NEW DELHI — Samajwadi Party member Azam Khan on Monday apologised in Lok Sabha for his sexist remarks against BJP’s Rama Devi.

Devi was officiating the House on Thursday last when Khan made the objectionable remarks against her sparking an uproar in the House.

As soon as Lok Sabha met after the weekend break, Speaker Om Birla allowed Khan to speak in the House.

“I have been an MLA for nine times, a minister several times, a Rajya Sabha member too. I was a Parliamentary Affairs Minister too. I know legislative procedures,” he said.

“However, if my words hurt anyone, I hereby apologise,” he said.

A some of his words were not audible, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said Khan should repeat the sentence again as the House could not comprehend what he actually said.

With this, SP president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who was sitting next to Khan, stood up to say that the Rampur MP had already apologised in the House in proper words and he can vouch for it.

Devi said Khan has the habit of uttering derogatory words against women and had done so on many occasions in the past outside the House. Now he has said them inside the House, she added.

After this, the Speaker asked Khan to tender the apology again.

Khan repeated the words and said Devi was like his sister.

“If my word hurts hurt anyone, I apologise,” he said.

Azam’s remarks to Devi during a discussion on the triple talaq bill were slammed by members as “double-meaning”, “malicious”, “utterly condemnable” and a “blot on all legislators”.

The speaker said members should be careful in uttering words and maintain decorum so that no such incident takes place in the future.

“This House belongs to all members. This can can be run only with the cooperation of members. The chair belongs to you all too and its dignity should be maintained. We all should be careful in uttering words and ensure that no such incident takes place in the future,” he said.

NEW DELHI — Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom claimed the gold medal without breaking a sweat in the 23rd President’s Cup, asserting her supremacy in a lop-sided 51kg bout final in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia on Sunday.

The Olympic bronze medallist pugilist decimated Australian April Franks 5-0.

The 36-year-old Indian had also won a gold medal at the India Open boxing tournament in May, but skipped the Asian Championships as part of a larger plan to enhance her chances of Olympic qualification.

The Asian Championship was held in Thailand in May.

Fresh from winning the gold at the India Open two months ago, Mary Kom participated in this prestigious tournament with the aim of testing herself and getting some much-needed bouts under the belt ahead of the World Championships.

Mary Kom, who claimed her sixth world title last year in Delhi, will be looking to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the World Championships in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

The 2019 World Boxing Championships for women will be held from September 7 to 21.

PS4 Slim 500GB Discontinued in India: Sources

It seems that Sony has discontinued the PS4 Slim 500GB console. While this variant of the wildly popular console still sells in parts of the world, retailers in India have been informed that they would no longer be getting stock of the PS4 Slim 500GB. Instead, they have been told to take larger quantities of the PS4 Slim 1TB.

Like most of the world, the PS4 is the market leader in India with Microsoft’s Xbox One family of consoles trailing behind by a considerable margin. So much so that some retailers in the country don’t even stock the Xbox One S or X. Nintendo is a non-entity outside parallel imports due to the company not having an Indian presence.

For the latest news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

The lack of a PS4 Slim 500GB variant has left game stores troubled as it was the most popular version of the PS4. This can be attributed to its relatively low MRP of Rs. 28,580, versus the PS4 Slim 1TB’s price of Rs. 33,650 and the PS4 Pro India price of Rs. 38,710. Sony has not replied to a request for comment at the time of writing. For their part, retailers have lamented the loss of a best seller.

“The 500GB PS4 Slim made up around 50 percent of our PS4 sales,” a Mumbai-based store owner told The Mako Reactor under the condition of anonymity. “Sony was pushing it aggressively through the year with good bundles and discounts. Discontinuing it is a problem because customers don’t find the new PS4 1TB options to have that much value.”

This lines up with what sources in the supply chain have told us in the past — the PS4 Slim 500GB variant has been the biggest seller in India followed by the PS4 Pro 1TB and then the PS4 Slim 1TB. The widely accepted install base for the PS4 in India is around 400,000 units. This includes grey market sales of the PS4 and PS4 Slim as well as the PS4 Pro sold via various channels (official or otherwise) sold till date, which has seen it surpass the PS3 with which only mustered 350,000 units in its lifetime.

With the biggest selling console out of the equation and supply of the PS4 Pro exceptionally irregular, Sony seems to be undermining its own position as market leader in a country that’s theirs for the taking.

Bear Grylls With Modi?! Twitter's Unimpressed.

A promotional video for a Discovery channel series featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent Twitter in a tizzy. Bear Grylls, the host of the show tweeted the video saying people would get to see “the unknown side” of the prime minister.

The tweet by Grylls said that this was to create awareness about wildlife and environment conservation.

The tweet saw hundreds of comments calling out Modi and pointing out that his government had taken steps that would harm the environment. Twitter users also wondered whether this was the show he was shooting for even after the Pulwama attack where 40 CRPF jawans were killed.

It will also be good to remember that the prime minister used the Pulwama incident and the Balakot air strike repeatedly during his campaign during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Here’s a look at what Twitter users said:

One user tweeted out a video of Modi responding to a student’s question of climate change. He he is heard telling the girl, “The climate has not changed, we have changed”.

Many others reminded Grylls of the 2002 Gujarat riots where hundreds of people were killed in a riot under Modi’s leadership.

Several other’s criticised Modi over Pulwama, not holding press conferences and India’s economy.

People Connected To Unnao Rape Survivor Keep Dying Under Suspicious Circumstances

The Unnao rape case took a new turn on Sunday when a truck whose number plates were covered in black paint rammed into a car in which the survivor, her mother, lawyer and other family members were traveling.

The incident has left the woman and her lawyer in critical condition and two women relatives dead. The family were on their way to Raebareli to meet the survivor’s uncle, who is serving a life term in a separate case.

The mother of the survivor has blamed four time-BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar, the accused in the case who has now been in jail for over a year, for the accident.

For the latest news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

NDTV quoted the mother as saying, “I have got to know that the lawmaker got it done. He is inside... he has a phone inside (the jail). He is doing everything sitting inside the jail,” the woman’s mother told reporters. “Sengar is in jail but his men aren’t. He and his men were threatening us... We want justice.”

The survivor has accused Sengar and his accomplices of raping her in 2017—she was a minor then—when she was taken to his home by a women on the pretext of getting her a job.

The family has alleged earlier that they had been threatened by Sengar and his brother to withdraw the case against them.

After news of Sunday’s accident was reported, many journalists and others pointed out a series of incidents that have occurred since the woman made her complaint that make the current development seem suspicious.

Though Sengar is in jail, he still holds huge clout in Unnao, and was even visited by BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj, after he won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

April 2018: Survivor’s father dies after being arrested and assaulted

The survivor’s father was falsely booked under the Arms Act and sent to jail on 5 April 2018, days after the family managed to get an FIR registered against Sengar. This was done only after the girl attempted self-immolation in front of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s house, demanding an FIR against the MLA.

On 9 April 2018, the father died in hospital, a week after he was attacked in jail, allegedly by accomplices of the MLA. A medical examination showed that he had been beaten.

Atul Sengar, the MLA’s brother, was arrested in the case a day after.

In July 2018, the CBI registered a case against Sengar and nine others, including Atul Sengar and three policemen, for falsely framing the survivor’s father.

August 2018: Key witness in father’s assault case dies

In August 2018, Yunus, a key witness in the assault case of the father died. The uncle of the girl had alleged foul play, saying that Yunus’ body was hurriedly buried without even an autopsy.

The police, however, claimed that the 30-year-old died of a liver illness.

December 2018: Survivor, mother charged

The survivor and mother were charged in December 2018 for reportedly forging her birth certificate to claim she was a minor. The FIR was filed after a petition from Haripal Singh, whose wife and son have also been accused in the rape case.

July 2019: Survivor’s uncle sentenced to 10 years in jail

The woman’s uncle was convicted in a 19-year-old case of attempt to murder and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. The case had been filed by was filed by Sengar’s brother, Atul Singh.

2017 and after: Harassment by cops

The girl had gone missing in June 2017, after which the family registered a missing complaint. After the woman was recovered and her statement was recorded in court, she had said the police had not let her name the MLA. She had also later alleged police harassment.

Reactions to Sunday’s incident

The opposition has lashed out at the ruling BJP in UP after Sunday’s incident.  Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said on Monday that the road accident was “shocking”. She also wondered whether any hope for justice can be expected from the ruling BJP, whose MLA Kuldeep Sengar is an accused in the case.

“The road accident involving the Unnao rape victim is shocking. Where has the CBI probe in this case reached?” she asked on Twitter. “Why is the accused MLA still in the BJP? Why is there laxity in the security of the victim and the witnesses?”

“Can you hope for any justice from the BJP government without an answer to these questions,” the Congress leader added.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that it could be a conspiracy to kill her and demanded a CBI probe into the incident. On the directives of Yadav, three SP MLCs went to the trauma centre and enquired about the condition of the rape survivor and her family, SP chief spokesperson Rajendra Chaudhary said.

“The accident involving the Unnao rape victim in Rae Bareli is a serious incident, and there could be possibility of murder behind this incident,” Yadav said in a statement issued here.

“This incident has links with a BJP MLA and there is BJP government in the state. There is ‘jungle raaj’ in the state. The criminals are roaming fearlessly. Only a CBI probe will solve this mystery,” he added.

There was also an uproar in Rajya Sabha over the incident.

What the police said

Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh called Sunday’s incident “purely an accident” and said that a fair probe would be carried out.

Singh said the truck’s driver and owner had been arrested.

Quoting eyewitnesses, Raebareli Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Singh said that an over-speeding truck hit the car carrying the rape survivor. “There were showers and the truck driver lost control over the vehicle which rammed into the car,” he said.

The truck driver had fled from the spot after the accident.

A Bigg Boss Contestant Bragged About Groping Women In Buses. The Audience Clapped And Laughed

Actor Saravanan, a contestant on the current season of Bigg Boss Tamil, bragged about groping women in public buses as a college kid, and the audience cheered on.

In a clip shared on Twitter, host Kamal Haasan is heard saying that nobody enters a bus with the purpose of molesting women and that everybody is in a hurry to get to work. According to the translations in The Hindu, Haasan then went on to say that there are some people who do board buses just to molest women.

To this, actor Saravanan, raised his hand and said he used to do it ‘all the time’ when he was in college. The camera then goes to the audience who’s heard cheering and clapping. Not the kind of response you’d imagine when an actor talks about being a creep.

Instead of shutting him down, Haasan replied to the comment saying, ”“Avar adhaiyum thandi punidham aayitaar,” which, according to The Hindu, translates to “He (Saravanan) has gone beyond all that and is now become pure and holy.”

Singer and dubbing artist Chinmayi Sripaada, who has been at the forefront of the #MeToo movement, called this out on Twitter.

This isn’t the first time when Bigg Boss Tamil has platformed and enabled such a behaviour.

In a previous episode, a female contestant Meera Mithun accused director Cheran of ‘manhandling’ her during a task.

In a subsequent episode, the clip of the task was aired to determine whether the harassment allegation was true. Yet again, Haasan brushed it aside, stating that such inadvertent pushes occur all the time.

Here’s what Chinmayi wrote, which sums up how deeply troubling the entire episode is.

Many users on Twitter called Haasan out:

Here's What We Know About How Plastic Is Impacting Our Health

$

Plastic is in absolutely everything to the point where we’re now living in the ‘plastic age’ (according to one scientist) and calculations suggest 8.3 billion tonnes of it have been created in the last 60 years. More than 70% of this is now in waste streams – mostly in landfill, but also polluting the ocean. It’s impacting wildlife populations, infiltrating the food we eat and the water we drink, and it could be harming our health.

While there’s been a lot of noise around the need to recycle more, use fewer carrier bags and ditch single-use products, not as much fuss has been made about the potential impact of everyday plastics on human health. And it seems our focus should be in this area as according to the wildlife charity WWF, we consume 11,000 tiny pieces of plastic every year around the world. This is the equivalent to ingesting an average of five grams of plastic – the weight of a credit card – every week.

For Dr Anna Watson, Head of Advocacy for the CHEM Trust, a charity working to protect humans and wildlife from harmful chemicals, it’s not the plastic itself that concerns her. “For me, one of the main concerns is that plastics contain hazardous chemicals,” she says. “They’re often added to the plastic for a certain reason, and we’re coming into contact with these chemicals in our everyday life through products that we have in our homes.”

The impact of plastics on health was the topic of discussion at a panel hosted by the Women’s Environmental Network (WEN) earlier this year. It was also the subject of a new and comprehensive report published in February titled Plastic & Health: the hidden costs of a plastic planet.

But the reality is that we don’t have a clear understanding of how plastic is affecting us. Emma Priestland, plastics campaigner for Friends of the Earth, tells HuffPost UK there are a lot of unknowns. “We do know that many types and uses of plastic have toxic additives, we just don’t know what the impact of that is,” she says. “There are also potential health issues at the very start of plastic’s life, as the extraction of the fossil fuels and production of plastic can release toxic chemicals and air pollution.”

Rolf Halden, associate professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering at Arizona State University, makes a valid point that plastic is so widespread now that it’s virtually impossible to find animal and human subjects who haven’t been exposed to plastic. So how then can you possibly compare results? In 2018, a study analysed faeces samples from participants across Finland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, the UK and Austria, and found every sample tested positive for the presence of microplastics – usually considered as debris with sizes below 5mm – and up to nine different types of plastic resins were detected.

There are two key areas to consider when it comes to assessing the possible impact of plastic on health: firstly, the effect of tiny plastic particles (micro-plastics and nano-plastics) which can enter the human body through a variety of different routes, and secondly, the impact of chemicals which are used in the process of making plastic products of which there are thousands, according to Dr Watson.

She is particularly concerned about the presence of two chemical groups found in plastics: bisphenols, a group of chemicals that include bisphenol A (BPA) used in water bottles, food packaging and other items; and phthalates, which are used to make plastics soft (think: PVC). Some past studies have suggested these chemicals disrupt the endocrine system, which is responsible for producing hormones which regulate all kinds of bodily processes including growth and development, sexual function, sleep, mood, reproduction and metabolism.

“A tiny amount of hormone can have a big impact on the body,” Dr Watson suggests, “and if you’ve got any chemical that’s disrupting that very sensitive system, it can have a big impact. They’ve been linked to hormone-related cancers, infertility and reproductive problems and heart disease.” Studies in animals showed they were also linked to developmental issues in the young.

These chemicals have been banned in some products because of the suspected impact on health, but not others. “Bisphenol A has been banned in feeding bottles for babies and some of the phthalates are banned in children’s toys – but you still find them in lots of other things that children might come into contact with,” Dr Watson explains. For example, they’re not banned from food packaging, she explains.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) deems that BPA is a safe chemical for use in production of plastics including refillable drinks bottles and food storage containers. “Scientists estimate how much of a chemical people can consume daily over their lifetime without being harmed by it,” reads the FSA website. “This is known as the chemical’s tolerable daily intake (TDI).”

BPA has a temporary tolerable daily intake set for it and the FSA suggests we currently consume less than the TDI for BPA from sources such as food containers. Scientists for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) are currently evaluating toxicological data on BPA, the results of which should be available in 2020.

The ‘Plastic & Health’ report agrees there is a “significant dearth of information” on the health impacts of toxic additives, and food packaging chemicals in particular. This is because only a handful of chemicals in use have gone through a health risk evaluation, the report says.

Dr Watson worries that a lot of people are exposed to harm without their knowledge or consent because chemicals in plastic and packaging do not appear on ingredient lists. She points out that a lot of the time we know a product is made from plastic, but not which chemicals have gone into the production of that plastic and whether they are hazardous or not.

She gives the example of a plastic toaster, where we don’t know which of 4,000 chemicals went into making it, and whether any of those chemicals are coming off onto our toast.

We’ve been trying to identify what hazardous chemicals are associated with plastic packaging and we found at least 148 particularly hazardous chemicals, either used in the process of making the plastic or in the end article,” says Dr Watson, “and 35 of those chemicals are known hormone-disrupting chemicals.”

How Does Plastic Get Into Our Bodies?

The exposure route often comes down to the fact we have plastic in our everyday lives. Dr Watson says some hazardous chemicals aren’t really fixed in the plastic and, as such, they can abrade off – “you can have them coming off things and collecting in dust in the house”.

It’s also possible for them to migrate from plastic food packaging into food, so you can be ingesting it. One study by researchers from the University of California suggested that dining out in restaurants and cafés, and consuming shop-bought sandwiches, were associated with higher phthalate levels in the body. An Italian study of school meals before and after the food was packaged found that average phthalate concentrations increased by more than 100% as a result of the packaging.

“There will also be chemicals coming through the waterway,” says Dr Watson, “but for most of us the exposure will be from living our everyday lives.”

Tiny plastics known as ‘microfibres’ have also been found by researchers in food and drink products such as mussels, table salt, honey and beer. They are released when clothes made from nylon, polyester or acrylic are washed, and the microfibres flow into rivers and oceans.

It’s clear there’s still very little known about plastic’s impact on health – it’s far more complex than you might think. So the general consensus is that it’s best to cut down on our plastic usage until we know more. “Because the majority of the world’s people are surrounded by plastic from the moment of birth it is hard to really understand the health impacts,” concludes Emma Priestland. “That’s one reason why we should take the precaution and start phasing out all but the most essential uses.”

5 Easy Swaps To Make

  1. Remove food from plastic containers and store them in glass containers instead.

  2. Switch your plastic water bottle for a reusable stainless steel one.

  3. Buy fruit and vegetables and take them home in a brown paper bag, rather than buying things from the supermarket that are ready-wrapped in plastic.

  4. For babies, use washable cloth nappies instead of disposable ones.

  5. Use washable cloths rather than face or baby wipes.

How To Take Care Of Yourself When Your Parent Is Dying

$

Losing a parent feels insurmountable at any age. Our series helps you face it ― from the practical logistics to the existential questions about death and dying today.

When a parent receives a terminal diagnosis, it can instantly sweep you into caretaking mode ― chauffeuring to doctor appointments, picking up medications, keeping a positive attitude, running errands and doing anything you can to keep your loved one comfortable.

But it’s important not to forget yourself in the process.

“When your family member is seriously ill, you may become so distracted by the intense process that you may forget to do simple things like eat healthy, go for a walk or get some sleep,” said VJ Periyakoil, director of palliative care education and training at Stanford Health Care in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Running yourself into a state of exhaustion will only keep you from fully being there for a parent who needs you ― and will jeopardize your own health. Brent T. Mausbach, a clinical psychologist at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health in La Jolla, California, said caregivers who neglect their own care “are at risk for depression, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases.”

But, realistically, how do you practice self-care when someone you love requires so much of your attention? Of course, they’re your priority, but spoiler alert: You can’t effectively help someone without helping yourself, too.

HuffPost spoke with medical professionals and those with experience as parent caretakers to get their tips on how to take care of your physical and mental health in the face of a parent’s terminal illness.

Read Up On The Condition

Daniel Vorobiof ― chief medical director ofBelong.Life, a social network for cancer patients, caregivers and health care professionals ― suggested learning all that you can about your parent’s medical condition.

“Being informed about different treatments available, and the possible side effects and benefits, will help support the patient to make the right decision,” he said.

When you know more about the disease, you will understand the possible physical and mental changes that could happen and manage them in a proactive way by giving the right advice, as well as consulting the right specialists, he added. This can help you to understand what may possibly happen and be better prepared mentally to tackle what’s to come.

Ask For Help

“Don’t try to do all care alone. No one can,” said Elizabeth Landsverk, founder of Elder Consult, a San Francisco-area geriatric care house-call practice.

Ask your parent’s doctors for recommendations on services you can put in place to help with things like running errands and providing rides to and from health appointments. Recruit family members or hire someone to be there to give care at night. If you can, look into a housekeeper or meal delivery service to take some tasks off your plate.

Susan Scatchell, a business development director in Deerfield, Illinois, who cared for her parents during their terminal illnesses, suggested keeping a note of tasks you’d be willing to delegate and dole them out if people offer. “Examples may be walking the dog, mowing the lawn, picking up kids or grandkids, sitting at the hospital and reading,” she said.

Talk It Out

Finding someone, like a therapist or spiritual leader, to speak to openly and honestly about what you are feeling can help you process emotions.

“Death means different things to different people, and it is important to find someone you can lean on for support,” said Jodie Robison, the executive director for military services atCenterstone, a multi-state behavioral health care organization.

Looking for outside support from others who are or have been in your situation can be beneficial, said Michelle Braley, clinical manager atThe Learning Corp, a mobile therapy app used to treat speech, language and cognitive disorders.

“Beyond offering sympathy and encouragement, live or online support groups can help family caregivers feel validated and less alone as members bond through shared experience,” Braley said.

Inform Your Boss

Many adult children feel pressure from their employers that keeps them from asking for time off to deal with a parent’s illness. Jisella Doan, global advocacy officer forHome Instead Senior Care in Omaha, recommended talking to your boss about what would be most beneficial in your situation, “whether it be flexible hours, additional support from co-workers, or access to resources such as employee assistance programs,” Doan said.

“Securing the right work/life balance can make an enormous difference in your mental health and ability to truly care for your loved one,” she added.

Sneak In Small Activities That Delight You

“Doing things that you enjoy and find restorative is very important,” said Jephtha Tausig, a licensed psychologist in New York City.

Sneak in some reading in the hospital waiting room or before bed to unwind. Watch a funny movie to lift yourself up. Call up a good friend. Tausig added that simple walks to decompress and gather your thoughts are also good options for weaving in some “you time.”

Move Your Body When You Can

“Grief, even the anticipatory grief of a parent who’s still alive, is an energy that needs to move,” saidShelby Forsythia, the podcast host of ”Coming Back: Conversations on Life After Loss.”

She shared that when her mother was dying of cancer, she found reprieve in a daily run. “Cranking my music and running, even for 10 minutes, was a release I intuitively reached for in my anticipation of her death,” Forsythia said.

Karen Selby, a patient advocate at The Mesothelioma Centersaid that “if you find yourself sitting for extended periods of time, set an alarm to remind yourself to stand and move around every hour.”

Don’t have time to hit the gym? Try going for a walk through the hospital hallways, stepping outside for fresh air or using the stairs instead of the elevator. Moving your body, even if it’s just for a bit, can elevate your mood.

Prioritize Sleep

Julie Smith, a physical therapist and integrative nutrition health coach in St. Louis, found that getting enough sleep was key to staying energized when her mother was battling Stage 4 melanoma.

“Adequate sleep is necessary for brain function but also plays a huge role in our emotional and physical health as well,” she said.

Smith suggested going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. And try some deep breathing before you hit the sheets, a technique that Smith said helped to ease her mind enough to drift off.

Try Not To Get Hung Up On Family Arguments

Garland Walton, a nonprofit consultant in Nice, France, helped to care for his mother during her final stages of life. He said that during this time, the family dynamics got the best of him.

“My sister and I said and did hurtful things. Some I let go, and some I didn’t, but I learned that those episodes produced nothing good, and every fight or tense discussion was an unnecessary expenditure of energy I should’ve been putting toward my mom,” he said.

He suggested doing your best to put aside family differences while in caretaking mode so you can focus your energy on your parent in need.

Maintain Healthful Eating Habits When You Can

Ensuring that you are loading yourself up with proper nutrients can go a long way, according to Wendy Kaplan, a registered dietitian nutritionist. Kaplan suggested keeping healthful snacks on hand to avoid relying on vending machines. She also recommended keeping your fridge stocked with pre-washed and cut fruits and vegetables and carrying portable single-serving snacks, such as hummus and carrots, trail mix, and guacamole and whole grain chips. And don’t forget to stay hydrated.

Consider A Little Pet Therapy

“Studies have shown that socializing with pets can increase serotonin and dopamine levels, which lower depression rates and help people relax after a stressful day,” Nalin said. So after a particularly taxing day, it can be a great self-care practice to cuddle up with your favorite fur baby and let the stress melt away.

Dress For Comfort

Sitting in waiting rooms is already difficult enough.

“Never wear anything hard to get into or out of, never wear uncomfortable shoes or clothing,” said Bonnie B. Matheson, an author in Washington, D.C., who is caring for her 101-year-old mother.

Another tip she’s found to be helpful is to wear athleisure wear around the hospital “so that you can go to an exercise class” if you get an hour or so to sneak away.

Remind Yourself To Let Go Of Guilt

You deserve care ― and you shouldn’t shame yourself for needing it.

“If your parent is in the hospital very ill, you may feel guilty to do anything other than sit by their side, so compulsively you will stay with them to avoid the burden of your guilt,” saidStephanie Wijkstrom, founder and psychotherapist at The Counseling and Wellness Center of Pittsburgh.

She noted, however, that the issue with this kind of irrational guilt is that nothing you do will ever be enough to stop it from affecting you. “You must label your feeling as irrational guilt and accept your need for some balance and self-care in the rush of your parent’s illness,” she said.

On July 29, we cross an alarming threshold. This date marks Earth Overshoot Day, the point each year at which humanity starts to consume the world’s natural resources faster than they can be replenished.

It’s taken us only 209 days to burn through a year’s worth of resources — everything from food and timber to land and carbon. We are using up nature 1.75 times faster than they can be replenished. To do this sustainably, we would need the resources of 1.75 Earths.

These latest figures come from Global Footprint Network, an international nonprofit that calculates our annual ecological budget and the date at which we exceed it. Once we bust through this budget, we start devouring resources at an unsustainable rate.

“It’s a pyramid scheme,” said Mathis Wackernagel, CEO and founder of Global Footprint Network. “It depends on using more and more from the future to pay for the present.”

It’s like being in financial debt, only much harder to recover. “There’s nothing to kickstart the economy if we overuse our resources,” he said, “because every economic activity depends on natural capital, and without that, it’s not going to work.”

The burden of this ecological debt is getting heavier. We started overconsuming resources back in the 1970s, and since then it’s gotten progressively worse. Over the last 20 years, Earth Overshoot Day has crept forward by more than two months. And this year, it falls on the earliest date yet.

“It’s a pyramid scheme,” Mathis Wackernagel, founder of Global Footprint Network, said of humans' overconsumption of Earth's resources. “It depends on using more and more from the future to pay for the present.”

Forests are being felled at an alarming rate to provide timber and clear land for agriculture — two football fields’ worth of Amazon rainforest were cleared every minute in May. We are overexploiting water resources for industry and agriculture, and to provide drinking water for ever-expanding cities. And our addiction to fossil fuels means we are producing carbon emissions at levels that will push us further into dangerous temperature rises.

As with financial debt, we can only avoid the consequences for so long. The impact is already becoming frighteningly clear. Wildfires are becoming more frequent and more destructive. Cities around the world, from Cape Town to Chennai, are running out of water supplies, and a landmark U.N. biodiversity report published in May said up to 1 million species could go extinct thanks to human actions.

While the consequences are likely to affect poorer nations more starkly, it’s the populations of richer nations that live further beyond their means, according to the Global Footprint Network. If everyone lived like people in the United States, for example, we would need five Earths. If we all consumed resources at the same rate as people in India, we would only need seven-tenths of a planet to meet our demands.

Global Footprint Network has launched a campaign to ensure we can live within the resources of one Earth by 2050.

It’s an untenable situation, and one that will not continue indefinitely, Wackernagel said. Whether it stops through disaster or by design is up to us.

Wackernagel blames the current inaction on the failure of politicians and economists to understand that the economy depends on, and is inextricably linked to, natural resources. Instead, the tendency is to treat environmental considerations as secondary, rather than fundamental to the economy’s ability to survive. But the costs of ignoring them will be huge, he said.

“So as long as, for example in the United States, the Trump government doesn’t think climate action is a great investment for the United States, they will do anything they can to avoid the topic,” he said.

Global Footprint Network has launched a campaign to end Earth Overshoot Day for good, aiming to conserve enough resources to move the date later by five days each year — so that by 2050, we can live within the resources of one Earth.

The organization has identified several areas in which we can reduce consumption: more efficient and low-carbon city design; moving away from fossil fuels, which make up the biggest share of our overall footprint; fixing the broken food system; and protecting nature through regenerative agriculture and large-scale conservation.

Overpopulation is also a key pressure point, Wackernagel said, adding that one of the best solutions is to provide women and girls with the same educational and economic opportunities offered to men.

“It’s not about sacrifice,” Wackernagel said. “It’s all about investing in a future where our next generation, our children, can thrive. There are tons of solutions possible with very high impact. Again, the question is, do we want them?”

Meghan Markle has guest edited the September Issue of British Vogue, choosing to celebrate 15 women who are “trailblazing change-makers, united by their fearlessness in breaking barriers”.

The Duchess, who has been working on the project for the past seven months with editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, said she hopes readers feel as inspired by the magazine as she does.

The cover features a mix of campaigning actors, models, a dancer, an author and a prime minister. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Adwoa Aboah

The 27-year-old British model is no stranger to a front cover – she starred on the first British Vogue of Enningful’s tenure – but she is also a mental health campaigner through her Gurls Talk platform. Aboah has collaborated with the makers of Barbie, and a doll in her likeness was released for International Women’s Day. She has also supported campaigns calling for an end to period poverty.

Adut Akech

The South Sudanese model was born during a journey to the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya before emigrating to Australia with her family. She has appeared in campaigns for Fendi, Moschino, Saint Laurent, Valentino, Versace. The 19-year-old works with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in order to promote causes that support refugees around the world.

Ramla Ali

Born in Mogadishu some time in the early 1990s, the Somali boxer, who moved to the UK as a refugee, does not know exactly how old she is, according to the Guardian. She started boxing as a teenager as is now the current African Zone Featherweight Champion, competing for Somalia in the Women’s World Championships in 2018.

Jacinda Ardern

New Zealand’s prime minister became the second elected leader in modern history to give birth while in office, after having her daughter Neve in June 2018. Ardern, 39, was praised internationally for her compassionate handling of the 15 March terror attack in Christchurch, where a gunman killed 51 worshippers at two mosques.

In a video for the Vogue cover, she said: “One change I’ve noticed over the course of my career, is just how polarised the world is now. I do think there is a solution to that though, and that’s ultimately us coming back to the humanity that we all share.”

Sinéad Burke

An academic and diversity advocate, the 29-year-old was named as part of The Vogue 25 – the first Vogue guide to Britain’s 25 most influential and aspirational figures in 2018. She has more than 24,000 Twitter followers, almost 90,000 Instagram followers and hosts a podcast called As Me With Sinéad.

Gemma Chan

The actor and campaigner, 36, starred in box office hit Crazy Rich Asians, and is also known for her role in Channel 4 drama Humans. She said she hoped the success of Crazy Rich Asians, which was the first Hollywood film in 25 years with a majority Asian-American cast, would counteract some of the defences used after a number of “white washing” casting controversies. This year, she starred as Minn-Erva in Captain Marvel.

Laverne Cox

The 47-year-old trans actor and LGBTQ advocate rose to prominence with her role on Orange Is The New Black. With a whopping 3.7 million followers on Instagram, her bio proudly states “#TransIsBeautiful”. You may also recognise Cox as one of the faces of Beyonce’s clothing line Ivy Park.

Jane Fonda

The 81-year-old actor is known for her work as a writer, political activist, fitness guru and fashion model, and has seen a career resurgence after starring in Netflix’s original series Grace And Frankie. The Oscar-winning star is an outspoken supporter of the #MeToo movement and co-founded the Women’s Media Center, an organisation providing advocacy for women in the media.

Salma Hayek Pinault

A Hollywood star and women’s rights advocate, Salma Hayek Pinault, 52, has had leading roles in films including Frida, a biography of artist Frida Kahlo. In December 2017, she alleged years of harassment from producer Harvey Weinstein, whom she called a “monster”. Weinstein denied the allegations.

Jameela Jamil

The Good Place actor and advocate for body positivity rose to fame as a presenter on T4. She was among many stars to speak out after Alabama voted for a near-total ban on abortion, calling it “truly disgusting”. Jamil, 33, has also spoken out about airbrushing in the media and has criticised stars for promoting diet products online.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

The 41-year-old award-winning novelist was born in Nigeria. She is the author of Purple Hibiscus, Half Of A Yellow Sun, and Americanah, and the essay, We Should All Be Feminists. Her work has been translated into more than 30 languages and she interviewed Michelle Obama on stage at Southbank Centre.

Francesca Hayward

Kenyan-born, British-raised Royal Ballet principal dancer Francesca Hayward, 27, has performed a number of major roles for the company, including Clara in The Nutcracker, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty and the title role in Giselle. She is also among the cast of the new Cats film.

Yara Shahidi

The 19-year-old actor and activist founded Eighteen x 18, a creative platform to engage her generation to “speak our truth, get active and vote!” She has almost 400,000 followers on Twitter.

Greta Thunberg

A student activist from Sweden, 16-year-old Thunberg was the schoolgirl behind a global wave of youth climate change protests. The teenager won worldwide fame after beginning a solitary School Strike For The Climate protest outside the Swedish Parliament in August 2018. She inspired school walkouts around the world, with hundreds of thousands of young people in countries including the UK joining the Global Climate Strike in March. She also lends her voice for a climate change message on the latest track by the 1975.

Christy Turlington Burns

The 50-year-old supermodel is the founder of Every Mother Counts. The charity says almost all maternal deaths can be prevented by ensuring that women have access to quality maternity care. The model said she founded the charity “to raise awareness about a global tragedy that many women face — but not enough are aware of until it is too late”.

John Oliver Explains Exactly Why Boris Johnson Is Not Donald Trump

John Oliver compared British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to President Donald Trump with a quote from Trump himself on Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight.” (See the full segment below.)

The British host showed a clip of Trump bragging that Johnson has become known as “Britain Trump,” which means the British “like me over there,” Trump said.

Incorrect on both counts, Oliver emphasized: “No one ever says ‘Britain Trump,’ unless it it’s in the context of a sentence like, ’I’m getting the fuck out of Britain. Trump is coming to visit this weekend.’”

Oliver later got down to what separates the two after the obvious similarity of being a “clownish figure with silly hair and a passing relationship with the truth.”

Johnson is far more complex, and is extremely calculating in presenting himself as “a lovable mess weathering adversity with humor and good cheer,” according to Oliver. His bumbling ways can fool citizens into believing he is prepared on certain issues, when he is actually not.

“Can you imagine Trump having that level of self-reflection?” Oliver asked before slipping into Trump’s persona. Referring to one of Trump’s Twitter gaffes, Oliver, as Trump, said: “With covfefe the tactic was to present myself as a kind of sub-literate clown to distract you from the fact I’m a mound of skin totally stretched across the chasm where a soul should be.”

Boris Johnson's Girlfriend Carrie Symonds WILL Move Into Downing Street

Boris Johnson is officially moving into Downing Street on Monday and will be joined by his partner Carrie Symonds.

Their move into the larger four bedroom flat in Number 11 occupied by UK prime ministers since Tony Blair will cost the taxpayer nothing, a Downing Street spokesperson said.

They refused to comment on whether Johnson’s children from previous relationships would receive any taxpayer-funded protection and said they were “not aware of any plans” for any of them to move into Downing Street.

The spokesperson was unable to say whether Symonds, 31, would accompany 55 year-old Johnson on the PM’s annual trip to Balmoral in Scotland to visit the Queen.

“The PM is officially moving in today and yes his partner will be living there,” the spokesperson told Westminster reporters.

“In relation to her living at (Downing Street) there won’t be any additional cost to the taxpayer.”

Symonds used to be the Conservative party's director of communications

During the Tory leadership campaign, Johnson refused to answer questions about a loud row he had with Symonds, south London, which prompted neighbours to call the police to her London .

The Guardian newspaper said it had heard a recording of the incident in which Johnson could allegedly be heard saying “get off my f****** laptop” before a loud crashing noise.

At one point Symonds was heard telling Johnson to “get off me” and “get out of my flat”, the newspaper reported, while other neighbours said they heard screaming and banging coming from the property.

Johnson refused to discuss the row when asked about it in the leadership campaign, saying he has a rule not to involve his loved ones in his public life.

Symonds, the Tories’ former director of communications, stood with Number 10 staff as Johnson made his first speech to the nation as PM from Downing Street last week.

Murder Charges Against BJP MLA After Unnao Rape Survivor's Accident

UNNAO/LUCKNOW — Swinging into action amid strident demands from Opposition for an inquiry into the road accident in which the Unnao rape survivor and her lawyer received grievous injuries, the Uttar Pradesh Police on Monday named the accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar among ten people in the FIR in the case, charging them with murder.

A car in which the 19-year old woman, her family and lawyer were travelling was hit by an overspeeding truck in Rae Bareli on Sunday, killing two members and leaving her and the advocate critically injured.

Sengar, a four-time MLA who represents Bangermau in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, is an accused in the rape case and was arrested on 13 April last year.

The incident found its echo in Parliament with SP member Ram Gopal Yadav on Monday alleging an attempt was made to “kill” the rape survivor, leading to brief adjournment of Rajya Sabha.

For the latest news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

Yadav said the security personnel provided to her was not with the survivor at the time of the accident and registration plate of the truck involved was covered with grease.

“FIR has been registered under the Indian Penal Code’s sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 506 (criminal intimidation), 120b (criminal conspiracy) against 10 named persons, including the BJP MLA, and 15-20 others,” a police officer said.

It was registered at the Gurbuxganj police station in Raebareli, police said.

The case was registered on a complaint from the rape survivor’s uncle Mahesh Singh, who is lodged in the Raebareli jail, police said.

He alleged that the MLA got the car hit on Sunday. “I am sure that the car was hit for killing all of them by the BJP MLA and his men,” Singh said in his complaint.

The mother of the survivor, speaking to reporters in Unnao had alleged: “It was not an accident but a conspiracy to eliminate all of us.

The Uttar Pradesh government is ready for a CBI probe into the accident involving the Unnao rape survivor, if a request is made, Director General of Police OP Singh said.

“The truck was over-speeding and it was raining also. Prima facie, appears to be an accident, but a detailed unbiased probe is on in the matter,” Singh told reporters in Lucknow.

“The state government is ready for recommending a CBI probe into the Sunday’s mishap in Rae Bareli if the victim’s mother or any relative makes any request in this regard,” Singh said.

Tagging a media report on the accident, Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi tweeted:” “Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao. A new special education bulletin for Indian women. Don’t ask questions if a BJP MLA is accused of having raped you.”

While, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the incident as shocking, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav sought a CBI probe.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Commission For Women chief Swati Maliwal met the Unnao rape survivor at a Lucknow hospital and said she should be airlifted to Delhi for better treatment as she is “critical”.

in a tweet, BSP supremo Mayawati said: “Her (the rape survivor’s) maternal and paternal aunts were killed and she herself and her advocate are seriously injured. The Supreme Court need to take cognizance of the matter and ensure strict action.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form a high-level inquiry committee to probe the survivor’s accident, while her Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal described it as a “pre-planned conspiracy” and that the incident is a “mockery of the law”.

Unnao Superintendent of Police MP Verma said that one gunner and two women constables have been assigned round-the-clock duty for the safety of the survivor and her family, but they were not present at the time of the accident.

“An inquiry has been ordered to look into the reasons as to why the security personnel were not present with her and action will be taken after getting a report,” Verma said.

A police team that rushed to the spot in Rae Bareli after the accident found that the truck’s registration plate scrubbed and painted black, but they could retrieve the registration number, a police official said.

The truck has a Fatehpur district registration plate, Lucknow Zone ADG Rajeev Krishna said. When asked if the registration plate was tampered with, Krishna said it will be sent for forensic checks to ascertain the facts.

Teams from Lucknow have reached Rae Bareli for investigation.

How This Fake Financial Expert Tricked Outlets Into Publishing Her Advice

Patricia Russell seemed to appear out of nowhere. A certified financial planner and graduate of several prestigious colleges, Russell has recently been quoted in major publications such as Newsday, MarketWatch, Consumer ReportsBusiness Insider and U.S. News, as well as sites that recirculate content on MSN and other websites. She has also written columns for personal finance blogs, including Moolanomy and Think Save Retire.

The only problem? She’s not a real person.

Who Is Patricia Russell, CFP?

Fellow personal finance writer Elizabeth Aldrich initially tipped me off that something wasn’t right with Russell. We both on occasion use a service called Help a Reporter Out, or HARO, to find experts for our stories. However, we both lamented that many of the so-called experts who respond to our queries stretched the truth when it came to their expertise. HARO didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about how sources are vetted, though its rules state that media professionals are encouraged to perform additional due diligence.

Aldrich said she had received many HARO responses from Russell lately. The first time Russell reached out, Aldrich was interested in featuring her in an article. However, Aldrich couldn’t find any online presence for Russell aside from Russell’s website, FinanceMarvel, where she claims to be a certified financial planner. “I emailed her asking for a LinkedIn page, and she said she had zero social media profiles,” Aldrich said. “But while I was waiting for her to respond, I reverse-Google-image-searched her photo to see if I could find her profile on my own, and it’s a stock photo.”

Indeed, an image search on Google turns up many hits for the samestock photo Russell uses for herself (stock photos typically feature models and are available for licensing).

“Now she has a LinkedIn [profile], which she created right after I told her I couldn’t use her responses,” Aldrich added.

It turns out Russell had connected with me on LinkedIn not long ago. And it’s an impressive profile. In addition to being credentialed as a CFP, she lists an accounting and finance degree from MIT and another in business administration and management from the University of Oxford.

Patricia Russell's LinkedIn profile, complete with a stock photo (but not the Yale experience she claims on her bio).

Russell had also emailed me several times about various stories I was working on, wanting to share her expertise. She had thoughts on everything from the best time to buy a car to how the dark web works. What a breadth of knowledge for someone who specializes in financial planning.

It wasn’t difficult to verify whether Russell’s claims about her expertise were true, yet it appeared no one had bothered. A quick search on the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards’ database of registered CFPs did not turn up anyone named Patricia Russell. Dan Drummond, director of communications for the CFP Board, confirmed there is no CFP named Patricia Russell. Drummond is currently investigating the situation.

Giving her the benefit of the doubt, I emailed Russell and asked if she was perhaps certified under a slightly different name. She told me that yes, in fact, she recently got married and her details hadn’t been amended yet. She directed me to a webpage that lists all her media mentions.

At this point, my BS meter was on high alert. Hoping to coax more information from her, I played along and asked for her maiden name ― the one she earned her CFP credential under.

In order to spare the real-life woman with the name Russell gave me, I won’t disclose it here. But it was clear that she simply picked a person named Patricia from the CFP Board’s list and hoped I would believe it was her, despite none of the relevant personal details lining up.

Next, I contacted the registrar’s office at MIT to verify whether there was a record of Russell attending. A representative explained that the office can’t definitively confirm that a person did not attend MIT, as there can be situations where someone enrolled under a different name, participated in a special program, etc., but they did confirm that there was no record of an individual with either name I was provided. The University of Oxford did not respond to requests for comment.

Russell’s story broke down further on FinanceMarvel’s “About” page. There, according to our screenshots, she claimed to be a single woman in her early 30s working to be mortgage-free by age 40. It said she was a graduate of Yale’s School of Management.

A section of FinanceMarvel's

“I will share my knowledge and teach you how to repair and improve your credit score, how to become debt-free, how to save more money and how to generate a passive income,” she wrote.

The years of expertise in finance she listed in her bio fluctuated between 10 and 25, and she claimed her FICO score “has been well above 800 every year for the last 20 years,” despite the fact that she could only have been an adult for a maximum of about 17 years.

“I spent 25 years researching, testing, and proving these methods ― they work,” she wrote, after introducing herself as a person in her early 30s with a decade of experience.

After I presented my findings to Russell and repeatedly pressed her to reveal her true identity, she continued to refuse. She said that she is using a pseudonym to protect her privacy and avoid identity theft, and has since updated her “about” page to acknowledge her name isn’t real.

“Whilst I do have relevant credentials to my real name I have decided it was in my best interest to remove them in order to avoid any misunderstandings,” she states on the page.

However, it’s clear that more than just her name was misleading, as she deleted the entire lengthy story describing her journey to becoming a financial expert and replaced it with the disclaimer.

FinanceMarvel heavily promotes credit repair companies.

Many of the posts on the FinanceMarvel blog promote various credit repair companies. Presumably, these are affiliate partnerships (a common way for bloggers to make money) in which Russell is paid every time someone clicks a link or signs up for services through one of the companies mentioned. In one blog post, she wrote with delightful irony, “I’ve seen my fair share of fly-by-night companies come and go and know how to spot a scam when I see one. Unfortunately, the industry is still rife with credit repair scammers preying on those individuals who are desperately seeking help to repair their credit rating.”

It’s not possible to see who the owner of FinanceMarvel.com is, as its site owner information is protected by a paid service that keeps it hidden. However, by performing a reverse IP lookup, I can see all of the websites that are hosted on the same server as FinanceMarvel.com. There are a number of other finance sites, many related to debt relief and credit repair, including:

  • Aaadebtconsolidationloan.com

  • Arizonadebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Californiadebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Call4debtrelief.com

  • Creditrepairexpert.org

  • Floridadebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Freedebtmanagementtips.com

  • Helpwithdebtsettlement.com

  • Helpwithmycreditcarddebt.com

  • Howtodebtnegotiation.com

  • Howtodebtsettlement.com

  • Illinoisdebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Nationaldebtreliefaffiliates.com

  • Nationaldebtreliefreviews.com

  • Newyorkdebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Nocreditcardbills.com

  • Pennsylvaniadebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Stopdebt.org

  • Texascreditcarddebt.com

  • Texasdebtconsolidationquote.com

  • Texaspersonalloans.org

What many of these sites have in common (in addition to the same server, spammy design and low-quality financial advice) is that they reference the company National Debt Relief via advertisements and affiliate links. A few also have the owner information listed publicly. Adam Tijerina, marketing manager for National Debt Relief, is listed as the owner of several of the websites on the server, including stopdebt.org and texaspersonalloans.org.

According to Tijerina, there is no connection between his websites and FinanceMarvel. When contacted to inquire whether he or any of his colleagues know who owns the site FinanceMarvel, Tijerina looked up the information on the website’s contact page and responded, “As far as I know, we are not working with Patricia and FinanceMarvel.com.” In response to a follow-up question, he noted that any website he is personally affiliated with will mention National Debt Relief (Russell’s does not) and he is not writing under the pen name of Patricia Russell.

“Russell” Caught Red-Handed

Though we still have no idea who is really behind the Patricia Russell persona, the fact that they’ve quickly scrubbed their online presence of the personal details outlined above indicates they have more than their name to hide.

If only this were a case of a bumbling, non-tech-savvy financial professional who innocently used a pen name. The fact that Russell used the CFP registered trademark with a fake name, lied to me about her maiden name so I would think she was another person, fabricated her educational background and represented herself to the media as an expert under a false identity without disclosing it suggests that deception was always the intent. If Russell is, in fact, a CFP, she didn’t just violate the board’s code of ethics, she drove a Mack truck right through it, or at least the parts that state CFPs must “act with honesty, integrity, competence, and diligence,” “avoid or disclose and manage conflicts of interest,” and so forth.

Russell informed me that she’s contacted her lawyer about potential issues with using a pen name and said that, due to the “ethically grey area” of associating her CFP credentials with it, has decided to change her title. Russell, whoever she ― or he, or they ― really is, is now listed as the editor of FinanceMarvel on her website, social media profiles and email signature. The education and credentials sections of her LinkedIn profile have been deleted as well.

Another Drew Cloud, Except Way Worse

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. In 2018, an investigation by two reporters at the Chronicle of Higher Education revealed that Drew Cloud, a well-known and frequently quoted student loan expert who wrote for a website called Student Loan Report, was actually a fictional person fabricated by financial services marketplace LendEDU.

“Drew Cloud is a pseudonym that a diverse group of authors at Student Loan Report, LLC use to share experiences and information related to the challenges college students face with funding their education,” Nate Matherson, CEO of LendEDU, told the Chronicle.

The situation was undoubtedly embarrassing for all the reporters and media outlets that developed a relationship with this nonexistent source and quoted his research and expertise in their articles. But to me, the case of Patricia Russell is much more alarming.

Unlike Drew Cloud, who was passed off as an everyday guy who happened to know a lot about student loans, Patricia Russell has been falsely representing herself to the media using the CFP registered trademark, claiming a certification that’s incredibly difficult to achieve and implies the highest standards are being met when it comes to education, experience and ethics. And it took all of five minutes to discover that Russell was not who she said she was.

Unfortunately, growing competition for clicks and a rapidly moving news cycle mean writers or reporters aren’t always performing their due diligence when it comes to verifying information. That leaves an opportunity open for people like Patricia Russell, Drew Cloud and who knows how many other false identities to weasel their way into our trust. It’s our responsibility ― now more than ever ― to safeguard readers from false information and uphold the highest standards possible.

It also goes to show how pervasive pseudo-journalism is within the personal finance industry. Websites are often used to take advantage of consumers who are looking for help and to disguise marketers as sources of unbiased financial advice. Not all sites that engage in affiliate marketing are bad, by any means, but it’s important to know exactly where financial advice and recommendations are coming from so you can make an informed decision with your money.

A legitimate financial professional without ulterior motives has no reason to hide their true identity. So take such financial advice with a grain of salt, and take extra steps to verify the background of an “expert” if something doesn’t seem right.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Praises Boris Johnson, Deletes It And Backtracks 15 Minutes Later

There are few things we love more than when the worlds of politics and entertainment collide, which is exactly what has happened this morning – and it’s all thanks to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson

The wrestler-turned-actor was appearing on Good Morning Britain to discuss the latest Fast And Furious film when – because of his surname – he was asked about Boris Johnson becoming the new prime minister. A tenuous link if we’ve ever seen one.

Dwayne and Boris (who aren't actually related, OK?)

“He’s family, by the way; you don’t know that, but now all of Britain knows … he’s my cousin,” Dwayne jokily replied. “It’s like looking in the mirror, every time I see Boris.”

He then tweeted the gag too, writing: “Breaking: PM Boris Johnson is in fact my cousin (though we clearly look more like twins).

“Jokes aside, PM did say something in his speech I liked – ‘the people are our bosses’.

“100% agree. The people/audience/consumer will always matter most. #ourboss.”

At this point, it’s fair to say The Rock’s mentions blew up but sadly, we can’t check the replies as he deleted his tweet within 15 minutes.

The actor then sent an update in which he distanced himself from the new PM.

“Well according to the people, maybe we’re not related after all,” he wrote, before a laughing face emoji.

Using a Hawaiian expression of gratitude, The Rock continued: “Big mahalo to my people who I can always rely on to give me the real talk and swift perspective & education on the individual I did not know. Tequila on me, Britain.”

The latest Fast And Furious film, Hobbs & Shaw, is a spin-off from the main franchise and sees The Rock play Luke Hobbs while Jason Statham stars as Deckard Shaw.

It also stars Idris Elba, Helen Mirren and The Crown’s Vannessa Kirby.
