Gareeb Log Hai, Sehna Padega, Says Zomato Rider On Row Over Religion

Even as all of social media and the founder of Zomato stood by the rider, Faiyaz, who faced communal hate from a man who cancelled the order because he was Muslim, he said that the incident left him sad and frustrated.

Han hurt to hue hai. Ab kya bolenge sir, ab log jaisa bolenge... sahi hai is par kya kar sakte hai ,gareeb log hai... sahna padega sir (Yes I feel hurt. What can I say sir, whatever people say...its okay what I can do in it... we are poor, we have suffer),” he said.

On Tuesday night Amit Shukla a resident of Jabalpur took to Twitter to complain to Zomato that he was cancelling his order because the person who picked up his order was a “non Hindu”.

However Zomato stood by its ideals and said “Food has no religion”. This was backed up by Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal, who said on Twitter “We are proud of the idea of India - and the diversity of our esteemed customers and partners. We aren’t sorry to lose any business that comes in the way of our values.”

Narrating the sequence of events, Faiyaz said, “I called the person who had placed the order to know the location of his house. But he said he had cancelled the order.

On the other hand, Shukla appeared unrepentant.

“Do my freedom of expression and religion not fall under the idea of India?” he said when a news channel asked him about his reaction to Zomatos reply to his request to change the rider.

“At present, the pious month of Shravan is going on and it is a matter of my personal choice,” Shukla said, justifying his stand.

Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Trailer Is Here With A De-Aged Robert De Niro

The first trailer for Martin Scorsese’s long-gestating historical mob drama “The Irishman” is here, reuniting the director and his on-screen muse Robert De Niro in their ninth collaboration.

The film spanning decades in the lives of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran (De Niro), a World War II veteran-turned hitman, and notorious union boss Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), is based on Charles Brandt’s nonfiction book “I Heard You Paint Houses” and has been a passion project for the director since 2008.

“The Irishman,” described by the studio as an “an epic saga of organized crime in post-war America,” will chronicle the legendary investigation into Hoffa’s disappearance. The real-life Sheeran reportedly confessed to killing Hoffa, which he says he carried out on the orders of the Bufalino crime boss, played by Joe Pesci in the film.

To bring the movie to life, Scorsese used digital de-aging visual effects with the help of Lucasfilm’s Industrial Light & Magic to capture De Niro and Pacino up to 30 years younger, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Distributed by Netflix, which reportedly bought the film for a hefty price, “The Irishman,” is set for a premiere on the opening night of the New York Film Festival in September before landing in theaters and on the streaming service sometime in late 2019.

“People such as Netflix are taking risks. ‘The Irishman’ is a risky film. No one else wanted to fund the pic for five to seven years,” Scorsese said last year, noting the film languished in development hell for years at Paramount. “And of course we’re all getting older. Netflix took the risk.”

“The Irishman” also stars Anna Paquin, Bobby Cannavale, Ray Romano, Sebastian Maniscalco and Harvey Keitel.

Billie Eilish Talks About Self-Harm, Depression And How She's Coped

Billie Eilish talked about the mental health issues she’s dealt with since she was 13 years old, including anxiety, self-harm and depression, in a candid interview with the Rolling Stone.

The 17-year-old pop phenom told the magazine that she suffered from body dysmorphia when she was a competitive dancer, and said that she faced depression that started when she was forced to quit dancing after she ruptured a growth plate in her hip at age 13.

Eilish revealed that she resorted to self-harm amid the emotional turmoil at that age.

“I think that’s when the depression started,” she told Rolling Stone, referencing her injury. “It sent me down a hole. I went through a whole self-harming phase — we don’t have to go into it. But the gist of it was, I felt like I deserved to be in pain.”

Eilish quickly rose to fame, and she’s already dedicated at least part of her career to advocating for mental health awareness.

She hasn’t shied away from talking about her bouts of depression in previous interviews and in May, she appeared in a PSA reminding people to “seize the awkward” and seek the help of a friend or a therapist if they need it.

And in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres in April, Eilish also revealed what it was like to live with Tourette’s syndrome.

Eilish said she doesn’t self-harm any more, noting that she hasn’t “been depressed in a minute,” but at her shows, she’ll sometimes run into girls who have harmed themselves. When she does, she offers those fans a simple but heartfelt piece of advice.

“It breaks my heart,” she told Rolling Stone. “I don’t have scars anymore because it was so long ago. But I’ve said to a couple of them, ‘Just be nice to yourself.’ Because I know. I was there.”

Eilish still struggles with anxiety, though, an issue that emerged when she started touring. In one instance, the singer described a week where she had a panic attack and cried for two hours every night for a week.

She described that week as one “of bursting misery.”

To help her get through those moments, Eilish said she started seeing a therapist again.

Eilish also spends time with horses as a way of relaxing, her mom told the magazine. While growing up, Eilish worked at a stable near their home in exchange for horse riding lessons.

“It’s more for my mental health than, like, a hobby,” Eilish said.

Will Smith Swaps His Face Onto Jada Pinkett Smith’s And It’s Hilarious… And Weird

Will Smith as Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook talk show “Red Table Talk” is a hit. But it seems her famous husband, Will Smith, might feel a little left out of all the fun.

Or at least that’s what one gathers from a very funny video Smith posted on Instagram over the weekend.

In the charmingly goofy post, the 50-year-old Oscar-nominated actor takes a clip from “Red Table Talk” — in which Pinkett Smith and her mom, Adrienne, interview NBC star Stephen Curry’s mom, Sonya — and swaps his face onto his wife’s.

The end result is equal parts hilarious … and slightly unsettling.

Many of Smith’s famous friends seemed to love the video.

Actor Jamie Foxx told Smith “Game over!!!” in the comments of his post, while comedian Kevin Hart simply responded with a series of laughing-crying emojis.

Below is the video from the actual episode of “Red Table Talk.”

It’s also nice to see that Smith has figured out a way to insert himself more into his wife’s talk show, but next time he wants to face swap, how about using one of Pinkett Smith’s movies?

May we suggest this infamous scene from her hit 2017 comedy “Girls Trip.”

Those consuming 201 to 401 units of electricity will continue to get 50 percent power subsidy from the government, he added.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia called it a “historic day for Delhi”.

Unnao Rape Case: Complete Probe Into Car Crash In 1 Week, Supreme Court Tells CBI

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi asked the CBI to complete its investigation into the Unnai Rape Survivor’s car accident within 7 days, PTI reported.

CBI Joint Director Sampat Meena appeared in the court after the bench directed Mehta to ensure the presence of a responsible officer at 12 noon before it to give details on the probe conducted so far in the rape and the subsequent accident case.

The Supreme Court on Thursday made clear it will transfer the rape case involving BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar out of Unnao district in Uttar Pradesh and summoned a “responsible” CBI officer before it by 12 noon to provide details of the probe conducted so far in the sensational matter.

Sengar was on Thursday expelled from the BJP, a days after questions were raised about the Unnao MLA’s suspension.

The top court also refused a plea of Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CBI that the matter be adjourned to 10:30 am on Friday, as the officers probing the Unnao cases were out of Delhi.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected Mehta’s contention, saying the CBI director can gather the information of the cases on telephone and apprise the bench on Thursday.

“We are going to transfer all the cases. We will pass the order to this effect,” said the bench, comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose.

It was taken up as the first item by the top court, which said as both the matters have been transferred to the CBI, it would pass orders in the case later in the day after knowing the details from a responsible CBI officer.

On Wednesday, the court had taken cognisance of the rape victim’s letter to the CJI and had sought a report from its secretary general on why it had not been brought to his notice since 17 July.

Unnao: BJP Expels Rape Accused MLA Kuldeep Sengar, Cops Appointed For Survivor's Security Suspended

Amid massive outrage across the country over the Sunday’s incident that has put the Unnao rape survivor on life support, the BJP on Thursday expelled MLA Kuldeep Sengar who allegedly raped the woman, then a minor, in 2017.

NDTV reported on Thursday that Sengar had been expelled from the party.

For the latest news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

This comes a day after confusion over Sengar’s suspension from the party. BJP Uttar Pradesh president Swatantra Dev Singh told PTI that the accused MLA had been suspended “a long time ago”. “Sengar was suspended by the party earlier and there is no change in his status,” Singh had said.

Sengar is accused of raping the girl in his home in 2017 when she was taken there on the pretext of getting a job. Sengar had also vehemently denied the charges against him when the case made headlines.

The case of the accident is being probed by the CBI. The Surpeme Court also heard the case on Thursday, and said that the probe into the ‘accident’ had to be finished in a week’s time.

Meanwhile, ANI reports that three police personnel, appointed for the woman’s security had also been suspended.

The family of the survivor had accused her security detail of passing on information to the BJP MLA, who is lodged in prison, of her whereabouts.

The police team, responsible for her security, were not accompanying her when a truck hit the car when she, her lawyer, her mother and two aunts were traveling Rae Bareili.

The incident left the survivor and the lawyer on life support and claimed the lives of the two aunts. The survivor’s family has alleged that this was a conspiracy to kill the survivor and her family.

The family of the survivor had also alleged that when they first filed a complaint against him, the MLA had threatened to kill them.

The survivor is fighting for her life at a hospital in Lucknow and the doctors have said that her condition has mildly improved.

“The rape survivor has sustained multiple fractures. Today there was very slight improvement in her condition, but this cannot be termed as satisfactory. She is still unconscious,” Dr Sandeep Tiwari, the in-charge of the hospital’s trauma centre had said on Wednesday.

'Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3' Review: Above Average Avenging

$

0

Announced at The Game Awards last year, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is an action role-playing game much like the last two in the series and the X-Men Legends games before that. It’s been over 10 years since the last game and unlike past entries which were on a host of devices ranging from the PS2 and PSP all the way to (poorly) remastered variants on the PS4 and Xbox One, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is seemingly a Nintendo Switch exclusive. What’s more is, development duties have shifted from Activision-owned studios such as Raven Software and Vicarious Visions to Koei Tecmo’s Team Ninja.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s art direction has more in common with X-Men Legends than prior Ultimate Alliance titles, ditching the realistic visuals for a cel-shaded look. Although static screenshots may suggest a simpler game that would be more at home on smartphones than a dedicated gaming console, the actual gameplay decimates that assumption, with looking like a comic book being a welcome bonus. This is because there’s a welcome element of strategy to the proceedings.

For the latest news and more, follow HuffPost India on TwitterFacebook, and subscribe to our newsletter.

You’ll assemble a team of four heroes and modify attributes with ISO 8 crystals. With only four characters in play at any given time from the roster of 30-plus to choose from, you’ll tweak your party for the best stat boosts. For example: a team with Venom, Spider-Man, Spider-Gwen, and Miles Morales increases resilience (resistance to damage from energy and ethereal attacks) thanks to the Web Warriors bonus. On occasion you’ll run into ISO 8 crystals, these let you customise your party further such as adding a permanent bonus to strength or increasing the effectiveness of special abilities.

What’s more is, as your party ventures forth and gains experience and cash with each battle, you can use them to give all your heroes, even those not in battle, enhanced health, attack power, and more. Throw in ability upgrades like adding stagger damage to Spider-Man’s webshots and you’ll soon realise that paying attention to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s menus is as important as avoiding fatal blows from the likes of Ultron. Managing these details is rewarding and adds interesting wrinkles to the gameplay particularly if you want the best combination for your style of play.

At the same time, while pouring over the minutiae is bound to keep number crunchers enthralled, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 doesn’t penalise those looking to put together their own fantasy team. Want to take the fight to Thanos with Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Hawkeye, and the little known Elsa Bloodstone? Go right ahead. It might not be the most effective squad but you won’t be punished for following your dreams.

And speaking of Thanos, much like the recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, you’ll be up against the mad titan and his cronies, the Black Order. The game begins with the Guardians of the Galaxy discovering all six Infinity stones aboard a kree ship and soon enough, they’re dispatched to all corners of the galaxy.

Before you know it, Nick Fury and Shield are involved in addition to the Avengers. It’s not the most original set up, but it ends up being entertaining in part thanks to the breakneck pacing that pits you against the biggest and baddest of the Marvel Universe from classic villains such Mysterio and Dr. Octopus to the likes of Proxima Midnight and Doramamu before you take on Thanos himself.

All along the way you’ll be treated to responsive controls, over the top special effects, and a serviceable frame rate at least when you’re playing in docked mode. That’s not to say Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 isn’t playable in handheld mode, far from that. However the cramped Joy-Con layout makes it less enjoyable than it should be. More so when combat is in real time and dependent on quick button inputs.

Regardless of your tolerance for less than accommodating Joy-Con ergonomics, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s camera is far from ideal and its easy to lose focus of the hero you’re controlling as it either zooms out too much or fails to track it altogether. Reseting the camera is as simple as tapping the right analogue stick and you’ll be doing that more often than you’d like.

Nonetheless, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3’s moment to moment combat is good enough to overlook these niggles. From basic attacks to ridiculous special moves, it’s an absolute joy to play. Pummelling rank and file henchmen and bosses is a treat. The latter more so due to the presence of a stagger gauge. Deplete it and for a brief period they won’t counter-attack, allowing you to land devastating attacks. It’s an interesting mechanic that makes these encounters just a bit more thoughtful than your usual action RPG fare.

All in all, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch library. The fresh additions in terms of gameplay make it a welcome step up from past entries. It’s not perfect, but does enough to warrant a playthrough even if you have a passing interest in all things Marvel.

SCORE (OUT OF 10): 7.5

SUMMARY: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is a welcome addition to the Nintendo Switch library despite its imperfections.

This Is What Rohit Sharma Tweeted After Virat Kohli Dismissed Reports Of Rift

NEW DELHI — “I don’t just walk out for my team. I walk out for my country,” tweeted Rohit Sharma on Wednesday after India captain Virat Kohli rubbished reports of rift between him and the star opener.

Ahead of the Indian team’s departure to the United States on Monday, Kohli categorically refuted rumours of a rift with his deputy Rohit saying “people feeding off lies” are being disrespectful to the players’ personal lives.

Coach Ravi Shastri too had rubbished the reports of differences between the two star players.

“In my opinion, it’s baffling. It’s absolutely ridiculous to read these kind of stuff, that comes out there. I have been to public events where we have been praised and here we are feeding off lies, overlooking facts, turning a blind eye to all good things that happened and creating fantasies and scenarios in our head. We want to accept that this is the truth,” Kohli had said.

After India’s ouster from the World Cup, stories of fissures in the Indian camp emerged with claims that Rohit and Kohli are not seeing eye to eye.

Idris Elba recently shared some details about the night he first met his now-wife model Sabrina Dhowre Elba – and apparently, there were fireworks from the start.

The “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” actor revealed during Tuesday’s segment of “The View” that it was “love at first sight” when he met Dhowre Elba at a party venue in Vancouver. He was filming his 2017 movie “Mountain Between Us” with co-star Kate Winslet at the time.

“I went out on my only day off, true story, it was a Sunday night... went to this party, and there she was,” Elba said. He later continued, “I went to a party called Slow Jam Sunday... and there she was. The rest is history.”

Elba and Dhowre Elba wed in a stunning ceremony in Marrakesh, Morocco, in April. The actor told British Vogue the morning of their wedding that he and Dhowre Elba, a former Miss Vancouver, were “inseparable” after they met.

Elba, who has two children from previous relationships, Isan and Winston, was named People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive last year.

During Tuesday’s segment of “The View,” co-host Sunny Hostin joked that “so many people were in mourning” when it was announced Elba had tied the knot.

“I myself wore a veil,” Hostin joked.

Elba noted that while he has publicly said in the past that he wouldn’t get married again, meeting Dhowre Elba “opened” him up.

“I’m actually the happiest I’ve been in a long time,” he added.

Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav, who is on death row in Pakistan, will be granted consular access by Friday, Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Mohammad Faisal said on Thursday, reported PTI.

“Pakistan is awaiting Indian response after it formally informed the Indian High Commission,” Faisal said at the weekly media briefing, reported PTI.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said India has received the proposal from Pakistan and is evaluating it in light of the ICJ judgment.

Jadhav, 49, a retired Indian Navy officer, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of “espionage and terrorism” in April 2017 following which India had moved the International Court of Justice (ICJ), seeking a stay on his death sentence and further remedies.

Pakistan’s move comes two weeks after the ICJ ordered Islamabad to undertake an “effective review and reconsideration” of the conviction and sentence of Jadhav and also to grant consular access to India without further delay.

These Two Grooms Got Married In A Strikingly Beautiful Hindu Wedding

When two grooms tied the knot in a traditional Hindu ceremony earlier this month, they didn’t anticipate that their wedding photos would go viral.

The couple, Aditya Madiraju and Amit Shah, first got married in a small ceremony at New York City Hall in 2018, but later decided they wanted to throw a proper Indian celebration that could include more of their family and friends. They chose this summer because it coincided with a visit to the U.S. that Madiraju’s parents, who live in India, had already planned.

On July 18, the couple hosted a mehndi party in their backyard, followed by a traditional ceremony at a Hindu temple in New Jersey the next day. On July 20, they capped off the weekend with a sangeet-style reception at Pondicheri cafe in New York City.

The couple held a traditional Hindu wedding ceremony at a temple in New Jersey.

“In the midst of planning, we didn’t realize that having a same-sex wedding at a temple would be groundbreaking,” Madiraju told HuffPost. “We were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do it. And now looking back, especially after the attention our wedding has received, it’s evident that what we were able to do will change the scope for LGBTQ couples in the future.”

While homosexuality isn’t explicitly condemned in the Hindu religion, some Hindu temples or communities may be “unwelcoming of LGBTQ people, often reflecting attitudes imported from conquering nations, such as the British Empire in India,” according to the Human Rights Campaign

The couple’s wedding photographer, Charmi Patel Peña, said the Hindu community “still has a lot of growing to do when it comes to gay marriage.”

“So it’s been really, really amazing for us to see how the [couples has] been embraced by the temple and the community which allowed them to marry there,” she added.

The grooms before they performed the Hindu wedding custom of the four

The fashion-forward grooms, who met through a mutual friend in 2016, donned several coordinating ensembles throughout the weekend.

For their low-key mehndi event, they wore linen kurtas by Bohame

For the religious ceremony, they sported floral Anita Dongre kurtas.

And for the sangeet-style reception, photographed by Paulo Salud, the grooms donned looks by Andaz Design — Shah’s own costume and wedding attire company.

Madiraju called the response to their wedding photos “overwhelming.” People from all around the world have reached out to share their own stories and offer their congratulations to the couple.

“We have been getting messages on social media from people around the globe who have come out to their families, people who have regained a sense of hope, and even those who have changed their mind about LGBTQ couples and will now support them,” he said. “The response has given a whole new meaning to our marriage, and we are excited about the social changes this will help make.”

People Love This Old Video Of Queen Elizabeth Sprinting After A Young Prince William

The internet is thoroughly enjoying adorable footage of Queen Elizabeth running after a pint-sized Prince William in the 1980s.

Last week, a Twitter account resurfaced a clip of the goofy moment, which occurred at the royal wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson on July 23, 1986.

“Late post, but it’s been 33 years since the wedding of Prince Andrew and Fergie in 1986,” the Twitter user, who goes by @katemidletons, wrote. “And so here’s Queen Elizabeth running after little Prince William to stop him from getting closer to the carriage. Her Majesty as a grandma is cute.”

People clearly loved the clip and said they could see Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis all doing the same thing:

Luckily, the queen saved William from an unfortunate accident and the rest of the wedding day went off without a hitch.

Though Andrew and Fergie later divorced, one of their daughters, Princess Eugenie, recently posted about her parents’ wedding anniversary on her Instagram account.

“Who else has ever forgotten to congratulate their parents on their wedding anniversary!” the royal wrote. “I’m a day late but I wanted to celebrate my parents getting married 33 years ago... Thank you for always being the best of friends and bringing us up together.”

'Game Of Thrones' Script Finally Reveals Why Drogon Melted The Iron Throne

$

The real reason why Drogon the dragon destroyed the Iron Throne in the last ever episode of “Game of Thrones” has finally been revealed.

And contrary to what some people suggested after its broadcast earlier this year, it wasn’t some form of a symbolic response to Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

It was actually a mistake.

The script for the episode ― titled “The Iron Throne” ― was shared on the Emmy Awards website earlier this week after HBO’s epic fantasy drama garnered a record 32 nominations for the 2019 ceremony.

Setting the fiery scene, it read:

We look over Jon’s shoulder as the fire sweeps toward the throne ― not the target of Drogon’s wrath, just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration. We look through the blades of the throne as the flames engulf it, and blast the wall behind it. We see the throne in the flames, turning red, then white, then beginning to lose its form. We get tight shots of the details melting in silhouette: the armrests, the iconic fan of swords on the backrest. The fire stops. The smoke clears revealing a puddle of smouldering slag where the throne once stood. Who will sit on the Iron Throne? No one.

So, the throne was “just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration” ― and not the true target of Drogon’s wrath.

Case solved, although the revelation may not appease those fans who have lobbied for the final season to be rewritten via a viral Change.org petition that has secured more than 1.7 million signatures.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys on Wednesday put the calls for a season do-over to bed once and for all, however.

The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show but it wasn’t something we seriously considered,” he said during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour in Beverly Hills, California. “I can’t imagine another network would.”

WhatsApp Groups Reveal The Hate Against Muslims In Delhi’s Residential Colonies

NEW DELHI — “Is your name Sandeep? Tell me your real name,” shouts a man off camera, as he films his conversation with another man, who appears to be a street hawker.

The hawker nervously tries to pass himself off as “Sandeep,” before admitting his name is Faheem.

“All you Muslims are selling these kinds of things,” his interrogator said. “Money is getting stolen in villages. You are making Hindu children sick by selling adulterated food.”

Anti-Muslim content like this three-minute video is frequently shared in the Whatsapp group of the Residential Welfare society of a Delhi colony, a Supreme Court lawyer who resides in the colony told HuffPost India.

Five years after Narendra Modi first swept to power, and months after his re-election in a polarising general election, anti-Muslim rhetoric has been normalised to point that it is freely shared in Whatsapp groups meant to coordinate the activities of Resident Welfare Association (RWA), in professional groups set up by work colleagues, and in family groups.

Election related content — like jokes, videos, and memes directed at politicians — have stopped since the 2019 Lok Sabha election concluded in May, but communally charged, anti-Muslim propaganda continues.

“This is an organised attempt,” said Pratik Sinha, the founder of fact-checking website Alt News.“The communal misinformation has become more aggressive now. There is a continuous churn.”

While May 2019 kept Alt News’s fact-checking team busy with election related news, six of the seven viral fake news stories Alt News fact-checked in June targeted Muslims.

A recent Reuters study on news habits in India found that 52% of their respondents received their news from Whatsapp, and 34% of news consumers trusted news from social media (compared to 36% of news consumers who expressed faith in the media).

Sinha said political parties were using this “lack of digital literacy” — where people do not distinguish between real and fake news — to create false and divisive narratives.

The decentralised and private nature of these Whatsapp groups makes it hard to pin down exactly who is pumping this venom of communal hate through the veins of the Indian polity.

In April this year, HuffPost India reported on a secretive BJP-financed company devoted to producing propaganda that could not easily be traced back to the ruling party.

The communal misinformation has become more aggressive now. There is a continuous churn.

A BJP voter

The Supreme Court lawyer who allowed HuffPost India to peek through his Whatsapp groups, has lived in this residential society for the past ten years.

As more people started using Whatsapp, he recalled, residents created these groups to coordinate society events, and pass on useful information.

The anti-Muslim propaganda, he said, started after 2014. One message, which was doing the rounds in 2015, invited people to join a training program as a volunteer of the BJP’s campaign through Whatsapp.

“The message said that your progress would depend upon how active you would be with the campaign of BJP in social media,” he recalled. “I strongly believe that such people are the result of that drive.”

“Such people,” the lawyer said, are the few people in the group who repeatedly post hateful anti-Muslim messages.

The Supreme Court lawyer says that he votes for the BJP because his family is loyal to the party. He liked former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for his “vision,” infrastructure development, building highways, interlinking rivers, and his efforts to resolve the complex issue of Kashmir.

“I have always been a liberal person and I rate myself as secular. I liked Vajpayee for his vision but always had an inclination towards socialism adopted by Congress. However, I always believe that their understanding of secularism is flawed,” he said.

This BJP voter is not a fan of how the Hindu nationalist party’s present brand of politics. He believes, however, that it is Congress’s failure to separate religion from politics that is responsible for BJP’s success.

“I hate Modi because I feel that for immediate gain he has divided the country on religion. BJP was a Hindutva party but now it has turned itself into anti-Muslim party and is propagating something which intends to make our thinking regressive,” he said.

I hate Modi because I feel that for immediate gain he has divided the country on religion.

No one objects

Worryingly, no one objects to the hateful messages targeting Muslims.

One reason is that his residential society does not have a single Muslim family.

The second reason, the lawyer said, is that no one wants to get into a messy debate or argument with the people who post these messages.

“I decided to remain in such groups as it’s easier to raise some issues relating to society, and also to be updated with society’s activities,” he said. “But such messages keep coming and no one ever resists or objects.”

In April this year, HuffPost Indiareported on the messages shared in the Whatsapp groups of a Meerut-based businessman and BJP supporter, which were mostly targeting Muslims, and Congress Party leaders, especially Rahul Gandhi. Earlier this week, he too said that while election-related content had stopped, the communally-charged messages are still coming.

One recent message said, “While casting his vote, he becomes Muslim. While taking benefits, a minority. In a bomb blast, an innocent.”

Such messages keep coming and no one ever resists or objects.

Messages in July

On the one hand, the Modi-led BJP government says it is rolling out a major outreach program for the employment, education and empowerment of minorities, and in banning triple talaq, claims to have corrected a “historical wrong done to Muslim women.”  On the other, the public discourse under its stewardship casts Muslims and Islam as a threat.

The messages in the Whatsapp group of the Delhi-based residential society denigrate and demonise Muslims in many contexts.

A message, which was posted shortly after the video of the man harassing the Muslim hawker, was an anecdote in which a teacher asks students to name the world’s most famous monument of love.

After one student named the Taj Mahal in Agra, another one objects and picks the Ram Setu bridge, a bridge between India and Sri Lanka, which many Hindus believe was constructed by Hindu god Ram in his campaign to rescue his wife from Ravan.

“Ram did not cut off the hands of the monkeys that helped him construct the bridge. He lovingly took them back to Ayodhya. What Shah Jahan did was not love. It was cruelty and madness,” the student said, dissing the 16th century Mughal emperor who had the Taj Mahal constructed for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Historians have found no evidence to back the gruesome tale of Shah Jahan severing the hands of the artisans and craftsmen who built the Taj Mahal.

Another message, a very long one, rails against former vice president Hamid Ansari, who, in 2017, said that Indian Muslims were feeling uneasy and scared.

Another message says, “Challenge any Muslim in Hindustan to give the names of five generations. The fifth generation will be Hindu.”

Another message is a tale about how a snake, who used to live in a mosque, and was chased away by Muslim, and ultimately found a safe haven wrapped around a Shivling in a temple. “This is the difference between Islam and sanatan…”

Another message refers to a recent the Hindu-Muslim flare up over parking a scooter in Lal Kuan in Chawri Bazaar, located in Old Delhi, last month. It says, “Lal Kuan was the right step taken by Hindus.”

Change is possible

The Indian government has seized on the rapid proliferation of hate speech and fake news, ironically spread by representatives of the ruling BJP, to push Whatsapp to give law enforcement agencies access to the platform

This has prompted fears that any fixes are simply going to increase censorship at a time when civil liberties are already under threat.

But change is possible when people object.

When someone tried posting similar messages in Whatsapp group of Supreme Court lawyers, people objected, this lawyer said.

“That person had to stop,” he said.
