of an HBO show the minute it comes out. These shows are a commitment: “Game of Thrones” episodes this final season are each expected to be around an hour or longer, and the three-hour runtime of “Avengers: Endgame” has even sparked guides on the best time to take a bathroom break during the film.

Working professionals who are also super fans have to get creative if they want to avoid spoilers during their 9-to-5 jobs before they have a chance to watch. Below, seven people share their stories of how they effectively blocked spoilers at work:

Banish coworkers to coffee shops

“I specifically told my coworker I wasn’t going to see ‘Avengers’ till Thursday, so when he and a coworker wanted to talk about it, they had to leave the building and walk across our work campus to the Starbucks to discuss.

When another coworker asked about the movie, I stood up and said they couldn’t discuss. She said she just wanted to know if it was good, not any details. I told her I don’t even want to hear that info.” ― Chris Avis

Make homemade spoiler blockers for Twitter

“Since I work in morning news radio, Twitter is an essential part of my job but it’s always littered with spoilers. On the Monday morning after the Battle of Winterfell, the entire Trending sidebar was a minefield. As soon as I saw the name ‘Arya’ pop up I tried to look away, but it’s just so tempting. Was she hurt? Did she die? What happened? Thankfully, I keep a pad of large sticky notes next to my computer. I grabbed a couple of those and stuck them on my screen over the Trending sidebar until I couldn’t see anything underneath and voila! Spoilers, be gone.

Luckily, many of the people I work with know the struggles of morning radio, so I don’t have to worry about spoilers being shouted in the hallways. Even if I did, there’s lots of soundproof booths to retreat to.” ― Shelby Knox

Stay up super late before work

Wake up super early before work

“My brother went to sleep at 6 p.m. so he could wake up at midnight and watch the movie at 1:45 a.m. The movie ended around 5 a.m., and then he went to have a real breakfast before work at 6:30 a.m. He went with our older brother, who finished his shift at 1 a.m. so they could go together. I don’t think I’ve ever seen much dedication from them before.” ― Mira Hernandez

“In Zambia ... you have to literally wake up at 3 in the morning to watch [‘Game of Thrones’] and then go back to bed, then wake up for work.” ― Situnjwani Kacholola Sokoni

Block out the spoilers with your voice

Install a satellite dish to watch on east coast time

“I moved from the east coast [to Los Angeles] years ago, but that meant that every post on my Facebook, Twitter, and even text message threads was coming from a world that was three hours ahead. I had to go into extreme social media blackout mode — just completely turn off all my connected devices — because everyone knew I was such a big fan that they immediately sent me their questions, even though I couldn’t watch it yet.

When I visited an office with satellite television service and I saw an HBO East feed, I decided to reverse-cut the cord. I was completely broke, had been borrowing streaming passwords from my parents, etc. I committed over $100 per month to have a satellite dish installed on the outside wall of my one-bedroom apartment, having to ask the building owner for special permission because it was not that kind of building. I had to promise to patch the holes when I took it out. And I had a 24-inch nonflat-screen TV.  No special or interesting setup. Was stealing Wi-Fi from a nearby coffee shop. But I had the entire HBO package.

This is now like six years later, but I actually still use this same method to get started with my work analyzing the episode at the earliest minute possible.”― Filup Molina of New Rockstars

The Royal Baby Announcement Included A Sweet Nod To Princess Diana

The British royal family grew by one on Monday with the arrival of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first child.

Buckingham Palace announced that the couple welcomed a baby boy weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces at 5:26 a.m. “Her Royal Highness and the baby are both doing well,” the statement read.

The palace’s announcement also included a subtle nod to Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. In keeping with past royal baby statements, the notice lists family members who “have been informed and are delighted with the news,” but it deviates from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s announcements by naming members of Diana’s family ― her sisters Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale and her brother Earl Spencer.

Harry has reportedly maintained a close relationship with his mother’s family, with Fellowes even giving a reading at his wedding last year.

“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle both feel honored that Lady Jane will be representing her family and helping to celebrate the memory of the late Princess on the wedding day,” read a palace statement in advance of the nuptials.

Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes and Earl Spencer at the opening of a fountain built in Diana's memory in London's Hyde Park in 2004.

The prince’s uncle, Earl Spencer, tweeted a message of congratulations to the new parents on Monday.

Royal watchers had guessed that Harry and Meghan would name their child Diana to honor the Princess of Wales, but the news that the baby is a boy has effectively shut down that theory. Still, many are putting their money on another Diana tribute name: Spencer.

It’ll likely be at least a few days before the palace announces the baby’s name, so for now, all we can do is speculate (and watch Harry’s adorable first interview since becoming a father).

Tormund Actor Kristofer Hivju Knows Brienne Made 'The Wrong Choice' On 'Game Of Thrones'

Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) has an origin story like no other, not to mention his jokes are second to none and he’s Jon Snow’s (Kit Harington) untouchable battle buddy. That alone ― plus his coiffed red mane ― makes him the perfect mate.

But in Season 8, Episode 4 of “Game of Thrones,” his love Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) made her choice and decided to bed Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), leaving Tormund heartbroken.

Hivju told HuffPost that although he knows Brienne and Jaime have history, he’s pretty disappointed for his main man.

“If I talk on Tormund’s behalf, I think she made the wrong choice,” the Norwegian actor said during a phone call on Monday.

Many fans probably feel that way after Jaime ― who spent many nights beside Brienne in Winterfell ― walks away from her toward the end of the episode. Once he hears Cersei (Lena Headey) killed Rhaegal and captured Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), the Lannister leaves a hysterical Ser Brienne to go back to his sister and former lover in King’s Landing.

“She’s hateful, and so am I,” Jaime tells Brienne after she begs him to stay.

Tormund, Hivju said, would “never.”

“He wants to make kids who can conquer the world,” he added.

Below, the actor talks about Brienne’s choice, Tormund and Jon’s goodbye and whether Ghost will be safe beyond the Wall.

You survived the Battle of Winterfell and got to party alongside your friends. Was it nice to have a lighthearted moment after the strenuous war scenes?

You know, every lighthearted moment in this show is a blessing. And we had a great party! [Laughs]

And you gave an epic speech about Jon being a king in many people’s eyes. It’s funny how everyone isn’t more interested in the fact that he rose from the dead, though?

In “Game of Thrones,” that’s just something that happens every day. [Laughs] No, no, no … I loved the scene when I read it the first time because Tormund and Jon have a long path together, and Tormund really respects and loves him. Even though they are very different human beings, they have experienced a lot together.

But Dany was definitely not happy about you bragging about Jon riding a dragon.

No. And that’s kind of the theme of the episode: When everything is done, Jon has steam fighting on the front row, pretty unselfishly as well. He’s a part of the army. He has always been on the front row.

And now it seems, because of his reputation and her recent heartbreak with the Jorah, Rhaegal and Missandei deaths, Dany might become the Mad Queen. What do you think of this theory?

What I think is fantastic about the show is how the characters always keep changing, like all human beings change. What we experience changes us. Like Jaime started out as a prick and now he’s a very sympathetic guy because life has hit him hard. And Daenerys has got some hard, hard experiences this episode, definitely.

You mentioned Jaime and now one thing comes to mind: You lost the love of your life to that guy! Talk about that.

It was horrible, horrible. Poor guy. The funny thing is, Tormund has shown her affection from the very beginning and she hasn’t shown it much back. But how the Free Folk live, that’s the way it is! If a woman shows you the shoulder, that means it’s a good sign. Cultural differences are what make the situation confused. So, for Tormund, they did it [fought the dead], they did it together, now time has come! But, you know, love is hard.

It really is. But as a fan of the show, are you happy Brienne ended up with Jaime?

If I speak on behalf of myself, they have a long history together and I always felt like she had liked him a lot. [Laughs] If I talk on Tormund’s behalf, I think she made the wrong choice.

Tormund moved on pretty quickly, though. He always said the northern women didn’t like him, but he seemed to be doing just fine.

Well, you know, it’s a way to drown your sorrows. [Laughs]

He started out as a pretty tough antagonist and suddenly became the symbol of love in the end.Kristofer Hivju on Tormund

I wonder if the giant’s milk speech maybe threw a wrench in your Brienne love plans?

No. Going back to the cultural differences, I think that speech was trying to put Jaime down to put himself up and that’s a very bad strategy, you know? It never works to put yourself up in that kind of way. Tormund thinks that pickup lines about having sex with bears are great, that probably worked perfectly in the past. But, no, it didn’t go the way he wanted [this time].

You must have so much fun reading the scripts each season because Tormund is such a great character and really adds a ton of the humor to the show.

[Laughs] Yeah, it’s been great to read every season and get laughter on great lines. Some lines you don’t even know are funny become funny. One of the things I love about Tormund is sometimes he’s funny because he wants to be and sometimes he’s funny and doesn’t know it. What’s the saying in English? He’s not aware that he’s funny! It’s just how he is and that makes him sweet.

Yes, he is sweet, which is why he would never leave Brienne in tears like Jaime did toward the end of the episode.

Never. Never. He wants to make kids who can conquer the world!

Yes, big, giant babies.

Wrong choice! Bad choice! But love isn’t about good choices every time.

Very true. Another big choice came for you and Jon, when you tell him you’re heading back north beyond the Wall, and he gives you Ghost. His precious boy!

[Laughs] Yeah.

A lot of people were sad we didn’t get more Ghost this season.

Well, you don’t know. Two more episodes to go! But, no, I think Jon is right that the south isn’t the place for a dire wolf. In Episode 2 [of the series] they killed one of them [Lady, Sansa’s dire wolf] — it’s a wild animal, it’s like a wolf plus two! I think it’s best for Ghost to go north.

I see a spinoff in your future. “Tormund & Ghost.”

[Laughs] Many people say that. Well, there’s still two more episodes to go. We don’t know if they survive.

It did feel like a goodbye to Tormund, at least in terms of you and Jon.

Well, we don’t know, maybe that was the last time we saw them … and Ghost.

In all seriousness, Jon wanted to go with you — he really did. He clearly doesn’t want to be king. Does that exchange foreshadow his path?

I think the reason Tormund didn’t join the battle or whatever is going to happen is it’s not his war. Tormund’s thing has always been to fight the dead — since he was a child he’s heard these stories. The Free Folk have always known the threat has been real and we encountered them for centuries, which is why they want to get through the Wall in the first place. So, Tormund’s arc and perspective has never been on the Iron Throne, his perspective was always to make the north livable and that’s difficult when you have the army of the dead around the corner. But, you know, I think Jon has moved on.

The Night King was defeated, and he’s been the true threat the whole series. What’s it like for Tormund to now be able to go back home and resume his regular life?

He can have a good night’s sleep for the first time in many years. You know, Mance Rayder [Ciarán Hinds] gathered all those beyond the Wall to fight the dead, and now they have. But it’s called “Game of Thrones,” it’s not called “Defeat of the Dead.” [Laughs]

That’s a great way to put it. You mention Mance Rayder, who was such an example for Jon on how to unite people and lead them. Do you agree?

I think Jon learned a lot from Mance Rayder, like Tormund also did. The only thing with Mance is that he refused to bend the knee. His pride went beyond his life, and Tormund says something about that. He should’ve bent that knee ... even though Tormund has never bent the knee, I’m just saying! Even though he’s followed Jon, he hasn’t bent the knee.

But Mance Rayder chose death instead of compromise with Stannis Baratheon — which maybe would’ve been a bad choice, but it ended up being us fighting on Jon’s side anyway because we had the same objective.

When you reminisce on Tormund’s storyline, does it make it hard to say goodbye to this character you’ve played for so many years?

It is, and in another way, I feel like I have given Tormund my everything. It’s been fantastic to play a character over six years where every season you get to do something new and gives Tormund a new color. He started out as a pretty tough antagonist and suddenly became the symbol of love in the end, and that’s a beautiful arc. I feel like many things I couldn’t imagine happening or many things I couldn’t imagine Tormund could feel have happened. So, that’s been a journey. It feels strange that this is over in a couple of weeks, and in another way, everyone has given their everything, and everything has to end. Eight years is a long run.

Machine Learning and the Labour Market: No Work and All Play?

$

Will artificial intelligence and machine learning lead to a huge loss in jobs, as the computers take over the tasks that keep so many Indians (and people around the world too) employed? Given the jobs crisis in India, this is a very important question, as if finding the balance between innovation and security.

The interplay between new technology and labour is as old as, well, technology and labour. The classic example of this is the impact of the steam engine on the labour market during the Industrial Revolution. During the Industrial Revolution machine power replaced muscle power and led to rapid increases in productivity of large enterprises, crushing out smaller firms. The Internet has had a similar effect — enabling large numbers of entrepreneurs while rendering many local businesses obsolete. Each technological revolution both replaces a large number of pre-existing jobs as well as enables new businesses that create new jobs. The expectation is that Artificial Intelligence will be no different. If the steam engine replaced muscle power, Artificial Intelligence is aimed at replacing brain power. The big question ahead of us is: will more jobs be created or destroyed by Artificial Intelligence (AI)  and Machine Learning (ML)?

We first need to recognize that digitalization and machine learning are two different, though related, technological changes. Digitalization has led to online platforms where employers and consumers can connect directly to the labour market. Take for instance Uber, Swiggy, BigBasket in the Indian context. These platforms have replaced local vendors on the one-hand but on the other, have enhanced efficiency of service and created a number of new jobs. They have also changed the nature of work, from full-time to on-demand. However, merely replacing the local with the online, has nothing to do with with ML and these jobs (lost or gained) do not fall into the accounting that we’re interested in.

For the latest elections news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

The destruction of jobs

For us to confidently point a finger towards ML, there has to be some “learning via algorithms” of a simple cognitive human task involved. Take for instance, the task of spotting an abnormality in a retina scan which may put a patient at risk of a serious eye condition. Previously this task required a trained human (an ophthalmologist), now such tasks are being increasingly taken over by machines. Another example: suppose you want to complain about a food order over a phone call, previously handling your calls was a task assigned to a human (a customer care executive), now you will likely end up “chatting” with a machine learning powered chatbot.

What makes ML a particularly efficient technology is that certain algorithms are becoming context-agnostic, meaning that some powerful algorithms perform very well across a wide variety of applications. For instance, the recent advancement in algorithms powered by Deep Learning and Neural Networks is being applied to fields as disparate as medicine and language processing. This makes the scale and scope of ML applications is unprecedented. Add to this the wealth of data being collected (due in large part to the digitalization of the economy) and growing computing power―and it’s no wonder that ML breakthroughs are occurring across fields at a furious pace. This explains why fears of job losses due to machine learning feel so real and urgent.

So will machine learning inevitably lead to the destruction of jobs that require simple cognitive ability? The answer is: to a large extent, yes. In fact multiple papers and reports have found that the greatest victims of ML related job losses are those who perform medium-skill and routine cognitive tasks, for example entry level accountants and customer service executives. In fact certain high-skill jobs requiring sophisticated pattern matching are under threat too. For instance, the National Health Service in UK is hoping to use AI tools to make up for the shortage of radiologists, which signals the loss of such jobs for humans in the longer run.

New kinds of work will emerge

What about the creation of new jobs directly because of ML? Here the answer is a bit mixed. Yes, there will be some new jobs created as a direct result of ML, but these may not be around for the long run. For instance, with algorithms replacing the job of a radiologist, automated medical diagnosis kits may proliferate to remote areas, where the patient would need a local individual who can explain the diagnosis to her. Another set of jobs being created by machine learning is that of the “annotator”. In order to produce accurate predictions, algorithms need large amounts of annotated or labelled data. An annotators job is to do just that ― label the data. This could be labelling whether a photograph has a car in it, whether a handwritten note contains the number 4 in it, whether an audio recording contains the word “hello”. These jobs are set to proliferate, especially in low wage economies like India, however they are ephemeral in nature and may very well be the storm before the lull, as far as the job market is concerned.

Does this mean that we are staring into a future with little or no work for humans? Economists in the US have recently started studying the impact of automation (including digitalization, artificial intelligence and machine learning) on the labour market. Not surprisingly, one set of high-demand roles would include individuals who are highly skilled in developing and using ML algorithms. However, their findings suggest that the most widespread jobs of the future will be those which require “human qualities”, something which machines are still a long way from acquiring. Some examples include tourism professionals, teachers and nurses. Personal care and creative arts are also domains where ML is not a direct competitor to humans, at least not yet.

The Indian labour market

Indian policy makers would be foolhardy to ignore the potential effects of ML on the labour market. Joblessness has emerged as a key concern among voters in the run up to the 2019 general elections, and addressing the opportunities, as well as threats that ML brings is sure to creep onto the next government’s agenda. On the upside, much of the job loss fear is driven by the countries at the forefront of R&D—that is to say, we don’t expect self-driving cars to replace human drivers anytime soon in India. Having said that, the shifting future jobscape is a good opportunity for the Indian government to invest in sectors like tourism and handicrafts — jobs in these sectors are unlikely to be affected by ML even in the long run. On the flip side, our education system is just not equipped for the eventual labour market changes. With routine tasks becoming the greatest casualty of the ML wave, training the next generation of the Indian workforce in soft and cognitive skills needs to become a policy priority.

Across the political spectrum in India (and in fact the world over), conversations around Universal Basic Income are gaining prominence. It is no coincidence that this is the era of successful scalable AI and ML models. As machines start replacing simple repetitive human tasks, we cannot ignore the very real possibility of a future with rampant joblessness. The idea of universal basic income gains credibility when looked at from the lens of tackling the extreme economic inequality that would ensue. In an ironic twist, it may be that a simple capitalistic idea — increasing productivity via machines, is likely to provide the best argument for a large scale socialistic redistribution system.
