Ever wished there was an app that could tell you the likelihood of a waitlisted train ticket getting confirmed? It’s often the most challenging part of booking an IRCTC ticket, where a bad call can ruin travel plans. Thankfully, there’s an app for that.

Trainman, a year-old service, now has apps on all major smartphone platforms. It’s turned into a valuable companion app for IRCTC users. The app advises you on travel-related decisions by presenting the percentage odds of a wait-listed ticket getting confirmed, by comparing it against a database of historical IRCTC waiting lists.

Trainman tracks the initial and final status of a waitlisted ticket, the number of days between the two, and the date of journey. Trainman also lets you ascertain the likelihood of waitlisted tickets getting confirmed by entering your PNR number.

“The latest feature we’ve added, which is only available on the app is the ‘Running Status’ option. We haven’t put that on the website, since it’s more relevant to phone users, as it lets them track a train in real-time.” said Mohammad Amir, creator of the service in a phone interview with Huff Post India.

The probability of a ticket being booked is presented using a colour-coded percentage — tickets with odds above 65 per cent are highlighted in green, which implies a high chance of the ticket getting confirmed. Tickets with sub-optimal odds are highlighted in yellow (50-65) and red (below 50 per cent odds). Trainman has been tested with over 5 million PNR numbers, and claims an average accuracy of around 83-90 percent.
