Clashes Break Out In Kashmir On Eid; 1 Civilian Dead As Police Say It Was From A Grenade Blast

Eid Al-Fitr in Kashmir on Saturday was marked by clashes between protesters and security forces in Anantnag. A youth was reportedly killed, but police say that he died in a hand grenade explosion.

Greater Kashmir reported that youngsters took to the streets of Anantnag town after prayers at the Eidgah Hanfia and the Ahli Hadees.

The protesters allegedly pelted stones at security forces deployed in the area and the forces fired tear gas and pellets at the protesters.

It was reported that "anti-India" slogans were allegedly raised.

The report in Greater Kashmir said that one of those injured in the clashes, Sheeraz Ahmad, of Brakpora, died in hospital while 12 people were injured. It also reported that two youth were hit by pellets in their eyes.

The police reported that the injured were taken to hospital.

However, police said that Ahmad died of a hand grenade blast. They said in a statement:

"As reported by certain sections of media that one person died in clashes with security forces at Anantnag is refuted .

Preliminary investigation reveals that a Hand Grenade exploded resulting in the death of one Sheraz Ahmad S/O Gh Mohiuddin R/O Brakpora due to splinter injuries and his right hand got fully damaged .Further details are being ascertained."

Kashmir has been tense after journalist Shujaat Bukhari was gunned down on Thursday evening.

Apart from Anantnag, there were reports of clashes from other parts of Kashmir as well.

News18 reported that there were clashes in Sopore and Kupwara and stone pelting in Shopian. It was also reported that crowds protested against the death of nine-year-old boy in Pulwama as well.

A ceasefire had been declared in Kashmir by the Central government for the holy month of Ramzan, so that citizens could enjoy a peaceful month. However, whether the ceasefire will be extended will be decided on Sunday.
