NEW DELHI—On Thursday, the Purana Quila in Delhi will come alive with the ‘Light The Way’ event, where crowds will gather to listen to musician Raghu Dixit.
The same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach New York to participate in the UN General Assembly with other world leaders to sign the new Global Goals that look to tackle poverty, inequality and climate change in the next 15 years.
You would think these are two unrelated events. Apparently, it's not.
The event in Delhi is being organised by action 2015, Save the Children and United Nations to cheer the Prime Minister when he is at the UN.
Save The Children, in fact, wants the voice of India’s people to travel all the way to New York and therefore, they will light up the screens outside the UN headquarters with world leaders as audience.
Dixit is very excited about participating in the event.
“PM’s visit to UNGA is a momentous occasion for every Indian. The commitment he makes there, will impact each one of us for generations to come. It is a privilege to be part of an event that sends the message directly to our leader, that the country supports him and is depending upon him to ensure a better future for the people and the planet,” he said.
So, why is 'Save The Children' an NGO that works for child protection and education rights in India cheering for Modi?
Dr. Sudeep Singh Gadok, Director of Programmes, Save the Children, India said that the "unprecedented evening of citizen action in New Delhi will deliver a powerful message to leaders, calling on them to not waste this opportunity to end extreme poverty, fight inequality, and tackle climate change.”
“One-third of the world’s poor live in India. The Global Goals are a once-in-a generation opportunity to transforms the lives of millions of those living in poverty, including women and children," he added.
It's not just the Delhi folks who will cheer for the Prime Minister. People in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan will also host their events to 'light the way' for the Prime Minister.
Bihar will show their support by lighting candles, Uttar Pradesh will see a performance by an all-girls band and Rajasthan will host a laser light show--demanding robust sustainable goals.
The event at Purana Quila will begin at 7 p.m. with entry open for all.
